Stunning Steve: E24 - Hollywood & Vine: May '94
Episode 24 - Special Series - Stunning Steve

Transcript
How stupid are you guys? All you people out there in TV land, you just make me sick. We told the world what we were gonna do and we went out and did it. The wrestler who will dominate the sport like no other wrestler can. WCW has tried way too long to try to hold me back. The whole facade, who cares? No one cares.
Speaker B:Welcome to the Bottom Line Wrestling cast the career of Stone Cold Steve Austin. We are back with another episode of our special series covering Stunning Steve. And it's episode 24. Hollywood and vine recovering May of 1994. I'm Mike Prue along with JV as always. JV, how you doing?
Speaker C:Good. How about you, bro?
Speaker B:Not bad, not bad. We're in the middle of the summer here. Time's just flying by, you know. Six weeks through already. That means we're halfway through the summer. Four weeks left. Four. Four and a half weeks, I guess. But actually, no, because tomorrow is Monday. So, yeah, four weeks. So, yeah, time's flying by and it's been hot, it's been muggy, it's been. Yeah, it's all over the place. But hey, it's fun to not have to work. Oh, yeah. So that's a good thing. And I haven't been out golfing as much as I want, so I gotta go out again with you soon. Yeah, this week. Let me know. Yeah, yeah. Other than that, you know, everything's good. Everything's been going well. And we're back with some more Stunning Steve. It's been about a month or a month or so. A little bit more than a month. We'll do these monthly episodes now. And here we are to cover May. We last left off in April. We had Austin going through a bunch of foreign wrestlers. Yeah. A bunch of fake foreign wrestlers. Yeah. Like Pat Tanaka and Brady Boone under a mask. And who the hell was the other one? It was. What was his name.
Speaker C:For all forgettable.
Speaker B:I know they're all forgettable. The Mongolian Mauler, I think, was involved in that too. Yeah. Well, it was all leading up to a match against a real Foreigner, which was the Great Muda. And he took on the Great Muda at Spring Stampede. And then where we left off, we had Dusty Rhodes talking about Meg May Mayhem. And there's going to be a dream match. And the match is going to be between Johnny B. Bad and Stunning Steve Austin. So that's where we left off. They didn't announce what the match was going to be because there's all different stipulations. So that's what we'll begin with is Dusty Rhodes revealing what the match will be. And then get into that May Mayhem match. And also, it's going to be a Johnny B. Bad month, basically.
Speaker C:So, yeah, I noticed that.
Speaker B:Yeah. Which is funny because in the beginning of covering Stone Cold Steve Austin, it was a bunch of mock merrow matches.
Speaker C:Yeah, full circle. Well, reverse full circle.
Speaker B:Yeah, yeah, the opposite. Now, this is the prequel. All right, so before we get into all that though, just please give us a follow on X at bottomline Cast, Follow me, Mike Pro at MPRU 83, all JV at John Van Damage. And also please give 5 star rating wherever you listen to your podcast. Wherever you listen to this podcast. All right, so with that said, we're gonna get right into the action here. It's May 1994, and I'll start off with some results before I get into that May Mayhem. All right, so the first thing we have here is a dark match. It's WCW Saturday night taping from May 2, 1994. And you had Stunning Steve defeat Brian Armstrong, Road dog. And then in wcw, he had a house show in Sarasota, Florida at the Roebuck center or Arena, May 5, 1994. There is no result. Just know that a match happened stinging Cinco de Mayo. Yeah, Cinco de Mayo. Stinging Steamboat took on Rick Rude and Steve Austin. Jv, are you using your volume thing?
Speaker C:Yeah.
Speaker B:Okay, I don't know if it's gonna make a noise, but whatever.
Speaker C:Yeah, they can deal with it.
Speaker B:All right, so WCW, we're at Nassau Bahamas, Queen Elizabeth Sports Center, May 7, 1994. Again, no result. Something Steve took on Ricky Steamboat. You can only speculate that Steve Austin's probably losing all these matches and they're non title matches anyway. Now let's get to WWII worldwide from May 7, 1994 in Orlando, Florida at Disney MGM Studios. This was taped in February 1994. And we're going to start off first with an audio clip. Dusty Rhodes making May Mayhem match between Johnny B. Bad and Stunning Steve Austin. So take a listen to this and we'll be right back on the next Hard Copy.
Speaker D:Next World Championship Wrestling Worldwide from the Disney MGM Studios. And this week it's May Mayhem month. It continues this week on worldwide including our Slamboree 94 control center. This week's dream match between Johnny B. Fan and Stunning Steve. Let's go to Dusty Rhod.
Speaker A:Oh, yeah, we back and it's exciting. May Mayhem dream matches we talking about. Last week we had talked about the bad man himself. The prettiest man in wcw drawn out of that hat. And we had talked about the one and only coming up here on this big screen right here, the stunning one United States heavyweight champion, Steve Austin. Now, Stephen. Oh, yeah. And the Colonel. We gonna draw now, Johnny. We gonna see what the dream match is this week. Will it be. Will it be the boxing match or will it be that dreaded tuxedo match? You know, Johnny, I heard that. Tuxedo match, if that's what it is, boxing, when you knock him out, tuxedo match. We looking at having to rip a tuxedo off of that. Let's take. Let's take a look down and see what we got. Get in there.
Speaker B:Come on.
Speaker A:Let me get in here. We dig it here. See what we got, Johnny. But she don't match. Now I'm going to take this run on the bottom. All right, here we go. Oh, Johnny. Oh, Johnny, it's a tuxedo, man. Yeah, I'm sorry, brother. That's okay.
Speaker D:I'll tell you something.
Speaker A:I want to make this dream a nightmare. Cause I'm still gonna kick y' all through. That we're not too dad shot. You know what? Let's go to the recap.
Speaker D:All right.
Speaker B:All right, so Dusty Rhodes opens this show of worldwide standing with Johnny Bu. Standing before that big screen that they have Johnny Bags wearing boxing gloves. Because that's one of the matches that could be. It could be a boxing glove or boxing match. Boxing glove match. A boxing match. Or it could be a tuxedo match, which I get it with Johnny Be Bad. He's a golden. Golden Golden Gloves boxer. Right. Amateur. And that. That makes sense. All right, then he would want that match. But then they try to like hype up, like stunning. Steve is like the master of the tuxedo match. Like, what the hell is that? He's just like a pro and taking guys tuxedos off. Yeah. Just weird.
Speaker C:And that should never. I don't know. That's the stupidest match.
Speaker B:Yeah. Possible. That's a match where it should be like two managers against each other or something. Like not a wrestler wearing.
Speaker C:Or two women's wrestlers.
Speaker B:Yeah, maybe. Yeah, right. Guys stripping each other's clothes off. Yeah. Especially at this time. And these matches go back to like the 80s too. So I don't know what they were thinking. All right, so anyway, Dusty has his little fishy bowl, as he says, and he's. He's like, all right, we're gonna pick this match. So that's all. They're just gonna pick it from a fishy bowl. So you have the boxing match, so you have the tuxedo match. Austin is shown on the screen. He's wearing his tuxedo. He stands with Colonel Parker. Johnny B. Bad, like I said, has his boxing gloves. He's all ready to go for that. Dusty reveals that it's going to be tuxedo match. Then Austin and Parker are all excited and giggling and laughing. And Johnny, he looks pissed at first, but then he's fine with it. It's okay. Stunning Steve. I'm going to make this dream a nightmare. I'm going to kick your booty with my tootie, Fry. So lame. Kick your booty. My too.
Speaker C:Johnny Bad sucks.
Speaker B:What's funny though is like Dusty Rhodes came up with this gimmick for Mark Mero because he thought he looked like Little Richard. Right? Yeah, we all know that he does look like him. He does, right? So it makes sense. But you can tell, like even this line had to have come straight from Dusty Rhodes.
Speaker C:Yeah, I'm gonna kick you if Dusty says it.
Speaker B:Well, no, Johnny Bat says it, so.
Speaker C:I know, but I'm saying like it's a line. Dusty. Oh, yeah, that would have sounded good from him, but not right from anybody else. Sounds better.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker C:Yeah.
Speaker B:So Johnny wants the match to start now. And they cut right to it. Yeah, they cut right to the opening match. Tuxedo match. Actually, no, they cut to them. They cut to the opening match, but Johnny wants it right now. He's like, oh, I want it right now. And they cut to the opening match. They're like, no, screw you, it's later. It's the main event. It's not right now. So it'll be later in the show, but we're gonna skip all that other on Worldwide and get right to the main event. The main event happens at 42 minutes and 20 seconds on the version that we checked out, which is probably not available to you guys, but you might actually be able to find it on YouTube. A lot of WorldWides out there. So it goes 42 to 54 minutes. So it's about 12 minutes long. It's a non title match, so it's not for the U.S. championship. It's just a, you know, stipulation match. Stunning Steve vs. Johnny bat. And we go down to the ring with Gary Michael. Competitor announces the objective of the match is to strip your opponent's tuxedo off. So Johnny B. Bad heads out first look at shop, win his tucks. Johnny dances with someone's mother. The mother is like totally into it. She's loving it. Bobby Heenan calls her ugly. Very nice. Back when you could do that. They would never say something like that about a person in the crowd today. Oh, look at that ugly person. But I love.
Speaker C:Yeah, probably not.
Speaker B:No. You think McAfee might?
Speaker C:Yeah, absolutely. Yeah, that's exactly who I thought of.
Speaker B:Yeah. He probably could get away with it. I don't know if he has. Yeah, Yeah.
Speaker C:I think the Hill announcer can always get away with it.
Speaker B:Yeah, Jerry Lowell did it a lot, too.
Speaker C:Yeah.
Speaker B:But I don't remember hearing it anytime recently, though. You know, it's always like Graves did. Yeah. Accord Graves. Yeah.
Speaker C:Adam Graves. That's a hockey player, right? Corey Graves.
Speaker B:Yeah. He seems like he might have said something like that. Snuck it in, especially now that Vince isn't there. Maybe they're doing that a little bit more. All right, so anyway, Johnny heads to the rink. He gets the crowd pumped up. He shoots off a load of his bad blaster, which is a thing in itself. It's just like shooting all over the crowd. And he puts it right where his penis is. So it's like, you know what he's doing. He's thrusting, and he pops it. Oh, the bad blaster. So Austin and Parker head to the ring next. He's in his tuck still. He's got his U.S. championship, which is not on the line during this May Mayhem dream match. But, you know, before the action starts on the version we watched, there's a commercial break. So I figured, hey, let me just write down some of the ads that were happening here at this time. And you had an ad for Super Metroid, for the Super Nintendo, that for Payday Candy bar. And then an ad for Time Life's book, book series, that you could get the art of woodworking, which one volume is like cabinet making and boring.
Speaker C:Now you can. She's gonna read about how to build something. The instructions are better than ikea.
Speaker B:All right, now back from the commercial break. The match begins. Austin quickly rips the pocket off Johnny's suit coat. He even says it looks like two major Ds fighting over a table. Pretty funny. Moments later, Johnny rips a piece off of Austin's coat. So they're going thick for that. Bad knocks Austin to the mat. Austin fights back and backs Bad into the corner. And it's a few shoulder blocks. Austin Bad have a back and forth, which leads to Johnny giving Austin a back body drop. Johnny's shirt's ripped open. Now, at this point. Then Johnny ribs Austin's shirt apart. He busts all the buttons. It's like Homoerotic Johnny pulls Austin's coat over his head and gets in a couple of shots and proceeds to pull off Austin's shirt and jacket. Austin rolls out of the ring to get away from Johnny.
Speaker C:Fifty Shades of Gray.
Speaker B:Austin is trying to call timeout. Colonel Parker then runs over to Austin and starts fanning him with his handkerchief. Then the crowd starts chanting, Johnny, Johnny. And Bobby Heenan says that this match looks like a bad wedding. So he's pulling out all the. The jokes based on tuxedos that he probably wrote down before the match. Randy Anderson is counting Austin out. The referee, Randy Anderson, is counting Austin out, which I didn't think was part of the match. The match is supposed to end when someone's stripped of their tuxedo, not when there's.
Speaker C:Yeah, right.
Speaker B:So why is there gonna be a count out? Just another example of, you know, WCW being wcw. He didn't ask Shivani what would happen if one of the wrestlers forgot to put tights under their tux. Tony says that they would probably immediately cut to a crowd shot if that happened. Matter of fact, Tony is. Yeah, the cameraman would just cut. We would edit it. So anyway, Austin's working on Johnny B. Bad's leg on the ring apron. Austin gets Johnny's coat off and then hits an elbow drop from the second rope. Austin sets Johnny up on the second rope. The ref backs Austin away from the ropes, which allows for Colonel Parker to start choking Johnny on that second rope again. There's no dq, so why is the ref trying to enforce this again? Get the shit together. You know the. You know the rules of the match. You're supposed to know the rules of the match.
Speaker C:Clearly doesn't know the rules.
Speaker B:Right. The ref doesn't know, and it's confusing.
Speaker C:The hell out of the audience. We thought we knew the rules of the match.
Speaker B:Yeah. These referees, you know, a lot of them good, like, Randy Anderson's a good referee. But so many times when there's stipulations, they just continue, like, through the normal flow of what they do in matches. They don't, like, alter what they do. Like, oh, that's cheating. Let me stop him. Oh, you're outside. Let me count. Like. No, you have to adjust. You have to not do those things. You could basically just sit in the corner where nobody's wrestling and stand there. You don't have to do. Just watch. And then once the clothes are off, pay attention to the clothes. And that's the only thing they have to do is just watch them. Watch until their clothes are Gone. And then ring call for the bell and we'll see in the ending of this match that you can't even do that. All right, so anyway, Austin gets Johnny's shirt off. Johnny pant. Johnny's pants are now looking like MC Hammer pants because they're all like, they're ripped and they're just like flowing. So they're ripped in the inner part of the thigh. And so at this point it's. They're tied at this point in the match because they got the same missing.
Speaker C:Both missing the same amount of clothes.
Speaker B:Yeah, right. Austin gets a sleeper hold on Johnny. Johnny wiggles out of it and whips Austin to the ropes. Then locks a sleeper hold of his own on Austin. Austin frees himself of the hold with the jawbreaker in the center of the ring, which kind of looks like stunner, but that's what he's usually used to break out of sleeper holds. Tony mentions that this is a good fight, but they will be having a big match for the championship in a few weeks at Slamboree in Philadelphia. So we're seeing the match between them, you know, three weeks before now. Obviously this is a lot different than a regular match. Don't tell a referee that because he doesn't know. But it's supposed to be a different type of match. Johnny connects with great, working like way.
Speaker C:Harder than he needs.
Speaker B:Right. Like I said, he could just be laid back in the corner.
Speaker C:Really just a spectator. You're a fan.
Speaker B:Johnny connects with the great head scissor take down to Austin and then a back body drop. Johnny goes for Austin's pants from the bottom, which you think taking your pants off from the bottom.
Speaker C:Can't even.
Speaker B:Imagine it. Yeah, that's what Johnny's trying to do. He's just trying to rip the pants off from the bottom. Obviously not going to work. Austin misses a leg drop on the second rope. Moments later, Johnny. Johnny then rips a piece of Austin's pants off. And I'm wondering what the hell did they make these clothes out of that they're just all ripping apart. Like I get it. Like you're supposed to think that these are like very strong guys and they just rip these clothing. These had to be like fake clothing.
Speaker C:Yeah, yeah, like the. Or pre teared, you know what I mean? Yeah, like certain like seams have like, you know, they got like head start so they're easier to peel, right?
Speaker B:Yeah. They were probably made by some seamstress that they have in the back or something. Right. Austin tosses Johnny to the Map from the second row. Moments later, Johnny does the same to Austin. The ref turns to check out Austin in the middle of the ring again. You don't need to check other than is his clothes gone? Colonel Parker sneaks up behind Johnny, who is in the corner of the ring where the ref should be. Parker rips the remainder of the Johnny's pants. So Parker rips Johnny's pants off while the referee's not looking that the person he's supposed to be. He even screams. He pants them. He pants them. I loved it. Bounty tries to hit Pocket. The referee now sees bad injustice. Trunks. The referee calls for the bell and declares Stunning Steve the winner of the match. Bobby's yelling, can you believe it? He ripped him off. I mean, he really ripped him off. So Colonel Parker and Stunning Steve get away with another one because. Because of poor officiating. And hey, you can't blame Colonel Parker for doing what he does. The referee is incompetent. He's taking advantage of the situation. If the referee was just doing what he's supposed to, Colonel Parker would never be able to rip the pants off.
Speaker C:Yeah, the referee sucked the whole time.
Speaker B:Yep.
Speaker C:He made his job more difficult and like up what should have been a really easy job.
Speaker B:Right. I mean, obviously we're saying this all ingested whatnot. You know, the point of it was, you know, you want to get heat on Parker and Austin from the crowd, but I don't think they gave a. So, you know, and the last thing you want is you don't want the referee getting the heat. And that's. That's what's happening here.
Speaker C:That's what happened here. You failed, right? You did bad.
Speaker B:That sucked. All right, so it's still funny nonetheless to just check out, you know. But yeah, that's a thing. A tuxedo match. But yeah, they'll be having a bigger match that we'll be checking out later on at Slainboree. And from there now, on the same night, May 7, 1994, as you know, WCW, they have to have like three shows on a day on the weekend. Yep, you have WCW Saturday Night and jv. You're going to take it away for us. So what do you got?
Speaker C:Yeah, so we got WCW Saturday Night, Atlanta, Georgia, Center Stage. This was taped on 420 Blaze It 1994 and aired on 5-7-94. So we start off our coverage here with an interview with Lil Richie, Johnny B. Bad with Mean Gene Oakland, so Mean Jeans, mentioning how superstars are ready to head north to Philly for the Upcoming Pay Per View Slamboree. It's a pay per view, right? It's not like a free for tea.
Speaker B:Yeah, Pay per view.
Speaker C:Yep, it's a pay per view. So all the Superstars are getting ready to head north to Philadelphia for slamboree. Johnny B. Bad is with me and Gene and Johnny says he has his plane tick ready and he's ready to head to the city of Brotherly Love to face Stone Cold Steve Austin for the United States Heavyweight title. I always like it's the US Title now, but I do always like how like it was the US Heavyweight title.
Speaker B:Yeah, yeah.
Speaker C:But it's not that now. It's just the United States title, right?
Speaker B:I think it's called the Heavyweight they do in wwe. Oh, wwe. No, I think it's just the United States Championship.
Speaker C:In wcw, it's still the heavyweight title, Right. Johnny Bag goes on to say that the gold is gonna look really good. Real, actually. Sorry, real pretty. Because he loves the word pretty around his waist. Mean Jin says he'll be announcing this at this match as being official during his Control center report later today. So John Bat kind of jumps the gun there and you know, because I'm assuming that at the time, obviously we didn't know this was a thing yet. So Johnny Bad kind of announces it and Mean Gene mentions he's going to make it official later during his Control center report, Mean Gene then asks Johnny Bad how he feels about Austin's constant companion and manager, the very annoying Colonel Robert Parker, who is a source of distraction for everyone. That stunning Steve Austin gets in a feud with Johnny B. Bad says Parker is too worried about walking around with his briefcase and too concerned about the World Heavyweight Title. And he needs to stop worrying about the US Heavyweight title because there's a bad man in WCW and he's the one that's gonna take it away. There's actually a pretty good Johnny B. Bad pomo. The one I'm gonna cover a little bit later kind of sucks. I think it's him later that. Yeah, it sucks.
Speaker B:Yeah. This one's not bad. This one's not fine. Yeah.
Speaker C:All right. So then we get to a match and kind of sticking with the theme here since, you know, we started the show, we have another non title match, which suck hate non title match. If you're a champion and you're fighting, your championship should always be on the line, in my opinion.
Speaker B:Right. And if. I mean just get through Champion. Right. It's all scripted, so just get the result you want. Just make people think it's for the title.
Speaker C:Come on, like you can't write right? You know what I'm saying? Anyhow, so it's stunning Steve Austin not defending his U.S. championship against Dustin Rhodes. So the Natural is out first. They also cut to like a hot blonde in the crowd. You couldn't not see her. Yeah, because the camera just kind of stays on her for like a solid few seconds and she's kind of like doing the Wave. And Bobby the Brain Heenan actually points it out and she's actually pretty hot. She's like modern day hot.
Speaker B:Wow. Yeah. I gotta go back and look because I forget.
Speaker C:So stunning Steve Austin is out next with the greatest promoter on the face of the earth. Bobby the Brain kind of points him out as that as being Colonel Parker, obviously. So we cut to commercial and then we come back and we have Tony and the Brain on commentary for the rest of this match. Stunning Steve Austin takes control with a headlock which then transitions into a side lock. Crowd is hot for Dustin Rhodes. You know, as always, he's always kind of, you know, in good standing with the fans here. He gets the first few roll ups, which is actually like cool little chain of events. So Dustin chains together a roll up, then into a double leg takedown pin attempt and then another roll up. And those are all for two counts. So nice little chain of pin trading there. Well, not paint pin trading, but kind of pin rolling, I guess you could say, from Justin Rhodes to stunning Steve.
Speaker B:Yeah, it's nice to see the quick action like that.
Speaker C:Yeah, the tempo is really kind of starting off solid here. So stunning Steve does his heel thing, retreats to the outside and he's calling timeout, you know, with his hands and he's regrouping. And then he kind of runs into the ring hoping to kind of catch Dustin coming back into the ring, but it doesn't work. Dustin takes control again. Immediately again. There's obviously going to be great chemistry between these two. We've covered what feels like a not really a dozen, but maybe a dozen matches between these two since us, you know, between our stunning Steve and Hollywood Blondes coverage and all that.
Speaker B:Yeah, matches, yeah. Gotta be close so you can see.
Speaker C:They just have great chemistry. Almost like they enjoy working together. And Tony Schiavone, you know, being a great announcer that he is, he kind of points that out as well. Austin then takes control finally with the head scissors. The Brain then has a kind of great line on commentary, which, you know, we could probably do a whole show on just comments he makes. But he says it's like meeting a girl who drinks beer. This is great. In regards to the match that we're watching here, the Brain has another great line. He asked Tony, you know why they call him the Natural? He says, I checked. I went to his school. He was a total failure. And I kept asking his other teachers and they said he was a natural at failing. Of course he is. He's Dusty's boy. So meanwhile, Rhodes is still in control. Not much going on in this match at this point, really just a lot of match work. I'm sorry, mat work here. After the hot start, we do get back to the outside and Austin lands a great flying neon. Dustin from the ring apron. Austin kind of loads up, gets a running start, you know, jumps, you know, off the ring apron onto Rhodes, who's on the mat with a great flying knee. Back in the ring on the top rope, we got Dustin Rhodes and stunning Steve. So Dustin Rhodes is kind of like on the top, the middle turnbuckle. And Austin's kind of facing the crowd from, you know, the same position. They start trading blows, you know, trading lefts and rights. Dustin kind of pushes Austin off, gets the upper hand, and then attempts a flying elbow. But Austin does a great job, just kind of punching him in the gut with a gut check. Austin then kind of transitions immediately into a sunset flip for a two count, which was actually like a pretty cool sequence of events there. Rhodes is able to kind of kick out Austin then. I'm sorry, Dustin then gains control. He kind of tosses Austin into the rope. So we know what he's setting Austin up for. He's kind of trying to set Austin up here for the bulldog, toss him into the ropes once. Austin kind of counters it. So he kind of tosses, you know, kind of Dustin grabs him back, tosses him back to catch him off the ropes and this time nails the bulldog on Austin. And it was a great bulldog. Parker then distracts the referee, of course, while Dustin has the pin. He probably has a 20 count at this point. Meanwhile, while the ref is distracted, Bunkhouse Buck interferes, comes in the ring, smashes Dustin on the back with his bull rung. Austin then sneaks in the pin for the win. And all hell kind of breaks loose here. Bunkhouse enters the ring again and him and Austin are double teaming Dustin Rose. Just beating the ever living shit out of him on the mat. Now they're trying to tie him up in the ropes, seemingly to kind of rob the brains. Yelling on commentary, screaming like, brand them. They got a brand. Like Bunkhouse has A brand with him. So they go to time up in the ropes. But of course the hero of the episode, Johnny B. Bad, comes in for the save. And Austin and Bunkhouse Buck retreat like the cowards that they are. So pretty good match. I enjoyed it.
Speaker B:Yeah, you can't go wrong with Dustin versus Austin.
Speaker C:There was just like a three minute lull in the middle of the match where they were just on the mat and it was kind of boring.
Speaker B:Oh yeah, I remember that.
Speaker C:I don't understand why. I fucking hate that. Because there's no purpose. There's not like, I don't know, I wonder from like a production because I've noticed that a lot with these WCW matches, there's always like these breaks in the middle where they're just like holding each other for three, four minutes. And there's no, like, I don't see it from production perspective.
Speaker B:Like why you would think they would have that part edited out and go to commercial, you know, that come back.
Speaker C:Like that's the stuff we see when we're at a show and there's a commercial on.
Speaker B:Right.
Speaker C:You know, I mean, but at least, you know, at the show. All right, must be commercial time.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker C:So anyhow, good match there and we know we got more to come between Johnny B. Bad and Austin. And I'm sure you know, we're not going to cover it, but obviously Bunkhouse Buck is. It's a great way to kind of set up his. His continuing feud with Dustin Rhodes here. So after that we have a post match interview. We have Mean Gene. He's gonna be with Johnny B. Bad and Dustin Rhodes. So he's with them both. Johnny tells the whole world that he's sick and tired of Parker interfering in matches. And in Philadelphia, he's gonna show Austin the new United States heavyweight champion in Johnny B. Bad, which was terrible. If you go back and listen to this, he fucking fumbles all of his words. The line. It doesn't make sense. He says, I watched it three times to make sure I wasn't up. He actually says in Philadelphia he's gonna. I'm gonna show Austin the new United States heavyweight champion in Johnny B.
Speaker B:Bad.
Speaker C:That just sounds trash.
Speaker B:Yeah, it's terrible.
Speaker C:So I feel like he up when you kind of. If you watch it, you can see his mannerisms. You kind of tell he knows he up. Like he forgot what he was supposed to say and he's winging it. So Mean Gene then asked Dustin about Buckhouse Bunk. Dustin Rhodes does a great job selling how exhausted he is from you Know the beating. He calls Buck a coward. And then all he does is jump him every time. Dustin says, at slamboree, everyone witnessed what happened at Stampede. But this time, he and Bunkhouse Buck will be tied together with the cowbell. And at this point, Dustin Rhodes kind of stops making sense. He's like, either he's a great actor, he's really fucking exhausted.
Speaker B:I think it's probably a little both.
Speaker C:Yeah, he might be concussed. Because even he's like, yeah, I'm a little stunned and dazed. And then he just kind of ends it by saying he's not going to get away from me at slamboree. It was very awkward.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker C:Minute and a half interview for a minute and a half. I watched this thing for, like seven minutes, just trying to make sense of it.
Speaker B:Sounds like. Is this.
Speaker C:I was just, like, fascinated with how bad of a segment it was.
Speaker B:Yeah, they were just probably super exhausted. Johnny be bad. You know, he's not. He's not good enough to talk right after a match.
Speaker C:No, he wasn't even in the match. He just came in for the same. Yeah, right, dude, you had 20 minutes to remember your lines. What the. You knew this was gonna happen. Did one job, save Dustin Rhodes and nail your promo after the match. And it was 30 seconds. You couldn't remember 30 seconds. It was a minute and a half total.
Speaker B:That's bad. Yeah, Literally bad.
Speaker C:Trying to be bad at promos.
Speaker B:Be bad. All right, so from there, we got some more house show results. Move on to May 9, 1994, Fort Lauderdale at the War Memorial Auditorium. And we do have actual match results, not just what the matches were at. Sting and Ricky Steamboat defeat U. S. Champion. Stunning Steve Austin teaming up with Paul Orof, who was a sub for Rick Root. And then Salisbury, Maryland, May 19th. So 10 days later, Dustin Rhodes teamed up with Brian Pillman and defeated Steve Austin and Bunkhouse Buck. Surprised there weren't any, like, Dustin and Johnny B Bad versus Austin and Buck matches leading up. Yeah, pretty sure there weren't, were there? I don't.
Speaker C:I don't see any here.
Speaker B:Oh, yeah, there was. Where? I covered it. I forgot all about it. All right, it's coming up. It's coming up soon anyway. Yeah, that makes sense. All right, so I. I was right with my booking. So anyway, Dustin and Pillman beat stunning Steve and bunkhouse buck on two shows, May 19th and the 20th. One, like I said, in Salisbury, Maryland. The other in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. All right, that'll bring us now to Saturday night where they will have that match. So the previous Saturday night that JV just covered led to the tag team match that take place here on Saturday Night from May 21, 1994 at Center Stage. And this was taped on April 21, so the next day it was taped. So they did back back days tape in there. And the first thing we'll get to is a promo, or actually it's promos from the Control Center Slamboree Control Center. So take a listen to that. Just about a minute and a half or so. So take a listen and we'll be right back.
Speaker A:Tomorrow night we get an opportunity to straighten it out. Is it Johnny B. Bad Johnny B Head or Johnny B. Said, huh? It's gonna be Johnny B. Said, Colonel Johnny, Let me tell you something, kid. You've come farther than any wrestler in the country this past year. The improvements, incredible. Johnny B. Bad. Look for it. The Hollywood Vine. There's nothing like making a man submit. And that's just what you'll do at slamboree to Bounty. May 22nd slamboree. Johnny B Band taking on Stunning Steve Austin for the United States heavyweight title. Oh, I tell you, I've waited a long time for you, Stunning Steve. And for a belt to go around my waist. What better city than the city of brotherly love? Well, there's no love lost when I get in the ring with you and kick your booty with my tutti frutti.
Speaker B:May 22.
Speaker A:It's a good day to be a bad man.
Speaker D:Tomorrow night, live from Philadelphia, Johnny Fe Bad challenges United States heavyweight champ Stunning Steve Austin at Slamber Experience. This WCW Mega event exclusively of pay per view. Call your cable company right now. And fans, your Saturday night continues after this.
Speaker B:All right, so with Mean Jean in the Slamberry Control Center, Mean Jean runs down the card and spotlights the US Championship match between Austin and Johnny B. Bad. Mean Jean first cuts the footage of the tuxedo match that had happened a couple weeks ago that I covered earlier on Worldwide. And then he cuts to a promo from Austin and Colonel Parker. Parker kicks it off and says that tomorrow night it will straighten out. Johnny be bad. Will Johnny be bad, Johnny be had or will Johnny be sad? Colonel Baka says, so stupid. Austin says it's gonna be Johnny be sad. Let me tell you something, kid. You come further than any other wrestler in the country this past year. The improvements, incredible. Look for it. The Hollywood and Vine. There's nothing like making a man submit. And that's just what you'll do at Slamboree. There was Austin. There Johnny's gonna be sad. Next we get a rebuttal promo from Johnny B. Bad. Johnny says that he's waiting a long time for this title shot against Stunning Steve. And he mentions that there's no better city to have this match in. The city of Brotherly Love. And he's going to kick his butt with his tutti frutti. And May 22 is a good day to be a bad man. And my thought was, now that is like a copy and paste promo. All he had to do, the only thing he had to change was the date, because he could use that against anybody. And Brotherly Love, he had to. Whatever city and whatever the date was, that's all he had to change. Every other word. You could just go with every time. All right, now let's get to the main event. Happens at the end of the show. It's a matte last match. Stunning Steve and Bunk House Buck versus Johnny Be Bad and Dustin Rhodes. Colonel Parker, the greatest promoter on the face of this earth, lead Stunning Steve and Bunkhouse Buck down to the ring. Tony Schiavone mentions that Parker and Buck cost Dustin Rhodes the match against Stunning Steve a couple weeks ago. That JV had just covered Bobby hidden Goose on Buck's hair. He says, oh, he looks like Eddie Munster. That's funny. That Johnny Dependent. I mean, Bobby Heenan's making fun of another heel, Bunkhouse Buck. They look like Eddie Munster on a previous episode. He made fun of a kid with a ball haircut and said, nice haircut. If you're a fan of Mo Howard. I think that was on one of your episodes. He may have snuck that in. Johnny V. Bad and Dustin Rhodes head to the rink, and they clear the ring. Dustin has a bull rope with them because he has a bull rope match coming up against Bunkhouse Buck at Slamboree the next night. Johnny shoots off his bad blaster, which this time has money in it. I was. I was thinking, though, like, upon the explosion of that blaster, when did some of those bills just get ripped up? Like the confetti? Yeah, like shooting off money, but it's just getting ripped.
Speaker C:It's getting shredded.
Speaker B:Anyway, that. That happens there. So they just get everyone down to the ring and then as they have, which totally like what JB was just saying about production. Like, they. They keep the. They keep the wrestles in the match and air that, but they immediately cut the commercials once people get to the ring instead of just starting the match. The wrong placement for their. For their ads. So anyway, I figured, hey, what kind of Commercials were going on here. So when they went to commercial break, you had a Castro GTX commercial. You had Flair Ultra 1994 baseball cards. And then they were also hyping the NASCAR Cola 300, which would be happening later that month as it always does in late May, Memorial Day usually. Vanessa soon had a commercial Wagner Power Roller. And then Burger King promoted their Mega Double cheeseburger for $1.99. And then Wrigley Spearmint. And it was a funny quote from the Wrigley commercial. Says, when I can't smoke, I enjoy pure chewing satisfaction. The commercial was based around like, oh, you can't smoke in this restaurant. Then okay, I'll just pop in this gum. When I can't smoke, I enjoy pure chewing satisfaction. Then he had a Hot Pockets commercial, Remington. And then finally back to the action. Tony Hype Slamboree. You know, great booking to have this match the night before Slamboree, which I was saying before when I forgot this match even happened because, because I, I did my notes a while ago. So. So anyway, it makes sense, you know, spotlight the two big matches, these two, you know, mid card matches that they have and just put them in a tag team. And they actually got it right. They got it set up for the night before the pay per view. You know, knowing wcw, sometimes they would probably have this match airing a week after the pay per view. Yeah, they would have to, they would have to change the whole commentary around. Anyway. Austin and Dustin start the match. Austin's trunks now say US champ instead of stunning Steve. Tony mentioned that there is a new mystery member of the stud stable that will take on Ric Flair at Slamberry. So he has a mystery opponent. This has been going on ongoing for a couple of weeks with Flair. Colonel Parker. Parker wants revenge on Flair for winning his money then punching him. So there's a little side angle going on with Colonel Parker with, with Ric Flair. And we don't have much action early on in this match between Austin and Dustin. They're just feeling each other out at this point, trying to gain an advantage. They go back and forth with takedowns and arm wringers. Austin is in control, tags in Johnny. Johnny continues the same arm ringing. Chinlock holds. Then the crowd stops chanting. KFC. KFC. So very slow for nearly 10 minutes from the point of the intros to this point. So very slow to start. Just killing time to get to the end of the show. Austin finally is able to get Johnny to his corner. Tags in Bunkhouse Buck. You think Buck would get some offense on On Johnny. Well, he immediately gets a burst of energy and punches Austin as he's leaving the ring and then knocks down Buck. So Johnny just. Buck gets tagged in and Johnny just him up. Buck gets no offense in. Then Johnny puts Buck in a rest hold in the middle of the rink. Come on. Shivani covers for it. Make some sense of it though. He says Johnny be bad, does what he should do, take the Brawler off his feet and keep him on the mat. So Tony Schiavone knows this is. But he's like trying to make it sound better, like, ah, he's gonna keep the Brawler down. That's why he's got a rest hold on. He's not just not knowing what he's doing. Johnny is in control, of course, because he has him in a freaking wrestle. He has book Buck's foot in one hand, then tags in Dustin with the other. So he's stretching him from the middle of the ring. He tags on Dustin, Dustin goes right at Buck with a punch to the head. Dustin then pushes Buck into the corner, gives him a serious kick in the gut. Kicks in the gut. And then he hops up onto the second rope, does his classic corner punch spot with the fans counting along. But he only goes to three. That's one, two, three. That's it. And he stops Dustin, then snapped mare's Buck out of the corner to the center of the ring. Hits the ropes, drops an elbow. Finally getting some action here in the match. Dustin goes for a quick cover. Buck is out on two and immediately gets over to Austin, tags him in. Austin and Dustin lock up as Tony talks about how Ric Flair has warned Colonel Parker. Bobby Heenan goes on to a rant about Parker not being scared of Flair at all and that the people can call him Kentucky Fried, they can call him Extra Crispy. Then Tony has a funny line and says, hey, y' all talking? Not me, man. Bobby's like saying all these insults about Parker, saying like, you know, the fans could say that. Tony's like, ah, man, you're saying it, not me. Tony doesn't want to get hit by Parker or anything anyway. Action continues and Dustin is landing an elbow in Austin's forehead. Then tags Austin's contender at slambery, Johnny B. Bad, into the ring. Austin is able to get the upper hand, backs Johnny into the corner. Shoulder blocks in the corner, then a whip and a reverse to the opposite corner. Austin flies out of the corner, takes Johnny down with a hell of a clothesline. He says, good golly Miss Molly, you know, which is a Little Richard lyric. Austin drives the knee into Johnny's throat and then grinds into it. Austin grabs Johnny to his corner and tags in Buck. Buck has control of Johnny, beats him on the multiple corners of the ring, just going from corner to corner. Then he quickly tags Austin back in. And Austin didn't look ready to get back in the ring at this point because it was literally like 10 seconds. So Austin finally thought he was getting a break. And then Buck tags him right back in. You can tell when Austin gets tagged that he's like, what the. Anyway, Austin gets in snapmaze Johnny to the middle of the ring and locks on arrest hold. Johnny fights out of the sleeper hold as Dustin is now pumping up the crowd on the ring apron for the comeback. We get a brief back and forth between Johnny and Austin which leads to Johnny nail and Austin with his own move, the stun gun. So Johnny hits Austin with the stun gun and then you have Tony Giovanni say he got the stun gun on the master of the stun gun. So it seems though both men are now down in the middle of the ring. Both partners are on the apron. They're looking for the tag. Dustin is able to make the tag to Buck. Johnny rolls, tags Dustin. So Dustin hops over the top rope and then nails Buck with a punch to the face. And they're going at it. Dustin is on fire. A series of punches to Buck, elbow to Austin to back him off, and then a standing drop kick to Bunkhouse Buck. Holy. Dustin is like on fire. He looks great. We got a double noggin knocker from Austin. Yeah, man, he is calling the natural. So we got a double noggin knocker from Austin to Dustin, from Dustin to Austin and Buck. Love that double nagging Naka. Dustin then knocks Austin out of the ring. Parker's on the ring apron now, of course, it's. It's Parker time. Dustin gives a bionic elbow to get his ass off the ring apron. Dustin goes after Buck, nails him with the bulldog, goes for the COVID But then Colonel Parker just runs in, breaks the count, and it causes a DQ finish. And I'm like, oh, man, this was like starting to be a good match. It's like, why couldn't Dustin just win the match? What's the big deal? It's a tag team match. You know, I guess, you know, you want to leave it like up in the air like, nobody won this match. It was a dq. So tomorrow night, tune into the pay per view so you can see who wins the singles matches. I guess that's the point. But come on, Dustin Rhodes could have just pinned Buck and that could have just fueled the, the neck the next night even more, you know, because now the Hill is going to want to cheat even more to get, get the win back. So anyway, all hell breaks loose. Everyone is fighting. Ric Flair even runs in. So we got Flair running in.
Speaker C:God, that's wild.
Speaker B:So this is supposed to be like the mid card matches, but now Flair is getting involved in it too. He has a main event match, well, kind of a main event match. He's defending his title against somebody he doesn't even know who's going to be. Well, I guess it's from the stud stable, so it makes sense, I guess.
Speaker C:But Parker does keep promoting, keep advocating, I guess for Austin to get a title shot. So like I guess it makes sense.
Speaker B:But that's true.
Speaker C:It looks dumb to us now because we know where this heads.
Speaker B:Right? Right. And at this point, I think we said on the last episode it looked like they were going for Austin to get a title shot against Flair and then they changed everything. Yep. Oh yeah, you're right. Yeah, it does look weird now because it's like nothing's ever gonna come to fruition with this shit. So this looks stupid. Yeah, that's definitely the case. And they also now want to introduce and show us the mask guy. So Ric Flair's mystery opponent, the big mask guy, he runs. He runs in to protect Colonel Parker. The dude is wearing a leather jacket and he also has long blonde flowing hair coming out of the back of his mask. So most people can figure it out already. I'm not gonna say it. I'll save it for a little later. But it's obvious when you are watching like who the hell this guy is. And it's doesn't even seem like a big surprise because this guy hasn't been gone too long. Anyway, Flare's down, buck is up. Dustin Austin is beating on Johnny outside the ring. And Tony questions whether or not Flair will be ready for action the next night at Slamboree. Tony, it's fine. It's, it's, it's really April 21st right now. You get a whole month to recover. All right? Flare is surrounded by WCW officials and security. So it's a big thing getting people hyped up. You gotta tune in tomorrow to the pay per view to see what's gonna happen and see if Flare is all right. And who is this masked guy? Who's this masked man? All right, now we got a post match interview and we got the audio for that, it's about a minute and a half. So take a listen to that and we'll be right back.
Speaker D:All right, thank you very much. Tony Schiavone. Colonel Robert Parker, Bunkhouse Buck. Hey, I want that other man at mass. I want that masked man in here. Because I've got a feeling. Colonel, tomorrow night at Slavery, that's the man that's going to be facing Ric Flair.
Speaker A:What you do? I'll tell you what you do. You tune in tomorrow, Slim Reed. And you're gonna see me unveil that man Flair, who was. I just got a little taste of him. Tomorrow, first thing I'm gonna do is just that mask off and present you with your loss of the world championship. I'm gonna tell you something. When I went to Chicago, man, I knocked that Dustin Rhodes out. I went into the Twilight Zone, man. Oh, my life.
Speaker D:I've been wanting to knock somebody out.
Speaker A:Like Dustin Rhodes did all them hard heads on the farm. I'm gonna get to get you one more time, boy. Tomorrow night.
Speaker D:All right, Johnny B.
Speaker A:Man, I'm here to give you credit, son. You're a lot tougher than I thought you were. Last week you're sticking your nose in my business. This week you've got everyone on your side. Johnny B. You can wash my car and mow my lawn. But if you start making threats for the US Title, Then you made it personal. And that's not something you want to do.
Speaker D:All right, I thank you very much, Colonel Park. Who is that man?
Speaker A:I'm going to introduce you to him tomorrow night.
Speaker D:I can't wait. Ladies and gentlemen, Slamberry in Philadelphia tomorrow night. We'll see you on the main event for Tony Schiavone. Bobby the Brain Heenan Garland.
Speaker B:All right, so we get the post match interview. It's Mean Gene with Colonel Parker. Stunning Steve Bunkhouse Buck. Mean Gene is pissed off. He's demanding I. He wants that masked man over here. He wants that mask. Bring him in here. Bring him over here. Bring in the masked man. Park is like, shut up. Like, don't worry about it. He said park is like. Everyone should tune in to slavery tomorrow to see the reveal of the mystery member of the Stud stable. So Colonel Parker is selling it big time. Buy that pay per view, folks, and you'll find out who that is. Buck starts talking. He's talking about going into the Twilight Zone. And wanted to knock someone out like Dustin Rhodes. I couldn't make sense of what he was saying. He made no sense at all. It's Kind of like what you were saying with Johnny B. Bads promo. Buck was making no sense, talking about Twilight Zone.
Speaker C:Yeah, he was like, bunk house Buck.
Speaker B:It's like, boom. They know Dango the Twilight Zone.
Speaker C:I got something.
Speaker B:I'm busting dust and rose in the face off. Anyway, Austin continues to give Johnny Be Bad credit. Austin says, you're a lot tougher than I thought you were. Then tells him, you can wash my car, you can mow my lawn. And then he goes back, he goes off track. He makes a little sense. So these guys are all loopy. He makes a little sense. He's talking about, you're going for the US Title is personal. That's something you want to do. That's not something you want to do. You want to go for the US Title, that's personal to me, and you shouldn't want to do that. It's just all over the place. All right. Mean G knows it's off the rails and he wraps this up quick. He's like, all right, we're out of here. We go. Go. These don't know what they're saying. We gotta move on the slammery. And with that said, we're moving on to slamry. We'll just take a brief little break and you won't even notice it. But we're gonna get set up for slamboree 94. Engage cybernetic generation sequence malfunction. Detective system overload.
Speaker C:Next on WCW Saturday Night.
Speaker B:All right, so it's Slamboree 94, a Legends reunion. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, at the Civic Senate, May 22, 1994. Have a crowd of only 4, 800 people. And I'm sure that place could probably fit a lot more than that. Probably like 1500 or so. 15,000? I mean, they only have less than 5,000 there. It's supposed to be a big show. They're bringing legends back. It's WWE hall of Fame night. And of those 4800 people in attendance, only 3600 of them paid. So you got 1200 people just in there for free, man. That's bad. All right, so our match that we're going to cover, we're going to watch along to this. It's the US Championship match between Stunning Steve and Johnny Be Bad. But before we get to that, watch along, I just want to run down the results of Slamboree 94. The US Championship match is going to be the opening match. So everything I'm going to go over happens after this match. So let me just run down the card and some of the things I noticed as I watched, not a lot of detail, but just a little quick recap. All right, so Rick Rood suffered a career ending back injury in a match against Sting in Japan. So he had to drop the WCW International Heavyweight Championship. So Rick. Rick Rood is done at this point. Wow. He was just around and now he's gone, he's injured, he's out. It's the end of his career, basically. We'll see him later in different roles. But for wrestling, all done. He has to drop that title, the International Heavyweight Championship, after he won that match. So he beat Sting for it, got the title, he made an appearance on TV with it like once, and now he has to drop it. So I figured, you know, with Hogan coming in, they're already hyping Hogan coming in. At this point, I'm thinking that Rude was probably gonna be one of Hogan's first major challenges because Ric Flair is a babyface at this point. So now that Rick Rude is out, that probably led to them saying, oh, Ric Flair needs to be a heel now and we need to have him go up against Hogan first. Now as the big rival. Now that Rick Rude is injured, he doesn't have the title. And then that'll lead to them merging the two titles together. So there'll be no more International Championship. It'll just be WCW Championship Heavyweight Championship. So I never really made that connection before, you know, because, you know, now we're watching it through and seeing it happen. That makes sense that Rick Rude got injured and now they changed Flair to be a bad guy again to take on Hogan. By the way, continuing on in the show, you have Nick Bockwinkle awards Sting the title. But Sting doesn't want the title. He wants to win it in the ring. He doesn't want to just be handed it. So Nick Bach will grant Sting the request to have the vacant title up for grabs in the main event match at Slamboree against Big Van Vader. Upstanding guy, doesn't want to just take the title, he wants to win the title. All right, so you had a few some matches here. You got Terry Funk and Tully Blanchard. Tully Blanchard is one of the legend wrestlers. He hasn't really wrestled much, but he's taking on Terry Funk in this Legends match. And they fight to a double dq. Seven minutes. And the Philly ECW crowd was loving this match. They were hyped for it. They love Terry Funk. Obviously they were hyped and pumped up during that match. Larry Zabisco, another legend coming out of Retirement here defeated Lord Steven Regal. Not that he's been retired long. He's just. He has been wrestling for a few months. Larry's Abisco defeated Lord Steven Regal in 11 minutes in a very slow match. Crowd was happy with Larry winning the non TV title match. Zabisco had not wrestled for a year and a half actually. So yeah, much longer than they previously said. Dustin Rhodes defeated Bunkhouse Buck in a bull road match in 13 minutes. So we get some results on what we've been going over. Dustin Bunkhouse. So Dustin wins that match in 13 minutes. After the match, Terry Funk attacks Dustin Rhodes. Then Funk and Bunkhouse Buck leave Dustin bloody in the middle of the ring. And then Bobby Heenan exclaims at the end, where's Daddy when you need him? Oh, Terry Funk is running amok here in Philly. The ECW crowd, like I said, loves it. Colonel Parker reveals that Ric Flair's mystery opponent, the Mask man is Barry Wyndham. Big surprise. Whippity do. So Barry Wyndham takes on Ric Flair. Michael Buffer announces the ref, but he calls Randy Anderson. Randy Peterson. Randy Peterson, who cares? Ric Flair retained the championship in a solid match. It's only 13 minutes. This would be Windham's. Barry Windham's last WCW appearance until 1998. So he comes back as this masked man and then he's gone immediately. Doesn't come back until 1998 in 99 when he starts the the Rap is Crap gimmick with Kurt Henning. Rap is crap. Barry Window was supposed to actually go to WWE WWF at this point. That's why he was going right away is because he was going to WWF and he was going to be part of the Million Dollar Corporation. At this point in 1994, he was going to team with his former US Express partner Mike Rotunda, who's IRS, obviously, and they were going to be a new version of MONEY Incorporated. Well, Barry Windham's in injured his knee during this match. So that changed all the plans. And WWF didn't want him anymore. And, and they didn't use them. They'll bring him back in like a year and a half. It'll be the Stalker. But they, they meant to have him in the Million Dollar Corporation. And then he got injured in this match, his last match before moving to wwf. So that sucks for him. New New Money Inc. Probably would have sucked ass anyway. I don't know. Who knows how that would have went. All right, so I'm not sure how true that is. I couldn't find anything to really confirm it other than, you know, what I had read from. I forgot what the source was, but I couldn't find any additional sources to corroborate it. So anyway, and IRS has never talked about this from what I know. Anyway, moving on. Cactus Jack and Kevin Sullivan defeat the Nasty Boys in a crazy ass match for the WCW tag titles. The Philadelphia Flyer, Dave Schultz was the referee. And this was called the Broad Street Bully match. You know, perfect match for the Philly audience. The crowd loved it. The Philly crowd chant Sting must die. During the main event championship match. Sting must die. Sting must die. Sting Invader put on a hell of a match. Sting defeats Vader and properly wins the WCW International Championship. After Harley Race tries to drop a headbutt on Sting to break the compass, thing moves, Harley hits Vader Singh then climbs to the top rope, hits a big splash on vader at about 14 minutes to win the match and win the title. Slow start to the pay per view, but the second half was very good. And this is the last pay per view before Hulkamania takes over wcw. Because once we get into June, then you have Hulk Hogan coming in at the Clash of Champions. And then you have the bash at the beach, him taking on Ric Flair. Okay. Also, this is the last WCW pay per view to have the elevated ring entrance ramp. They'll get rid of that and it won't be around again I think until like late WCW, like maybe in 2001. I think they bring it back anyway. Pretty sure it's gonna be used one more time on TV though. So this is the last pay per view with it. But it's gonna be used at June's Clash of Champions. But once Hogan's there, it's gone. It's like Hogan wanted it gone. That doesn't work for me, brother.
Speaker C:Because at right from the get go, he has those rules in his contract. Right?
Speaker B:Right. He has like this creative control shit.
Speaker C:That's crazy that a company would do that. That's like.
Speaker B:Yeah. And he gets the bringing keys to.
Speaker C:Your car to fucking a stranger.
Speaker B:Right. That's when he starts to bring in all people that he knows and he wants. And people like Steve Austin get screwed out of stuff that they were working hard for. Oh yeah. Hogan comes in and changes the company. I mean, company survived. True a little longer. Who knows, Maybe they would have lasted without him, but they weren't making money. Eventually they stopped making money for a little while, but that's more so nwo. Not really because of Hulkamania. Hulk Hogan had to attach Himself to Kevin Nash and Scott hall to become relevant again. And then, even then, he was still the top guy. They made him the number one guy still. So Hogan's like. I don't know. What is that? Like a bloodsucker? Essentially. He's just surviving by hanging on to others. But it worked. He figured out how to become relevant again. Anyway, continue on now to WCW Saturday Night. Actually, no, we got to go to the fucking pay per view first. So those are the pay per view results. Well, yeah, we got the match. We got the opening match. Now, to cover that is stunning. Steve versus Johnny Be Bad. So we're gonna watch this on a. On a version that we got through Richard Land, but it's pretty much the same as what's available on Peacock, just might be slightly different. So the timestamps are pretty close. But it's the first opening match. So we're gonna start with where you see Vladimir the super fan wearing his Sting tank top. And that's about where we are. That's nine minutes, 52 seconds in. So it should be around that part on Peacock as well, if you want to watch along. Hey, jv. You all set up? Ready to go?
Speaker C:Yes, sir. All right, in front of us.
Speaker B:Yeah, I'll give the countdown, as always. Three down to one, then say play. When I say play, we play. Get started. Just want to make sure my volume is all set before I do that. So I don't go, oh, I gotta turn my volume down again. Might as well say that before. All right, Here we go. 3, 2, 1, play.
Speaker C:Actually put it a little louder this time.
Speaker B:What's that?
Speaker C:I had to put my music, the.
Speaker B:Volume a little bit louder, ladies and gentlemen. There we go. All right, so the opening match, and they got Michael Buffer on Elton. I think every match sent this show, so must have paid him for the whole show. So they're going to use them for every match. Eventually it'll just be main events. I'm surprised Michael Buffer even went to all those nitros every week. You know, from place to place for a while. Must have been paying him a ton of money. They thought, oh, that gives us the big match feel. So it's worth the money, I guess. All right. Johnny B's dick dancing in the ring. He's got his bad blaster guys in the front row wearing shirts and ties. Makes no sense. He blast the crowd. It's a good opening match to have, though. Wrestlers Donnie Battle basically get that spot going forward where he's the opening match guy, shoot the crowd with confetti get him all hyped up.
Speaker C:And now, ladies and gentlemen.
Speaker B:Funny, you'll notice once the match starts, but you have the in the front row like always. You have the. The three or four ECW fans that are was in the front row at ecw, they're in the same spots here at wcw. This is weird that they could get the same exact spots.
Speaker A:The former world champion.
Speaker D:Ladies and gentlemen, presenting the defending United.
Speaker A:States Heavyweight Champion, Stunning Steve Austin.
Speaker B:All right, big announcement there. Big introduction. Michael Buffer for Stunning Steve. This is the Howard Stern guy and.
Speaker D:I. I gotta give the faith.
Speaker B:No more guys, he's called.
Speaker D:They are a tough crowd. They love their professional wrestling lane. And of course we got here, many of our crew got here Friday night. Many of us got here yesterday.
Speaker B:Where legends are made. Okay.
Speaker D:We had our slam meet just yesterday.
Speaker B:Okay.
Speaker D:We had of course the reception.
Speaker B:So the referee's not holding up the belt. US Championship belt. Heavyweight wrestling champion. Cool belt. All right, so this hat guy right there in front and his brother waving their finger at Parker.
Speaker C:Black and white striped shirt. It always looked like a prisoner. You see that guy?
Speaker B:An old time prisoner. Yeah, figure that one out.
Speaker D:All right. Sizing up this matchup. Johnny B.
Speaker A:Bad.
Speaker D:You can tell he's very angry.
Speaker B:Straw hat guys is yelling at pocket those mind games.
Speaker E:Well, what I've noticed about Stunning Steven right now, you know someone, it's funny.
Speaker B:To see those guys at WCW because almost like you sold out, you sold out, you're at wcw.
Speaker E:Show is courtesy of the Colonel. The Colonel has him ready. I mean, he didn't stand in the corner during instructions. He didn't take his time. He was taunting Johnny B.
Speaker A:Bad.
Speaker E:That shows you this man is ready. B's got his hands full from the neutral.
Speaker B:So Bob is saying that Johnny B is going to have his hands full with Austin. We start the match with a headlock. Randy Anson is the ref. Doesn't have to worry about tuxedos this time. So can look like a good ref this time. Probably cuz he's going to do all the he's supposed to for a regular match.
Speaker D:Parker standing.
Speaker E:Boy, does that make you mad when someone does that to you, Pat you, slaps you around, gives you a little poke or a pinch. It's you telling them I'm not concerned with you.
Speaker A:I like that.
Speaker E:I like intimidation.
Speaker B:Yeah. Bob pointing out that Austin just being cocky. Having Johnny be bad. All right, kid, see what you got.
Speaker D:Into a front face lock.
Speaker B:All right, Matt Ruslin continues here.
Speaker D:We don't know who the opponent For Ric Flair will be. And we now know Sting Invader will go at it. The winner of the match will be the new WCW International World Champ. And then this place will explode when.
Speaker B:Dave Schultz slow start here at referees.
Speaker D:The Nasty Boys Broad Street Bully match.
Speaker E:Yeah. I want to see what kind of a referee this joker's going to be. I was in more fights than anybody in the NHL. He beat up the General Man.
Speaker B:It's already in the opening match. They're talking about the rest of the show.
Speaker D:Into the Hammer Lock. Johnny B. Bad as stunning Steve tries to get back up and does spins out of that Hammer lockdown with a drop toe hold. And then drives the knee to the side of the head.
Speaker B:Austin Satmir. Hello.
Speaker C:Off the ropes into a sleeper.
Speaker B:And there it is. Same thing Austin did to him in the previous match. Tuxedo match. Austin's on the outside getting fanned off by. Yeah. A call. Marcus Hat.
Speaker E:That's why the Colonel is so important.
Speaker B:ECW fans giving Austin some heat. Yeah.
Speaker E:Come to me. I want to talk to you. Let's regroup.
Speaker B:Always in full participation mode. Those guys.
Speaker E:You've got to do that. You've got to slow Johnny B. Bad down.
Speaker D:Hey Brain. Take a look.
Speaker B:They're part of the show. Yeah. Oh. Sherry Martel.
Speaker D:Martel. Sensuous Sherry is here.
Speaker B:She is just coming in at this point.
Speaker D:She is.
Speaker B:You don't know if she's good or bad yet. But she's starting to scout the wrestlers.
Speaker E:She's stalking, you know, her prey.
Speaker C:Looking for her next.
Speaker E:Remember the old show. The Millionaire will be her next bow.
Speaker D:That's one of the burning questions that.
Speaker B:She had previously just left wwf. It's been a while. I think.
Speaker D:Bad Str.
Speaker B:She had been gone for a little while. Left the 93.
Speaker D:Steve now.
Speaker E:Now if you were scoring this on points, who would be ahead on points right now?
Speaker D:I think it would be stunning Steve.
Speaker E:That's funny because I think it'd be stunning Steve too. The thing is that we agreed on something.
Speaker D:A capacity crowd on hand here at the Civic center in Philadelphia. Good to have you with us. Speaking of legends. We have had some legendary matchers in this great facility.
Speaker B:They going to talk about old matches. This section been some great matches here. I'm like this match.
Speaker D:That's right. It always comes back to that.
Speaker B:All right. A lot of mat wrestling and title.
Speaker D:By defeating Dustin RHS at our last three star.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker C:It's been a staple in like matches.
Speaker B:All their matches. Kind of toughest.
Speaker D:Test is in great shape.
Speaker C:Especially how Good of a worker. Austin is like every. Even with these jobbers.
Speaker B:What are we doing Cleaning those guys up.
Speaker E:And in the mind.
Speaker B:Forget it.
Speaker E:You're not going to win. You're not going to be a champ.
Speaker C:I mean Johnny Bad is very limited at this point for what it's worth.
Speaker B:So true.
Speaker E:You need the butterflies.
Speaker C:Then don't put him in the spot Important.
Speaker E:You just can't go in there over confident. You'll be eaten up. You've got to be a little bit afraid.
Speaker B:Cuz he has the gimmick.
Speaker E:Have any butterflies in your stomach?
Speaker C:He's got that gimmick, baby.
Speaker D:Well the first night you and I worked together.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker C:Piano player.
Speaker E:He's got to see it. What do you expect him to see?
Speaker B:Come on.
Speaker C:I'd rather see him sing that than wrestle at this point.
Speaker B:Immediately. Yeah. They play that song. It's better than this match so far.
Speaker D:In this sport they used to make a man on a break stand back up and back to the ropes.
Speaker B:That was boring. Even more boring. Tony was just saying they used to have him break and go back to their corners and restart.
Speaker E:You look here in WCW the stars are bigger, they're faster.
Speaker B:That's how it was in the 50s and 60s.
Speaker E:And you'll see any place in the world they you've ever.
Speaker B:That's when they were trying to sell it as actual sport.
Speaker D:You go back and we saw the.
Speaker B:Legends who arrive that be so funny if they tried to do that one freaking entertainment.
Speaker D:McDaniel.
Speaker C:Oie Anderson.
Speaker B:How about.
Speaker E:Was that Wahoo McDaniels in the headdress.
Speaker D:Yes.
Speaker E:You know Tony, I thought it was a southbound peacock going north.
Speaker B:Bobby, he's.
Speaker D:He's still here holding on now. Nicely done. Is Johnny Jokes cranking on the arm as they say in this sport.
Speaker E:You see Big Angela Mosca, King Kong, Masa. You know where he's sitting right now?
Speaker B:Where?
Speaker E:Wherever he wants to.
Speaker B:Bobby's so bored. He's talking about the legends that are going to be on the show later.
Speaker D:And he is here.
Speaker B:There's nothing to talk about in the ring.
Speaker D:Going to be talking to many of the legends in attendance.
Speaker B:It's our second two sweaty guys holding each other.
Speaker D:Slamber weekend for all of us. Look at this. Pushing down the chin. He's got the. The armbar ply. Johnny B. Bad keeping his balance. Bridging out.
Speaker E:All he had to do is put his foot over the bottom rope and the ref would have broken.
Speaker B:All right, we're. We're ten minutes into this.
Speaker C:Not much is Happening going on all holes.
Speaker E:Try to impress the champion.
Speaker C:I mean Austin. I feel like trying his best.
Speaker D:That's a form of a victory roll.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker C:To make this work.
Speaker E:But I don't want to be in it.
Speaker D:Into the midsection.
Speaker B:I guess the plan is to have it start slow. But now we're back into a sidelock takedown. Look good. Yes.
Speaker D:Looks darn good here. And he's got Colonel Parker.
Speaker B:Yeah, it looks good but no one wants to see it. He ducks cross body. All right. That's what people want.
Speaker C:I mean Mark Berry is a high flyer.
Speaker B:Right. That's what he should let this guy do.
Speaker C:Get him off the mat.
Speaker B:As he.
Speaker D:Did at the opening.
Speaker E:Look at that Colonel Pace. He looks more worried than Tom.
Speaker C:What else was. Wasn't he something else?
Speaker B:Rock Mero. Yeah. I think it was just.
Speaker C:Wasn't he. He was just Mark Mero and Johnny Be Bad.
Speaker D:Bad.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker E:Do now he should do Johnny B Bad.
Speaker B:And he came into wcw. He's just Johnny Be Bad. And then it was a wild man.
Speaker C:Marvelous Mark.
Speaker B:Marvelous.
Speaker E:He can't make a fist. He can't make a fist.
Speaker C:He can't grab you.
Speaker E:Flying the brain.
Speaker D:That's one of the reasons you're the brain.
Speaker C:He was a cat. Then he was a. Box him with a durag.
Speaker D:But he is being content with just putting the whole.
Speaker B:Yeah. It was marvelous. Mock Mary is basically like a new version of Randy Savage. Table. Table is Ms. Elizabeth.
Speaker D:There's a hair.
Speaker B:Oh. Needed a gun.
Speaker C:Here we go. Pick up the pace here.
Speaker B:Come on.
Speaker C:20 minutes long.
Speaker B:It's a 20 minute match. 12 minutes in. Two counts.
Speaker C:Stuff to talk about here. I don't know. All those weird holes. Face lock. Chin lock.
Speaker B:Yeah. He's doing it again.
Speaker C:Get off.
Speaker B:What the. With these drop toe holds in Austin.
Speaker E:As quick as I could.
Speaker C:You know hearing him this time he's got his knee on his lower back. I almost. I thought I noticed Austin say something to him before.
Speaker E:So that's strategies out the window.
Speaker C:The holds were sloppy. Was like wait on him. Just stand up.
Speaker B:It's not doing anything. Going to make it look like I can't get up.
Speaker E:Take the man out as quick as you can.
Speaker B:Crowdso board the Cheney KFC at Parker.
Speaker D:Ravishing Rick Rud for the international world.
Speaker B:I feel like a wave is about to break out in this crowd. They don't give a. Oh. Double A.
Speaker D:Completely obliterate him with that double ax handle.
Speaker E:John Crook hit like that.
Speaker C:The Philies are being like at least the mat. Wrestling with Dustin Rhodes. They both know what they're doing. Tight, secure knees are on the back when they have a face lock y.
Speaker D:And you hear colonel Parker.
Speaker B:Yeah, this totally different than working with Dustin.
Speaker C:Look at that face.
Speaker B:Pissed. He's like, this match sucks in the corner.
Speaker D:And that foot right in the side of the head.
Speaker E:Look, he kicked him so hard. All the sweat off his body. You can see the footprint where he dried up.
Speaker B:He worked a lot with Mark Mero. Yeah. I don't know if he actually liked it.
Speaker E:See if I can hear what he's.
Speaker D:Saying.
Speaker B:To WWF a king of the ring when he gets kicked in the mouth. Like, man, still up, mar.
Speaker C:Yeah, that's a great vicious.
Speaker D:And I mean a very vicious stunning Steve here at Slamboree 94.
Speaker E:Well, look at the competition, how rapidly it's changing. Constantly. You've got to be vicious. You've got to get this over with. You got to get. You got to get back.
Speaker B:And Austin has Mark Merrill on the second rope. Backs away. Oh, cheating time. Finally. Rainey's concerned with Austin for some reason, which allows Pocket to choke. Yeah, don't be bad.
Speaker D:And what about.
Speaker B:I don't know what, his handkerchief.
Speaker D:He never walked out. Ver g walks out. Where's Terry?
Speaker B:All right, Austin now shot to the side of the chest. Another one. I think he's hitting him in the chest or is he hitting him in the arm?
Speaker D:He doing into the midsection?
Speaker B:Yeah, midsection.
Speaker C:Midsection.
Speaker D:I apologize for him.
Speaker C:I just got the malasada dropped off him.
Speaker B:You did? Yeah.
Speaker C:He's got a good delivery. I'm gonna eat it now, though. Gotta wait.
Speaker B:Getting sugar everywhere.
Speaker C:Yeah, My keyboard.
Speaker B:And Austin grabs the tights and sends mock barrel like Jimmy just said onto the confetti on the other outside. He's going to have confetti stuck all over him.
Speaker D:Bad. Took a pretty spill on the outside.
Speaker B:Then they got to clean that up after the first match.
Speaker C:Isn't that a.
Speaker B:That's stup.
Speaker E:Hazard may not be the guy I want doing my taxes, but he's in great shape.
Speaker C:Here we go. Big suplex coming.
Speaker B:Suplex from the outside to the inside. Nice to lift him. Yeah, he had to lift him and pull him.
Speaker C:Help Johnny jump, right, measures him and.
Speaker D:Drives in the air again. Here's a cover. A very arrogant, Stunny Steve cover.
Speaker E:I believe if he'd have hooked his legs or the trunks covered in fl.
Speaker B:Oh, the trunks. If he would have hooked them all, grabbed his trunks, it would have been over.
Speaker C:Chin lock here. Chin, chinny chin chin.
Speaker B:See, look at how he puts his arm. Yeah, that's real. Like, makes it seem real. Probably as hot as balls in there.
Speaker E:Once what Colonel Parker wants the most.
Speaker B:Here's the Civic Center. But still, who the knows.
Speaker C:It'S 1994.
Speaker D:The reverse chin lock. And he. Look at the added leverage he's getting by clamping the legs around the midsection. Got to be bad.
Speaker B:We're not hostile. No one gives a ECW fans keep trying to get themselves over all the time.
Speaker D:We're not hostile is what.
Speaker B:Oh, Tony's talking about it.
Speaker E:No, they're liars. They just told you they're not hostile. Come in.
Speaker D:Snap air takeover drives a knee in.
Speaker E:And Okra's got to quit doing that.
Speaker D:And a pretty blatant chokehold.
Speaker B:Oh, choke. Yeah.
Speaker E:But you got to kind of fight to break it.
Speaker D:Very surprised the it's been a very good wrestling.
Speaker B:Makes the point. Yeah, you got to counter five to break the choke cold. So we can do five seconds, which makes it legal. Oh, also comes from the second row. Johnny with the knees up.
Speaker E:And it's all over for the Colonel.
Speaker B:Austin's little.
Speaker E:Be careful with Johnny Be Bad. He may be playing possum there.
Speaker B:Darren. Suplex coming. Oh, that reverses it.
Speaker D:Takes him over.
Speaker B:Gets the gun wrench of his own.
Speaker D:Very weary in this opening. Here comes Johnny.
Speaker B:This is an elbow drop. Here comes Johnny there.
Speaker E:I know what the Colonel wants. He wants Stunning Steve to keep him on the mat. He don't want Johnny Bat flying around that ring, but he can't keep him down.
Speaker B:Oh, punch to the gut from Austin. Has Bad in the corner. Chop.
Speaker A:Shake, rattle and roll. His whole rib cage.
Speaker D:Flare. Textbook top of that.
Speaker B:Austin going to whip Bad to the corner there. Oh, Bad runs back out of it and hip tosses him. Austin's like, what the hell? What the hell?
Speaker D:He got a backdrop. Here he goes.
Speaker B:Bad is on fire. He's got the crazy eyes. He's got the bad eyes, the wild eyes.
Speaker D:And now the Irish whip. No S reverses.
Speaker B:Cloth line city cloth line body slam. Johnny Bat is going to go to the top. Austin's up right away. Little shitty drop kick. There you go.
Speaker D:Kick was about three quarters of the way up.
Speaker B:Tony calls it out too. He's like. Ah. That drop kick was three quarters of.
Speaker D:The way up and Colonel Parker's over the top.
Speaker B:Oh, Colonel Parker's distracting the referee. Why he's doing. Wait, just ignore him. Just call all dq. All right. Johnny B's pissed. Goes to punch. Colonel, the bell's ringing.
Speaker C:Oh, Big back.
Speaker B:All right. There was a two count, but they started ringing the bell. Think it was over. It wasn't. Nice spot there. Johnny Be Bad.
Speaker D:He's going for the kiss of dumbness.
Speaker A:He smells the kill right now.
Speaker B:And Johnny Bad came off top ropes with the roll up. I poke prevented the Johnny B. Bad punch.
Speaker D:He's still holding on to the hair.
Speaker B:Kiss that don't miss Steve.
Speaker D:Push up the the rs.
Speaker B:Oh, Austin's reversing it. This is sloppy.
Speaker C:Oh my God, cuz. Johnny Be Bad sucks.
Speaker B:Oh my God. Yeah. Looked like you couldn't even tell that Austin was pinning.
Speaker C:I think he was trying to roll him up. But like as typical what Johnny Bad wasn't doing all match, he wasn't like selling.
Speaker B:Right.
Speaker C:He wasn't working with Austin.
Speaker B:No.
Speaker C:Like you got to help him roll, bro. You're a big guy.
Speaker A:He has hit him.
Speaker B:Yeah, that was just laying flat. Didn't roll. So the pin looked awkward. So nonetheless stunning Steve wins and retains the title. Gets knocked out by Johnny B. Bad with the tutti frutti right after the match as a soul loser. Yeah, what a soul loser has to punch him after. See, that's what sucks. Like the match was slow as gets going. Finally looks like it's going to be decent. And then the ending gets all botched and that crap. What the hell?
Speaker C:Junk.
Speaker B:All right, so Austin retains again, motion anigans. Colonel Parker on the rope, distracts Johnny. But hey, I think Austin won pretty much fair and square after the after that.
Speaker C:Me too.
Speaker B:Johnny just now he goes.
Speaker C:Not a good worker at this point either.
Speaker B:Yeah, that too. All right, so that concludes Slamboree. So there's another pay per view coming. Gone again. Like I said, it's the last one before Hulkamania starts running wild in wcw. And that leads ultimately to the decline of our. Our man here, stunning Steve Austin. Everything will change once Hulk is here. All right, so from there now we move on to the following week. It's May 28th. Av, you got W7 Saturday night. What's going on?
Speaker C:All right, thanks, Pru. So yeah, we're on to WCW Saturday night. Coming out of Slamboree May 28, 1994. We're back at Center Stage in Atlanta, Georgia. And we're gonna start off here with a pre match interview with Colonel Parker. So we have Mean Gene here with Colonel Parker, Mean Jeans giving out the WCW hotline number. And then Colonel Parker shows up for the interview and kind of tells Mean Gene that he shouldn't be telling people that number. And all the other nonsense he was saying beforehand about the content, they can get Parker saying it's a waste of time and money to spend on a phone call for Hulk Hogan. So Colonel Parker said he's the one who breeds champions here. And Parker said he's out to interrupt because he has an introduction for Mean Gene says it's an important individual and it goes back to Philly and Slamboree. Parker said he's not buying himself a set of tights. So he's gonna work. He's going to work on his Mark Twain theory, which is the first man that raises his hand in an argument has run out of ideas, which Parker has not run out of any ideas. He says, this gentleman is gonna hospitalize anyone that puts their hands on me. And his name is Ming.
Speaker B:Nice.
Speaker C:And he'll be my bodyguard. And out walks Mink. He's got, like, one leather glove on, looking like a fucking badass, like he always does. Again, mute. Does not gonna say anything here. Parker says anyone that makes a move on me has to deal with Ming. And I'm putting a final warning out to everyone. Next time someone wants a piece of me, they better put their eyes on Ming. Ming then ask Ming questions. But of course, he ignores those questions. And Parker assures Min Jean that Ming is not here to answer any questions.
Speaker B:All right, I love that he's in here now. That just makes the Stud stable even better.
Speaker C:Yes.
Speaker B:Point.
Speaker C:So now we're going to jump to a match. It's a short match. It's between stunning Steve Austin and Scott Stud.
Speaker B:Scott Student, the jobber portion of the show now. Yeah.
Speaker C:So Scott Stud's out here, and he's. He's got, like, a varsity letterman jacket on, and he kind of looks like an overage saved by the bell bully. But obviously he's a face here. So the match starts. Stud starts it off with the side headlock. Austin is feeling him out in a grapple. And then takes him down with a single leg takedown, followed by, you know, one of his great driving knees to the mat. Austin is focusing on Stud's lower body early here, so a lot of, like, knee and leg work. The camera then pants to Ming ringside. And he's looking on like the badass that he is. Kind of making his presence felt, which I think was smart to kind of bring him out here right away ringside for this match, you know, put him at the forefront of, you know, for fans to see. Austin gets a failed pin attempt here, I guess you could say early. But the whole match is early because it's not long. Followed by another driving knee. And then he controls Stud on the mat with a face lock.
Speaker B:Yeah. So like you were saying before, like, even with Jabba's like, Scott studies doing his face lock.
Speaker C:Yeah. This doesn't make any sense. Like, he should be body slamming back. Like, no power moves. Very, like, methodical, which, I don't know, maybe that's what they want him to be. But the dude, like, that's not a small guy.
Speaker B:That's true. They might be trying to distinguish between how WWF does their enhancement matches where, you know, the stars just crush them.
Speaker C:Yeah.
Speaker B:Then here in wcw, there's wrestling, there's real competition.
Speaker C:Yeah.
Speaker B:That kind of bullshit.
Speaker C:Kind of a failed attempt. And I don't know, they are kind of. They are trying to, like. I mean, they gave him a submission move, a submission finisher, which we're gonna get to shortly here again. So I feel like they're kind of changing Austin's identity a little. So anyhow, Scott Stud finally gets a little offense in. He starts fighting back, kind of working him way up from the face lock with shots to Austin's midsection. So he's kind of hitting Austin on the way up, trying to get Austin to break the hold. He breaks the hole for like a split second or two. It doesn't last long. Austin then starts talking shit to Stud and then, you know, kind of ties him up in the ropes and starts treating him like a puppet, like raising his hand, waving it to the crowd and stuff while he's tied up in the rope, which is pretty comical if you do happen to watch it. Then from there, Austin brings Stud to the middle of the mat, twists him up, finishes them off with the Hollywood and Vine submission hold. Holds it in a little bit longer than he should, but not nothing too crazy. And Austin gets the victory against the Enhancement talent, Scott Stud.
Speaker B:All right, thanks, JV. So that moves on now to May 28, same day, but this is Worldwide, and I'll be covering another jobber match. So this is Orlando, Florida, at Disney MGM Studios. This was taped on May. May 12, 1994. All freebies. 300 people in attendance. Stunning. Steve Austin will be taking on Bobby D. All right, so now Worldwide has a new set. They have a whole new setup at Disney MGM Studios. They have this outdoor area. So that looks pretty cool. I like outdoor wrestling. Just, you know, me too. That I like. Yeah. I always like when WrestleMania has that outdoor feel. So I like this look. I like this feel. And what they have here at MGM and Disney they have, like, I've never been, but, you know, for those of you that have been, you know, they. They probably have. You probably been to these areas where there's, like, a fake city where you're walking through the park. So that's what they have as part of the show, is Austin and his opponents. They're all coming out of this fake hotel, this little city at MGM Studios. And so they walk through the opening of the. You know, they walk out of the entrance to the hotel, and then they make their way across the street and then to the ring. That was a cool, different look, so I thought that was pretty interesting. So anyway, Austin heads out from the hotel. He crosses the street. There's a dude that has. He's getting shooed away. Like, the dude's getting too close to Austin and Parker, and somebody's like, hey, get out of here. So the guy probably had no idea what was going on. Probably just, like, walking up, hey, what's going on here? So, like I said, the look is cool. That's one thing I liked about ww. They're always willing to change and try different presentations, you know, and that. That's what happens when you're second place. Your second place. You're always trying to change so that you can, you know, compete. You know, whoever's in first, they don't usually don't change what they're doing much.
Speaker C:Yeah, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Speaker B:Right? So, you know, like I said, you know, they're running scared. They change it for the sake of change. And this time, it looks pretty cool. So Austin's taking on Bobby D, who looks like you just accidentally walked into a wrestling show.
Speaker C:He looks stud to Bobby D.
Speaker B:Jesse Ventera adds some color for this job of Bobby D. It says that Bobby D is from the Bronx and he's from Jerome Ave. So he's got to be tough.
Speaker C:Damn.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker C:That's only a place.
Speaker B:Yeah, but. But that's Jesse.
Speaker C:Now.
Speaker B:Jesse's like, all right, this guy's nothing. So let me just make something up about him to make him seem a little tougher.
Speaker C:Yeah.
Speaker B:So anyway, in this match, Austin's in control. Jesse mentions that Austin can wrestle, but he can also rough it up. He's what I would call a rugged, scientific wrestler. He can beat you with the hold or he can just plain beat you up. Jesse is, like, so on the spot. We say it every time that he does commentary. He's just so good, you know, that's what we've been missing on like this whole show is Jesse Ventura on commentary. I mean, Bobby's great, but Jesse knows how to get people over, I think better than Bobby because Bobby's always on people.
Speaker C:I agree.
Speaker B:Jesse shits on people a lot too, but at times he can just say certain things that makes it feel more authentic and legit. All right, so while, you know, Austin has Bobby D down. Is that his name? Bobby D? Yeah, Bobby D down. He gets in the camera and declares that both World Champions Ric Flair and Sting are afraid to defend against him. So that's what Austin's concerned about in this match. He doesn't give a shit about Bobby D. He wants the titles from Flair or Sting. Tony slightly mentions that he needs to worry about his own U.S. championship belt and Johnny Be Bad. Jesse tells Tony that the match hasn't been made yet. So stunning. Steve can lip off all he wants to. All right, so we just came off Slamboree. That was the title match. Austin retained it, but now Tony's saying, oh, you got to watch out for Johnny B. Bad still. So he's alluding to the fact that Johnny B. Bad is going to get another title shot, and he will. He'll be getting that title shot at Clash of the Champions in June. But they haven't made that match official yet. Austin locks Bobby D in a Hollywood and vine leg lock out of nowhere. It just freaking happens. It looks so awkward and out of place for his character. You know, like JV was saying in the last match, they're just changing Austin. They're making now like a submission guy, which kind of takes away his whole appeal of being this brawler and badass that he was for the most part in the Hollywood, like Hollywood Blondes because he had Pillman as like the high flyer and Austin was the brawler. Yeah, you know, they were all they're both could do, you know, technical wrestling. But they stood out more as one's a flyer, one's a brawler. And now they're taking that away from Austin and it seems like they're doing it intentionally to make him just not seem as good anymore.
Speaker C:Yeah, they're trying to turn like, public opinion, right?
Speaker B:Yeah, exactly. So whenever the move is locked in, the opponent's shoulders are on the mat every time. So the ref could easily just count to three too on this. One, two, three. Over. Like, doesn't even have to be a submission. Guy's freaking shoulders are down. So the move is basically a roll up that hurts both wrestlers. Hurts to do the move and it hurts the guy. You're doing it to, for whatever reason they're trying to put over the Hollywood and Vine. They probably, you know, just came up with a clever name and they're running with it like, oh, it was a Hollywood and blondes. Oh, Hollywood and Vine, those are the streets in Beverly Hills or whatever. So, yeah, let's, let's name the move after that and have him do that. Hollywood vine sounds like a submission move, so let's do that. Anyway. Shit sucks for Austin. He's so close to the world title picture and now they're just going to unify the world titles so that Hogan can just win the title and be the sole champion and then just have it forever. And, you know, that's what's happening. You know, when Hogan's in. Everyone that was watching at the time knows Hogan's gonna win the title right away. Like, there's no way. Hogan is not a champion.
Speaker C:I mean, he's gonna ask for it.
Speaker B:In his creative, right? He's like, I'm the champion.
Speaker C:Yeah. Oh, all right. First act, I'm champ.
Speaker B:Yeah, right. And then I'm bringing in all the guys I wrestle with. Anyway, so that concludes that, you know, Austin, as we say every episode over the past few episodes in 94, it's just steady decline. Not that he's declining himself, but they're making him decline because they know what's around the bend, they know what's coming, and they know that Austin is not going to be a top guy for them like he's thinking. But he sees the writing on the wall, I'm sure at this point now too, with Hogan coming in. So I'm sure he's frustrated. So Austin gets that win and he's. He's kind of screwed. All right, so just one last show result before we wrap things up here. May 28, 1990, Charlotte, North Carolina. We had a six man tag match. You had Sting, Dustin Rhodes and Johnny B. Bad defeating Sonic Steve, Beautiful Bobby and Bunkhouse Buck. When Sting pins Bobby with the stinger splash for the win. That wraps up things here for episode 24 of stunning Steve Hollywood and Vine, May 1994. And we're going to wrap things up in just a moment. But before we do that, take a listen to our pal Alex Dorio of Talking Taker. Then we'll be right back with the Bottom Line wrap up.
Speaker F:All right, Bottom Line cast listeners, this is Alex Doria, one half of the Talking Taker podcast. Speaker B:All systems operating with in normal design parameters Engage Somatic generation sequence malfunction.
Speaker A:Next.
Speaker C:On WCW Saturday Night.
Speaker B:All right, we're back now for the Bottom Line wrap up. And next month in August, we'll be coming at you with June of 1994 and we'll have Clash of the Champions to cover. So jv, another Johnny B. Bad match. Let's see if Johnny Be Bad improves good. Yeah. Will he be good? Will he be bad? Will he be sad? Will it be sucky? We'll see how Johnny will be next month. So that's the big match that we'll watch along with. But there's other matches where he takes on Eric Watts. He takes on Marcus Alexander. Bagwell poor, you know, bad news about Bagwell. The amputation in the, in the current day, that sucks. But we'll be covering him next. Next month also, Austin will be taking on Terry Taylor. So we got, we got a few matches in store, but the main one is the Clash of Champions match, June of 1994. So that'll be next time on the Bottom Line Wrestling cast stunning Steve. Okay, but also check out some other things. Talk. Check out Talking Taker. And their latest episode, which they dropped in July, which is the beginning of this month, was all about Mean Mark. It was their second Mean Mark episode where they covered another span of Mean Mark and wcw. Very good shit there. So check that out. They'll have a new episode coming out August 1st, which I think is fantasy draft of SummerSlam matches throughout the history of SummerSlam. And that's like a roundtable discussion. So they did that with WrestleMania a few months back. Now they're doing it with SummerSlam. So that's a good one to check out. That'll be out August 1st and then also the following month, September 1st on Talking Taker. It'll be JV and I as their guests. We're going to be doing an episode with them sometime in August and It'll be released September 1st. And we'll be watching an episode of World Class Championship Wrestling when Steve Austin or Steve Williams and Mark Callis or Mark Calloway, I think he was going as the Punisher at that time. I forget. But they have their first match ever against each other and we'll be watching that along with whatever else is on that episode of World Class Championship Wrestling. So I'll be watch along style with Travis, alex, me and JV. Always fun. So that'll be coming out on September 1st over at Talking Taker.
