Stunning Steve: E23 - Foreign Affair: April '94
Episode 23 - Special Series - Stunning Steve

Transcript
How stupid are you guys?
Speaker B:All you people out there in TV.
Speaker A:Land, you just make me sick. We told the world what we were gonna do and we went out and did it. The wrestler who will dominate the sport like no other wrestler can. WCW has tried way too long to try to hold me back. The whole facade, who cares? No one cares. No one can beat.
Speaker B:Welcome to the bottom line, wrestlecast. The career of Stone Cold Steve Austin. We are back with another episode of Stunning Steve. This is episode 23, Foreign Affair, April of 1994. And I'm like Prue, along with JV and JV. I had, I was struggling a little bit with coming up a name for this episode. How do you define this? It's. He's going up against a great Muda. That's the big thing here. And he takes on like these fake Japanese guys along the way. And Foreign Affair, I don't know.
Speaker C:It works though.
Speaker B:The G works.
Speaker C:Yeah, it works because.
Speaker B:Yeah, that's really. That's all that's going on here is like, oh, Austin's gonna face the foreign wrestlers. Even though as we'll get into it, many of them are not. But yeah, so that's that, you know, that's the episode. Thanks guys for joining us here again. Another. Another month, another episode of Stunning Steve. So we head into april 94 and a big pay per view here. It's Spring Stampede and we got a good match coming up or. Yeah, we'll see, we'll see. Good match against great Muda. But again, I'm Mike PR along with jv as always, give us a follow on X at Bottom line Cast, follow me Mike Peru at NPRUA 3, follow JV at John Van Damage. And please, wherever you get your podcast, if they allow for ratings and reviews, I don't even know if they do that anymore. But yeah, please go ahead and give us a little review. Only if you like us, by the way. So we're not, we're not gonna waste any time because you know, you guys get one episode a month. So let's just get right into it and JV is gonna stop things off, right? We're in April of 94. JV, you got WCW Saturday night. So what do we got?
Speaker C:Yeah, so we're in Orlando from aired on 4-2-94. And it's. And it's stunning Steve Austin versus Pat Tanaka San.
Speaker B:Your cousin, son.
Speaker C:Yeah, not my cousin, my girl.
Speaker B:Oh, your dad's. Oh, that's right.
Speaker C:But so this match is supposed to be another like trial match for Austin, you know, kind of setting him up for his match against the great Muda on our special today for spring stampede 94. So stone cold staring into the camera on his way to the rink, he calls himself the greatest US champion of all time. The match starts slow with Austin and Tanaka kind of testing distance. But then Tanaka gets aggressive and hits Austin with of course an array of martial arts strikes. Because every Asian in wrestling lore does martial arts of course, and throws, which ends up with Austin scattering to the outside. Back in the ring, Austin eventually gets in control on the mat with Tanaka in a headlock Austin uses to neutralize Tanaka's speed. Because he's, you know, he's pretty quick, you got to give him that and he's bringing a ton of energy and he wants to wear him down for a solid few minutes. So. Back on their feet, Tanaka lands a leg drag and makes a wish on Austin with an elbow to the groin area, followed by some mat control. Tanaka hits Austin with a flying double jab, which is pretty awful looking move and a pin for only a two count. It kind of looked like a botch and they called it a flying double jab, I guess. Austin eventually lands a massive lariat on Tanaka followed by a two count, but he goes for a nonchalant cover. Austin tries to leapfrog Tanaka, but Tanaka counterslams into a pretty impressive sit down powerbomb and he only gets a two count which in like 1997 like ends most matches. Back on their feet, Austin grapevines Tanaka's legs off the ropes and he transitions that into his new finishing hold called the Hollywood and Vine. Tanaka tries to endure the pain but quickly taps and Austin gets the victory. After the match we get a little bit of post match interview with Mean Gene, Stunning Steve Austin and Colonel Parker, so you can give that a listen. It's only about two minutes long and we'll be right back to run through it.
Speaker A:Trip to Tinseltown, to Hollywood and Vine.
Speaker D:Your winner, Stunning Steve.
Speaker A:Now let's go to Mean Gene Okerlit.
Speaker D:Well fans, you've seen Stunning Steve Austin, United States heavyweight champ, tuning up on these Japanese opponents in preparation for his beating his title defense against the Great Buddha. Two weeks from this Sunday night at the Spring Stampede in Chicago, Colonel Robert Parker, Stunning Steve. Gentlemen, come on in. Colonel, before we get to the champ, I've got to ask you about Bunkhouse Buck and the natural Dutch Buster Roast. He ran you off?
Speaker A:No, he did not run me off. What he did, he fell right into my trap. I brought Buck in here to do a Job on him. Now, you've done the worst thing you could do, and that's rile. Buck up. Cause you're sure to get that fire beat out of your hood. Spring Stampede.
Speaker D:All right, Colonel. I see you've got an attic shave with you. Anything of significance in there?
Speaker A:That right there, that suitcase. You're looking at that. Get your hands off of that. That suitcase right there is the most important suitcase on the face of this earth. You might as well say this here suitcase is carrying the gold.
Speaker D:All right. Stunning Steve Austin, the big one for you. And I see you've knocked off another Japanese opponent this week. And as I understand, more to come, more to come.
Speaker A:And I can't think, I can't thank Carla Parker enough for bringing the competition to me. But before we go on to the Great Muda and the United States title at Spring Stampede, let me just tell Ric Flair, the man who slights me in every interview he makes, the man who's ducking me right now because of a DQ match with me and Ricky Steamboat, that I'm not facing Ric Flair. That's not right, Ric Flair, and you know it. I am the number one contender, whether you think so or not, moving on to the Great Muda Spring Stampede. Muda, I don't know a whole lot about you. I know you're a great wrestler. And by the same token, you know I'm the United States champion. The same rule book they handed you when you stepped off the plane is the same rule book I threw in the trench game. So at Muda Spring Stampede, you better be at your best, because you can bet your bottom dollar that Stunning Steve will be all right.
Speaker D:I thank you very much, gentlemen. Stunning Steve Austin, two weeks from this Sunday night in Chicago at the Spring Stampede, locks up with the Great Muda. See it all on Pay Per View. Colonel, I'll be seeing you later, folks. We're going to be back after this on Saturday night here on tbs. What is it?
Speaker C:All right. So Mean Gene calls both men over, and Mean Jean brings up Bunkhouse Buck. And then how Dustin Rhodes ran off Colonel Parker in a previous episode. Colonel Parker denies the claim, says that Dustin Rhodes actually fell right into Colonel Parker's trap because Parker says he brought in Bunk to do a job on Rhodes. And Rhodes did the worst thing he could do, and that is get Bunk all riled up. So Gene asks Parker, who's, you know, holding a suitcase as usual, what's in the suitcase. He tries to touch it, and Parker tells him, you know, get his hands off it. He kind of reacts real quickly. Parker calls it the most important suitcase on the face of this earth. And you say it's carrying the gold. Austin chimes in and says there's more to come, and he thanks Parker for bringing in the competition from Japan. But Austin does take a moment here to take some shots at Ric Flair for throwing shade at Austin every chance he gets in interviews, and basically how he's ducking Austin and giving him his rightful match. Austin says it's not right that he's not facing him, and he calls himself the number one contender, whether Ric Flair likes it or not. Austin now moves on to Muta. Muta. Austin says he doesn't know a lot about him, but knows he's a great wrestler and. But Muda knows in return that he's the United States Champion. He said the rulebook they handed to Muta, we get off the plane, is the rule book Austin threw into the trash can at Spring Stampede. Austin says Muda better be at his best, because you can bet your bottom dollar that Austin will be.
Speaker B:Yeah. So right there, you know, Austin's getting set up with this match with great Muda. He doesn't seem excited about it because he wants a match against Ric Flair. And. Jimmy, you need a drink of water, I think. Why? I don't know. You're. You're clearing your throat.
Speaker C:I didn't clean my throat.
Speaker B:Oh, okay.
Speaker C:Unless I'm getting Alzheimer's.
Speaker B:Okay. So. Yeah, so. Yeah, good, good. Good coverage there. I mean. Yeah. Shitty match as always. You know, that's the thing. We don't have a lot.
Speaker C:It wasn't that bad of a match.
Speaker B:No, it's just a. You know, it's. It's. It is what it is. Yeah. Right.
Speaker C:The powerbomb spot was pretty good. Yeah, Larry. Like, it wasn't terrible, but it was, you know, it was some sloppy ass parts, though. Even the finish, like his finisher was kind of sloppy at the end.
Speaker B:Yeah. And just what I'm saying, though, is it's more like this. These are essentially squash matches leading to the great Muda. So we're not expecting anything spectacular or special. But yes, Pat Tanaka is a great opponent because he actually was a legit wrestler, you know, he wasn't always a jobber. You know, I'm gonna cover a match which is more jobberish right now. Oh, yeah. My point being just this. Yeah. Austin's gonna run through these guys. We know that. You know, but he has his sights on the Heavyweight Championship, and that's what he was told, basically. Is that you'd be getting to that level. But then here we are Now, April of 94, and Hogan's already signed. So.
Speaker C:Yeah, so the whole game plan, Austin is a casualty. It's getting blown up.
Speaker B:Right? All right, so I'll continue on. And I'm going to cover an episode of WCW Pro from April 2, 1994. And this was recorded in Atlanta, Georgia, center stage. And what the notes say is that this was from March 30th, 1994. And I got a match of stunning Steve Austin versus Sonny Rogers. Okay, so I told you. Yeah, it's going to be a lower level. And this isn't even a Japanese guy or anything, it's just Sonny Rogers. But what we have here on WCW Pro, which is nice, is he had Gordon Sully on commentary along with Dusty Rhodes and Larry Zabis. So even if the match sucks, it's fun to just listen to those guys talk and that becomes a lot of commentary here. All right, so as I said, we have this match taped on March 30, which is six days after the match that JV just covered. And the match that JV covered. Austin had new ring gear during that match. Austin had new black boots that said stunning along the side. It said Stunning Steve on the back of his ass in black tights. And he was no longer wearing that Hollywood Blondes gear. So that was some new gear that he was wearing in that previous match against Pat Tanaka. But now here, which is supposed to be taped after he's back to his old Hollywood Blondes white boots with the star. And maybe Austin was like, yeah, that, that gear, that shit's uncomfortable. I'm gonna go back to my old boots. So, I mean, it could be as simple as that. But you never know. You don't know what the way that they recorded these things. But he has his old gear back on here in this match, and he's taking on Sonny Rogers and he's excited to be there. He gives his little Hang Tens hand sign because he used to be known as like, Beach Guy Sonny Rogers, and he gives them hang 10. Larry says that Sonny Rogers has a big heart, but a little body. What a dickhead. To say.
Speaker C:That's very condescending. What a douche.
Speaker B:It's not even like Larry is big either. Larry maybe like 6ft tall. Sonny Rogers. Yeah, Sonny Rogers probably like 5, 8, 5, 9 or whatever. Like, but you're gonna call somebody a little guy because he's three inches shorter than you. Get the out of here. Anyway, Larry says that and then Dusty, Dusty Rhodes gets on. Yeah, I'm gonna do it guys. I'm gonna give my little Dusty he said, Austin is young lion of the 90s, baby. This, this man right here has all the tools to be one of the greatest verses of the WCW to ever step in the ring. Pretty good, you know, all things. But the fact that he says that though just. And it's come up numerous times we've said this and we've made comments on how many times people have mentioned Austin as being an up and comer. And then it's like, ah, okay, we, we know because we know. But did anybody listen to anybody that said these things on tv? Like people that had power, like it's not just hyping somebody that you think is gonna like, like they knew because it's Dusty Rhodes in at other times it was other veterans too that would say this. So anyway, we get the match started here. Austin starts the match. He locks up, he gets an arm ring, a whip toss, hip toss to Sonny. Austin attacks Rogers on the mat. He steps on Roger's right foot and then starts twisting his left leg. And Gordon Soley's on commentary here. Nice to hear him here. He says this is a variation of a toehold. Then Austin then leads down on it, then drops to the mat, which Hyper extends that leg. Austin sent Sonny up to the middle rope. Colonel Parker is now on, on the, on the outside. And he's always good to get in somebody's face. And he stops talking trash to Sonny. Austin needs Rogers in the back multiple times. And then body slams him in the center of the ring. And follow that, he follows that up with a knee drop right to Sonny Rogers face. Austin goes for a quick pin, only gets a one count. Austin locks Sonny up in the front chancery. Sonny is locked in that hold and he pushes down, he pushes down on it. And he gets Austin into the corner. Then referee Nick Patrick calls for a break. Austin complies with the break. Sonny hits a few shoulder blocks to Austin. Austin immediately gains control with a little cheap shot. He gets an irate Austin pushes Rogers into the corner, gives him a series of stroll the box again. Larry continues on commentary saying that Rogers is not in Austin's league. And it's like, no, we know this is a squash match. Sonny Rogers is not at Austin's level. And Austin on cue is done with this. He whips Rogers to the ropes, lifts him up. Boom. Stun gun drops Rogers across the top rope. 1, 2, 3. Austin wins. 2 minutes 35 seconds. As Dusty says here he Wraps up the match, he says, and he quotes either Willie Nelson or Don Meredith. I don't know who he was trying to go for. Either. Both of them. But he says, you can turn out the lights, the party's over. Although the actual quote is, turn out the lights, party's over. Not you can cut out the lights, but hey, we all up. So Dusty Rhodes was given that quote. That's a great line. It's Don Meredith, you know, who's a football player. And he was an announcer.
Speaker C:Yep.
Speaker B:Even when the game was a blowout, he would say that. Well, it's from a Willie Nelson song. Oh, is it? Yeah, that's where it came from. I didn't know that either. I always just thought it was from football. But it makes sense that somebody that actually sings and writes songs came up with that other than Don Meredith. All right, so let me just give a few house show results here. From April 8th, 9th and 10th, it's the same result. These shows were in Manhattan, Kansas City. Kansas City, Kansas, not Missouri. And then they went to Springfield, Missouri, and all these crowds were around. Well, the first one In Manhattan was 880. And then you had two crowds of about 2,000 people. And you had Steve Austin defeat Brian Pillman each of those nights. And from there, jv, you got Worldwide Wrestling. What's going on in Worldwide Wrestling next?
Speaker C:So Worldwide Wrestling, we're still in Orlando, Florida here. And this was aired on April 16, 1994. And we got stunning Steve versus Mark Starr. So the contest was set for one fall. Austin is out first. Mark Starr is already in the ring. Parker gets to the ring first though, and he does the announcers honors for Austin. You know, come into the ring here. Meanwhile. Meanwhile, Jesse wants to know what's in the briefcase. Right. It's the big question, Mark. Everyone wants to know. Colonel park is parading around briefcase, what's in it? Tony says he'll tell him after Gary finishes introductions. So I think Jesse was just kind of playing to like to like the broadcast here, acting like he didn't know. Because we know that Colonel Parker in the last episode I covered referred to the briefcases having the gold. So Tony takes the opportunity remind everyone that the briefcase represents the gold and that Colonel Parker will reveal more of that at Spring Stampede this coming Sunday. Jesse asks if it's blocks of gold, and Tony says if it is, you can bet Parker will use them to help Austin. Not much to cover, match wise. Kind of. That was like the most entertaining part of the match was Tony Schiavone and Jesse the body Austin wins with the stun gun, which makes sense because it was a right. This was technically a non Japanese opponent, Right?
Speaker B:True. Yeah. So he was usually using that Hollywood. Hollywood vine, right? Yeah. Which was also known as the full O lock which Colonel Robert Parker had used previously. And yeah, he usually use it against Japanese opponents to show that he could do some submissions. Yeah, good point that on Moxar it just drop him on top of the roof.
Speaker C:Yeah, so that's exactly what he did.
Speaker B:And also this is from February of 94 too. So this is way early.
Speaker C:Yeah, technically he didn't have it yet.
Speaker B:Yeah, he probably even know how to do it.
Speaker C:Yeah. So Tony says confirms that he's saving that submission hold for great Muta. Next we've got an audio clip. It's just on the two minutes long. It's an interview and it's mean Gene. And we got him again with Stunning Steve Austin and Colonel Parker. Give it a listen and we'll be right back.
Speaker D:Welcome back, fans. We're going to get you back to the ring here. Just a moment or two. Standing beside me right now, United States Heavyweight Champion Stunning Steve Austin along with Colonel Robert Parker. Stunning Steve this Sunday at the Spring Stampede. Japanese great Muda.
Speaker A:Onto that in a minute, Gene. I can't believe that I don't have a little more time to prepare for an interview. I think WCW needs to start treating me like the star that I am.
Speaker D:You're dressing like.
Speaker A:And that Spring Stampede. Yes, I am. At Spring Stampede. You can bet your bottom dollar. You can bet your bottom dollar that the great Muda is going to show me a lot more respect than wcw. You can bet on that.
Speaker D:Well, I'll tell you what, Colonel Parker, you've got him dressing up pretty good in that puxito.
Speaker A:He looks up powder and I'm gonna fire him off at the Spring Stampede and be guaranteed about that.
Speaker D:Well, you're. You're gonna be representing a couple of men at the Spring Stampede, including Bunkhouse Buck.
Speaker A:That's of course I am. I'm gonna say this every time you see me. Y' all gonna see me with this here suitcase because I got the world's title in this. You'd have to take my arm off at the elbow to get it away from.
Speaker D:Thank you very much, Colonel World title in there. Let's get you back to the ring.
Speaker A:Ladies and gentlemen, the following feature confrontation.
Speaker C:All right, so Austin is a little bit of different attire on here here. He's dressed to the nines, dudes in a tuxedo Austin says he can't believe he doesn't have more time to prepare for this interview. WCW needs to start start treating him like the star he is. And then Mean Gene kind of interrupts Austin before he can start ramping, you know, kind of going on a rant, and acknowledges that Austin is deed dressed like a star. So G makes a point to call out how sharp Austin's looking tonight. Austin says, as it says at Spring Stampede, you can bet your bottom dollar that's like the new thing he's using, right? Bottom dollar. Because he said it in the last episode that the great Muda is going to show him more respect than WCW is currently showing Austin. So Austin clearly showing how bitter he is about not getting that title shot against Ric Flair. I like how Austin continuously kind of brings up how, like, WW is him. Austin grabs the belt from Parker and poses it, you know, while smiling. Gene reminds Parker that he'll be representing multiple people Spring Stampede, including Bunkhouse Buck. Parker says every time you see him, you'll see him with his suitcase and he has the world title in it and you'll have to cut him off at the elbow to get it. So we know it's in it for sure now. He definitely confirmed it's the title. So I guess we're not waiting till. Till Spring Stampede. So. Yeah, was that the whole point? Like we were gonna wait till Spring Stampede to find out?
Speaker B:Yeah, I thought so. And why the would he have the world title?
Speaker C:I bet you, like you said it was in February, so they probably rewrote it.
Speaker B:Yes.
Speaker C:And then never went back and edited it.
Speaker B:Absolutely. Oh, yeah. And there's no information about that because I've. I've looked at what's available in terms of, you know, dirt sheet, and there's nothing that ever said, oh, he was supposed to get the title, blah, blah, blah, you know, so, yeah, they up. They were gonna probably have him involved in the world title scene and, oh, we got Hulk Hogan it. Yeah. Okay. Now another thing that you bring up here is, you know, Austin was dressed in the nines, right? He's all looking good in this suit. I just wanted to make a connection to previous episodes of the Bottom Line Wrestling cast the career of Stone Cold Steve Austin. Now, it was a big deal when Austin wore a suit after he won the championship at WrestleMania 14. And he came out, he wore the suit in that whole big segment where it's like, this is the last time you'll see me wearing monkey suit like this. Or whatever. The.
Speaker C:Yeah, classic moment.
Speaker B:Yeah. It's funny that he's like willingly like, yeah, I'm wearing a suit because I'm a superstar. That's how it is. And then his character completely changes. It's like this suit now wearing this. But it fits. It fits the storyline like stunning. Steve at that age thought, oh, I have to wear this suit to look like I'm a superstar. Then he realized that that like there could be an argument that his. His storyline progresses and it fits through different prom because of how he was up in WCW and then in ecw, he finally started to stand up for himself and then he became stone cold. Very fitting. All right, so I'll continue on now with some WWE Main Event. Main Event, the Sunday night wrestling show. The show that usually sucked the most out of all of them. But hey, it was wrestling on a Sunday night when nothing else was going on. It was April 17, 1994, and this was taped even earlier. January 31, 1994. Oh, man. We're just like going back in time throughout this. Like, we start early, like close to Spring Stampede. And then as we progress through April television, it's just going back and back and back. So anyway, this episode of Main Event is basically a pre show for Spring Stampede. So that's part of it. It's the same night as Spring Stampede. It is a pre show. So they're gonna show a bunch of from previous. And we have Bobby Hinon Meanji in Oakland. They're both wearing tuxedos. And we get the backdrop of Chicago because that's what the show is at the Rosemont Horizon, which is one of Steve Austin's favorite arenas to wrestle in, as he said, because he loves the acoustics there and he hears the crowd the best at Rosemont Horizon. And he always said when he hears the crowd best, he knows what he should be doing in the ring. So little tidbit there. This is actually WCW's first show at the Horizon, so this is probably Steve Austin's first time ever wrestling at the Horizon too. So that'll be something interesting to see how he performs in the Horizon against the Great Muda coming up in a little bit. So most of the segments cover matches from previous weeks that build up to the pay per view. But this main event match that we're gonna that I'm about to cover rather, was unaired, and it's from January. They portray this though as a new match, which is ridiculous because how can you portray this as a new match where Austin has this big match coming up against Great Muda and they can say, oh, just, you know, hours before Austin wrestled in this, in this match, in this shitty tag team match with the fucking Mongolian Mauler and Steve Regal like, and Sting is in the match and get the hell out of here. Now why the hell would Austin do this match or anyone involved in this match an hour before Spring Stampede? I don't know. Now what thought I had though is I would have been dumb enough. I, at this age I would have been dumb enough to believe it. But jv, no way, no way you were dumb enough. And, and even if you were and you watch this with your dad, your dad would have called and told you so your dad would have known, he would have been like, hey, this is old, don't worry about it. But I would have been sucking into believing this was a real match happening that night. All right, from there now we get a, a very strange, strange segment and I'm gonna play some audio. It's about a minute and a half, so take a listen. It's Gene and Bobby. And again, this is a pre show to Spring Stampede. So a lot of this is recorded at different times. It's just all over the place. But take a listen to this, it'll be right back.
Speaker D:All right fans, the countdown is underway tonight here in Chicago live on pay per view at six o' clock local time. Seven o' clock Eastern daylight time. Contact your local cable company right now regarding availability. Fans, don't be shut out from this truly extraordinary card. I say extraordinary. I've been around this sport for nearly a quarter of a century. Bobby Heenan. And this is one of the greatest I've ever seen. Well, you know, I've been here wrestling in Chicago. I've wrestled at Soldiers Field, Sox park.
Speaker A:The Amphitheater, you name it, I've done.
Speaker D:It here in the city of Chicago.
Speaker A:And in this area around here.
Speaker D:I've never been involved in a car this big with this many important matches, this many title matches, this many career ending matches. This is going to be fun. This is see who goes to the hospital. That's a sick thought. Heenan right now standing by, Tony Schiavone, Jesse the Body Ventura there in the arena. And they've got more information regarding our main event this week. Gentlemen, take it away. Thanks a lot guys. Jesse, a big six man tag. Sting, Dustin Rhodes and their partner Flying Brian against the Mongolian Mauler. His partners will be Lord Steven Regal and stunning Steve. 3 against 3 or 4 against 4? 2. Fans, we're lost here. Guys, back to you. What are you talking all Right. Apparently Jesse Ventura can't talk. Tony Shivani really doesn't know how many fingers he's got on his hand.
Speaker A:Well, he's got six on each foot.
Speaker D:Three of those are thumbs, three of them are thumb.
Speaker B:Very.
Speaker D:Hey, right now from WCW Worldwide at Disney mg. All right, so Bobby and.
Speaker B:Jean at their fake little center where they're doing this pre show. They cut to Tony and Jesse who are supposed to be at Spring Stampede. They're in front of a green screen and they talk about the main event match that's coming up. And we got a big main event match coming up for main event leading into Spring Stampede things long, guys. And Jesse, you know, so Tony says, thanks a lot, guys. Jesse, we got a big six man match. Sting, Dustin Rhodes and their partner Flying Brian taking on Mongolian Mahler and his partners, Lord Steven Regal and Stunning Steve. First off, I hate the phrasing of that. Do not say this is Mongolian Mauler and his partners Lord Steven Regal and Stunning Steve. Get the out of here. Mongolia. Paul is the pawner of Regal in Stunning Steve. They're not second to him. The out of here. This is only like his third and fourth in his last match ever in wcw, by the way. So again, this is a prime example of pre production just, you know, sucking and it's not live. So Jesse responds. Jesse gives a response. He goes three against three, three against three or four against two? He's not making any sense. Like you think you probably just heard that and think I didn't make sense. No, that was Jesse. Jesse didn't make sense. And Toting Tony Schiavone doesn't know what to make of it. He says, fans, we are lost here. Fans, let's get back to you. Then he turns to Jesse. What are you talking about? And then when they get back to Mean Gene and Bobby, Mean Gene says, apparently Jesse Ventura can't talk. So it was a whole segment ruined. But the thing is like, that was recorded. It's not like they were live doing that together. So they took whatever Tony and Jesse did.
Speaker C:Good point.
Speaker B:We still used it even though it sucked.
Speaker C:Yeah, even though it was still trash.
Speaker B:Right? And then they just use it as a way for Mean Gene to be like, hey, Jesse Ventura can't talk. He sucks. It's a up. Who cares? I appreciate that though. It's kind of funny in a way. It's, ah, we up. Hey, let's throw it in. We got a bunch of old matches playing here today anyway, so what's the difference? Who's even watching this, hopefully somebody gets the pay per view. All right, so that brings us now to the match. Which man this is the match. I guess it's on paper it's a good match, but it shouldn't have been right before Spring Stampede. They should have played it back in January when it was actually recorded.
Speaker C:Yeah, really?
Speaker B:Four months, right. All right, so you have stunning Steve, Mongolia Mall and Steve Real taking on Sting, Brian Pillman, Dustin Rhodes. We have the baby faces come to the match. They come to the ring first. And the crowd, they go nuts. As they should. It's a great team. Sting Rhodes, Pillman. Hell yeah. The heels are already outside the ring so we missed that. And fine, good, don't waste any more time. And Brian Pillman is flapping his arms at Colonel Parker. So we're doing a chicken suit, right? So that's still going on. So we know this is an old ass match at this point because got that chicken soup. And man, are we gonna get to a point where there's no more chicken suit references. Alex Dorio of talking Taker. He listened to our previous episode. He's like I can't believe the chicken suit thing's still going on in somehow some way.
Speaker C:Yeah.
Speaker B:And here it is again.
Speaker C:It's terrible.
Speaker B:Still ringing his chicken head into this episode too. So anyway, we got Jesse doing a recent pre recorded commentary. He makes sure to mention that the audience knows that, you know, Pillman is doing that in reference to putting Colonel Parker in a chicken suit. Now this is good because Jesse is doing new commentary months later and he's just reminding the audience like this happened because he knows this was months ago. Some people might not know at all what the hell is going on with these like waving and flapping the arms. So he lets the audience know Brian Pillman put Colonel Parker in a chicken suit. That's why this is happening. Okay, let's move on from it. So Jesse being a pro, great on commentary and hey, he still has it, you know, just had a WWE Saturday night's main event where he's still doing his thing and calling out people for. So Jesse Victoria's the no matter what. All right, so the match finally starts. You get the heels try to sneak attack in the ring, but Sting, Dustin Rhodes and Pillman, they go to town on Austin Regal. We got the Mongolian mauler. He's just hanging out, he's being a little puss outside the ring. I, I really think he doesn't know what he's supposed to do. And he's just letting his partners catch A beating. Jesse then gets on commentary saying, it's. It's three on two. The Mahler is standing outside of the ring. What is he doing out there? He's letting his partners get hammered. So again, Jesse just calling the obvious. Like, this guy is an idiot. The Mongolian mall. He doesn't know what he's doing. I'm gonna make sure that I mentioned he doesn't know what the hell he's doing because I'm not covering his ass because he sucks. So we got Sting, Pillman and Dustin dominating in the ring. The ring gets cleared. Parker. Colonel Parker is outside. He's fanning Austin. You're making him feel better. Austin's outside the ring.
Speaker C:Cowardly thing he does, but it's.
Speaker B:It's great. It's great. Heat building. It's like because you just think, oh, Austin is now such a wuss too, that he needs Colonel park at the helm. We have Sir William as well out there with Lord Stephen. And then the dumbass Mauler is walking around. He's just walking around like a jackass. And then he creeps up to the camera like his buddies are getting beat up. His tag team partners, they're getting beat up. And he creeps to a camera. Then he starts sticking his tongue up. Yeah, yeah. Like, what the fuck are you doing? This guy sucks. Like he's literally just going up to the camera to get his face on the screen, stick out his tongue, doing nothing. Like he's unaware of what he's supposed to be doing in the ring. And this is only three minutes into the match. And that's the thing with me covering job of matches. My jobber covering of matches goes double the amount of the time of a job. But anyway, we're three minutes into this. It's been no real start to this match. No wonder it wasn't televised back in January. And now they're just throwing it on this Spring Stampede pre show. It's basically a filler match. They figured out this stars in this match, but the match sucked. That's why it's been off TV for three months. So we finally get a lock up. It's Sting and Regal. Sting hits a back body drop. A backdrop rather. Regal rolls out of the ring being a little puss. That's fine. Building more. He. But dude, we've been heat building for this whole opening segment. Wrestle. So now we're on the outside. Regal extends his hand to tag in his partner. But. Huh? What? You're on the outside of the ring. You can't take. He's trying to tag jb. He's trying to tag somebody into the ring from the outside of the ring. He's. He's on the net. It's kind of funny though, but. And I would think that Regal knew that and thought it was. Would be funny like if, if he's probably thinking, if Montgomery is gonna do stupid, I'm gonna do stupid now too. Anyway, Austin looks disgusted. He walks away. So he just walks away. Mongolia. The Mauler, he tags. I don't even want to give him proper Mongolian. This is the molar. The mall attack.
Speaker C:It's easier to say too. I had a hard time with that last episode.
Speaker B:Yeah, yeah, yeah, true. So the Mall attacks in Regal. Nick Patrick tells Mauler, you're not the legal guy. Patrick starts counting Regal out of the ring. Appreciate that, actually. A referee paying attention to what's going on. And he's probably sick of the Mongolian mall of as well. Like, dude, you're not paying attention to anything going on. So Regal re enters and locks up with Sting. Regal blocks with an Irish whip from Sting. He slaps a few knife edge stops on Sting and tags in the shitty Mauler. And then Tony Schiavone says, forget about any wrestling holds here in regards to the Mauler. Good call. Tony Mall gives things a few throat thrust, which is all he can really do, but he does do a snap mirror and a knee drop. Jesse says he loves the little hair knot that the Mauler has because he has that little pinhead hair knot on top of his head. And I think Jesse might be serious about this though, because Jesse's had haircuts like that, so he's been known to have those shitty haircuts just like the Mongolian Mauler. Then we continue. Mongolian Maul stomps Sting's chest a couple times, scratches Sting's chest and then chops Sting into the corner. Then tags in Austin. Austin, once he gets in the ring, he whips Sting to the corner. He charges, but Sting gets a leg up and boots Austin in the mouth and quickly tags in Dusty Rhodes. Dustin Rhodes. Dustin goes to work on Austin, punches him in the chest. We get an elbow to the head. Irish whip springboard attempt, but Austin blocks it, pushes Dustin to the center of the ring. Dustin gets up. Austin nails him a couple times and then hits him with a running clothesline. And then Dustin is stumbling and falls out of the ring through the second rope. Mongolian Mahler attacks Dustin on the outside with a body slam, followed by a couple stomps. Dustin makes his Way back to the apron after that. And Austin is ready for him. And Austin snaps Dustin's neck over the top rope to get him back in the ring. And Austin gets a few stomps for a good measure. And then he tags in. Well, Steven Regal real heads Dustin with the forearm uppercut. And Tony says that's what's called knocking the taste out of someone's mouth. I don't know why I took that note, but I liked it. The moment now not so cool. Regal follows that up with a butterfly press suplex. Goes for a cover. It only gets two. Regal tags in the Mauler. Dustin is at this point and he's been worked on. Jesse mentions that Austin and company have cut the ring off and Dustin needs to find a way to get out and make a tag. Mongolian Mauler gets a few shots in. Dustin punches back the ball, tags in Austin. Dustin gets close to a tag, but Austin cuts him off and he's Dustin in the head. Austin goes for a cover. The ref is distracted by Colonel Parker. Jesse's bitching about this. Where's the ref? Where's the ref? He's totally out of position. Wake up, pal. Wake up, pal. Jesse Vitura, he doesn't care. He just likes to call it as it is. Oftentimes he's been known as a commentator that's gonna just be on the hillside. Sometimes he's just against referees that don't know what the they're doing. And that's one of these instances. And that's probably another reason why I didn't air. Tony mentions, and Jesse agrees that, you know, this is Colonel Parker's fault. And fine, you know, Austin gets dusted into a reverse chin lock, and he gets him in the center of the rink. And this is again, I like to point this out. This is time to talk finish. So we're finally getting to that point. Dustin's starting to fight back now. Sting and Pillman are anticipating in a hot tag. Pillman, who haven't talked about at all fucking been MIA in this match here. And he starts slapping the turnbuckle. You know, again, this is the most work he's done the entire match, is slapping on the top turnbuckle. We got the Mauler in here, and he's working more than Pillman. Ridiculous. So Dustin tries to break the chin lock with a few elbows. Austin regains control on a weak Dustin. Austin punches him into the corner, land some shoulder blocks, and then Dustin is back with a nice jawbreaker. And we get a quote here now. Now we Got a race to see if Dustin Rhodes can get to the corner first or stunning Steve. Steve got there first and then tagged in the Mongolian Mall. Oh, why would he choose Mongolian Waller to tag him?
Speaker C:Terrible.
Speaker B:What we doing here? Like, why is this guy getting so much work? Baller's in. He's slow to get in.
Speaker C:Was their roster that thin though? Probably.
Speaker B:It's just that at this point he was associated with Colonel Parker. They had to have him teaming with him. Yeah, you know what I mean? There's other people that could have had him with.
Speaker C:True.
Speaker B:Finally, Mauler's slow to get in. Dustin reaches out. He tags in Pillman. Finally, finally, Pillman's in. Pillman jumps in, leaps over the top rope, gives it to Mahler. Austin Regal run in. Pillman is fighting them off. Sting and Dustin come in to help. Pillman focuses on them all, lands a back body drop on him. Jesse reiterates that this is an example of why you need more than one referee in a six man tag match. He says that a lot. He said that a lot over the years. And I've always been cool with that. That's cool. If there's six men, have two refs, have a ref in the ring, you have a ref on the outside that could, that could, you could work that into angles. That was probably one of his ideas that Vince was like, nah, that pal. But he kept using. He kept saying it for years and years and years though. I always told Vince, we should do this. All right, so anyway, Sting gives a Stinger splash to the baller. Brian Pillman then jumps in Sting's arm. Sting body presses, gives a press slam to Brian Pillman on top of the Mauler. And then we get the COVID Now Pillman's covering the Mauler. One, two, three. Obviously the right person took the pinfall, the Mauler, but man, they highlighted Mauler big time in this match. Waited all the way to the end to get Brian Pillman involved again. Probably major reasons why this didn't air back in. You know, if it was, you know, taped in January, why it wasn't in February or March. And now until this is random episode of main event, that is just a fake pre show, essentially. Like, ah, we gotta use sucked. I mean this action and whatnot. But yeah, the commentary is iffy. It's funny. Yeah, ballers use way too much. Yeah, he's.
Speaker C:You might think he's AJ Styles.
Speaker B:But yeah, that's that. All right, so now we actually get to something that should be pretty good. That's going to be our watch along portion for this episode and It's Spring Stampede 1994. We're gonna take a quick little break and we'll be right back to get us set up for this watch along of Stunning Steve Austin defending against the Great Muda. The thunder of hoofbeats.
Speaker D:The swirling clouds of dust. A whole bunch of double tough hombres looking for trouble and ready for action.
Speaker B:The brand.
Speaker D:WCW the showdown. Spring Stampede Sunday, April 17, 7pm Eastern.
Speaker C:Live and only on pay per view.
Speaker A:Call your local cable operator for availability.
Speaker B:All right, so we're back now and we're gonna move on to our watch along portion of the episode at Spring Stampede 1994 from Chicago, Illinois at the Rosemont Horizon. It's April 17, 1994 with 12,000 people in attendance. So good crowd there. Chicago fans always come out for sure. We got Stunning Steve Austin taking on the great Muda for the US Championship match. And we're gonna watch this. And yeah, I don't know if this is actually the same thing that's available on the network, so I can't say that you can watch along with those. But for Jamie and I think yeah, it's probably not the same, but I'll give a countdown regardless. So wherever you find it. And start with where the match is about to begin after the promo with Gene Oakland and Johnny V Bad. And we'll start from there. For us it's 48 minutes and 58 seconds. So JV and I need to get synced up. So you at the same spot, jv?
Speaker C:Yes.
Speaker B:All right, I'll give. I'll give us countdown as always. Three down to one, then say play. When I say play, we Both click play. 3, 2, 1. Play. Well, I'll tell you something, Tony. Oh, I like the. I like the Spring Stampede little graphics that they used.
Speaker C:Yeah, yeah, that's cool.
Speaker B:Red Dead Redemption or something. And that classic old school wanted poster western. Yeah, I gotta put this louder below my volume because I can't hear well. Here's the great Muda.
Speaker C:Looks like quang.
Speaker B:This Michael Buffer. Yeah, I think it's Michael Buffer.
Speaker C:Yeah, I remember when he used to wrestling.
Speaker B:He was always on nitro during the main events. But it's Bruce for right. I think it's Michael. Michael is. Let's get ready to rumble on. Yeah, that's Michael Buffer. So that. Yeah, that's right. At this time, Michael Buffer was doing WCW pay per views and he would do only championship matches. So because this is the US Championship match, he. He did it. They're getting there. Bang for the buck. I think I had my pay per view audio way too loud here. Anything you said, jv, if you said anything.
Speaker C:I didn't say anything. I was just about to say something about Austin's outfit though.
Speaker B:It's pretty cool. Oh, the jacket, Is that a new jacket?
Speaker C:I can't remember if it's new or not, but it's cool.
Speaker B:But he is wearing the gear that he was wearing in the first match that you covered earlier. He's got the black boots, black tights that say his name.
Speaker C:I don't think that's the same jacket though.
Speaker B:It might be a different jacket.
Speaker C:I just didn't put it in my notes.
Speaker B:Look at Austin just getting into great mood. His face too. Like, hey guy, hey youngster talking. It's funny how like a stunning Steve Austin match versus Great Muda. That makes sense. But imagine a stone cold versus great mood of match. Doesn't fit.
Speaker C:How much younger is he than Austin here?
Speaker B:I don't know. Let me take a look. Great mood is born in 62. Austin might be close Saturday night.
Speaker D:You know, know that for the past three or four weeks, Colonel Rob Parker brought some of the wrestlers from Japan.
Speaker B:Here to Buddha's about two years older.
Speaker C:Oh, older. That's what I thought. I just thought it was weird. They. I guess he said it condescendingly when he called him kid.
Speaker B:No, I, I said that.
Speaker C:Oh, oh.
Speaker B:I was just projecting what he might have said when he was just getting in his face because Austin always did that. Oh yeah, son. They looked at him in Japan like, like the people here look to stink. I mean, but the fact that they are that same age, it's like two years difference. That's nothing. The country's his. But for whatever reason, I always thought that great Muda had like so much more mystique that I thought he'd been around for years and years and years. Years. You know what I mean? Yep. Just seemed like, oh, this guy is like a mystery. He's from another country. His face is painted. He must be around for a while. I don't know. Or I always thought Austin was just, ah, it's a young guy.
Speaker A:They're very careful with each other, aren't they?
Speaker B:This would have been the time that I started actually seeing Austin mid 94. I didn't see this pay per view.
Speaker C:I have my people going back. I love Heenan knows everyone. Big right hand from Austin, Tony. Agreed. Missing one ear. In a brain.
Speaker B:In a brain.
Speaker C:Abdominal stretch.
Speaker B:That move can Be very effective. It's also a. Also one of those moves where you figure out what you're gonna do next. Yeah, transition. What I'm noticing here is the respect.
Speaker A:They have for each other. Nobody's jumping down each other's throat real quick.
Speaker D:No one's making bad moves.
Speaker B:They're really trying to feel each other.
Speaker A:I see what they're about.
Speaker B:I like when Bobby Hinn actually gives explanations about what's going on. Like you just did. And then he comes up with a joke.
Speaker D:Just a couple of words.
Speaker B:I don't have time to teach him. Yes. Tony, you know what muda means in Japanese? I know a few words. Yeah. I don't have time to teach you. How much life did mean Jean and Bobby bring to WCW in 94, late 93.
Speaker C:A lot. Too bad they didn't really have the roster to support them. Well, they did.
Speaker B:They would get it.
Speaker C:Yeah, I should say they didn't have the. The creative team to support them.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker C:You know what I mean? Like to support Heenan and mean Jean. So they work like.
Speaker B:No. Yeah. All right.
Speaker C:I know you're saying all the time like the Mongolian mauler.
Speaker B:Well, there was stuff good around them.
Speaker C:Oh, yeah, that's right. We're just seeing the.
Speaker B:Yeah, we're seeing the.
Speaker C:Oh, yeah.
Speaker B:Nice counter move there from Steve Austin. Big Patrick down for a one count. How lame. And those tight. Stunning Steve defeated the natural Dustin. How I would love a wrestling figure to have those types though my action figures. Be another version of the stunning Steve I could get. Oh, I meant to send you. I. I got another stunning Steve in the wild, as they say at Walmart. There's a new one out there.
Speaker C:Oh, what you get?
Speaker B:Oh, actually it's not something Steve. Sorry, it's ringmaster. A new ringmaster came out.
Speaker C:Liar.
Speaker B:No, it's the second ring master.
Speaker C:No, I'm joking.
Speaker B:I got it. I wanted to buy two because I wanted to open one up.
Speaker C:Oh, I thought you opened them all.
Speaker B:No, I keep it in the box.
Speaker C:Oh, I always thought you opened up all your toys.
Speaker B:Some of them I do, but generally I like them. I like the packaging.
Speaker C:Yeah, I think. I mean, I. I wouldn't open them like Pops and I have. I don't open.
Speaker B:Yeah, the packaging is part of what I like about the product. So. Yeah, I'm not going to play with it. So it's. I like how some of them are package.
Speaker C:I don't have a lot though, so it's easy for me to just.
Speaker B:You know what I mean? Yeah.
Speaker C:You have a lot of figures. That's got to take up space quick. That was a heck of a move though by Muda.
Speaker B:Yeah, that was a great drop kick. I'll drag take down into a headlock. Sonic. Steve, you know, this right here is a prime example of Austin being a great wrestler. That's what's great about this match. You know, if people who only knew Stone cold Steve Austin like give me a match where you can see Steve Austin not just be the brawler on a like pay per view level match right here. Gets a great mood. And Colonel Parker is barely involved in this, which is great. Word. Not that there's anything wrong with him, but it's great that he's not involved at this point. Sure he will be, but I can.
Speaker D:Imagine there are four guys. One obviously would be Cactus Jack.
Speaker A:I think he's going in two.
Speaker D:Well.
Speaker B:You need a fan. Here's my hat. It's going to be completely, completely false. And Austin doesn't know what to do with Muda.
Speaker D:Will come in on the near side. He walked halfway around the ring slowing this pace down.
Speaker B:All right, we got a lock up. Going for a cover. Oh, tries to. Yeah, he tried to. Grab those tights. Grab those shorts. What? Pants, Whatever. The. The ghee pants. Yeah, the G. I don't even. I don't know what they called. Isn't the ghee the top?
Speaker C:No, it's like the whole outfit.
Speaker D:Heck of a song.
Speaker B:Boy, can you belt one out.
Speaker C:Ghee pants.
Speaker D:As Muda claps on the hammer.
Speaker B:Jenkos. That's not what. Oh, he did what? No. How can he be pinned on his back? He's not on his back. Aaron Neville. Aaron Nevill rings doing. He's at commentary but not doing commentary. Aaron Neville did the Star Spangled Banner.
Speaker C:Who did?
Speaker B:Aaron Neville. He's sitting at ringside with Bobby Pock. No, that's Adrian N. He's like, like a country singer. Oh, needed the back. Sends great Ruda out of the ring. Now Colonel Pac is gonna pull some right.
Speaker C:Oh, there it is.
Speaker B:Choking him with his handkerchief.
Speaker C:Getting foul right.
Speaker B:Bobby hidden. He wasn't choking him. He was helping him out. He was wiping some drool off him. It also comes down from the ringside, the apron. Great. Muda just runs into the quarter post on his own. That was kind of sloppy. All right, so Rick Patrick, why do you. Nick. Rick Patrick. Nick Patrick, why do you keep telling Austin to look at his opponent like Austin is just like sticking his hand up, going to the crowd like, yeah, yeah, I'm Doing awesome. Then Nick Factory's like, hey, get back over there and wrestle your opponent. How dumb is that? When does that ever happen? What does the referee do that? Hey, keep fighting. No taunting. There's no taunting allowed. All right, so Austin's been in charge for quite a bit. And of course, I guess you can say with the help of Colonel Parker, that allowed for that. Austin's working his ass off, though.
Speaker D:How can you not be a champion and not understand the. How can you be a champion and.
Speaker B:Not understand the knee drop goes for a two count. Great. Mood is like, what the am I doing here? Very simple, Donald. Stress. Another stretch here. So don't see any talking. Which I guess that could be a thing here, right, jb? Like.
Speaker C:Yeah, because there's a language barrier, right?
Speaker B:Exactly. So how can they communicate in these spots? What are they doing? Yeah. Who's helping determine how this match goes? That would be some, like, keywords.
Speaker D:Corporation, Chicago Blackhawks. And I understand Randy Myers is here, my good buddy.
Speaker B:I guess in this situation, the ref would. The ref would have to be in charge, right, with the cues. Who knows? Maybe Muda speaks English to some extent.
Speaker D:Does he have a handful of cloth? Can't really call those tights.
Speaker B:Crowd does not seem excited at all.
Speaker C:Yes, we got the name. He just calls them cloth. Since you're not tights. With his pants, he's like, he's got his cloth.
Speaker B:They're not tight, they're not trunks. Earlier, the abdominal stretch got the cloth. Cloth.
Speaker A:That takes a lot out of you. It doesn't look that dangerous a move, but it turns your whole spine.
Speaker B:Plus it's hard on Mood. His fingers. He tape his fingers. Tony's like, let's call the match, Bobby. He didn't. No worry jokes. We're going to call the match here. Tony knows, like, it's almost over. We gotta call the match. I can't imagine.
Speaker A:I'm amazed that the people here in Chicago are cheering for a foreigner to be Sonny Steve Austin, the United States Champion.
Speaker D:People here want fair play and they haven't had it.
Speaker A:Chicago fair play. Look at the Cubs.
Speaker B:Bob is going on a run, talking about Chicago sports not being fair. But now we got action going on here. Big Mood is making a comeback and whips off into the ring. Ring ropes. Austin holds on, moves on his back. Austin goes to the second rope, drops an elbow. I like that spot. Never seen him go from the corner to the ropes. Like the Undertaker was different. That was an old school. That was like his cookout.
Speaker C:His kickouts are strong. Like he's trying to kick out Muda.
Speaker B:Yeah, yeah, good selling a good look at the champ.
Speaker D:The challenger the foot. Watch out, Colonel Parker again.
Speaker B:Turner pocket a little cheap shot. I mean, there's no end how much this man can help you.
Speaker D:Help wise.
Speaker A:You should work for Hillary Clinton.
Speaker C:The dated political reference. So funny.
Speaker B:I love the dated political references because they don't even allow from today. No, there's no political references. Well, back then always this was part of the culture now. Oh, you can't do it. Big back body drop from Buddha to stunning. Steve, that was crisp.
Speaker C:Yep, that was very nice.
Speaker B:Suplex. Nice snap suplex. Snip, snap suplex and a drop kick. I thought he was gonna go for like the three Amigos, like Eddie Guerrero though, the way he did that suplex, he could have just hooked on another one.
Speaker C:Yeah.
Speaker B:All right. Austin's getting up in the middle of the ring. Muda's at the top rope. Oh my. Mrs. A shitty drop kick. Nobody home. Oh, so Bobby's talking about the other wrestlers, the Japanese wrestlers. Oh, we got the Hollywood and Vine again. Formerly known as the Full Lock, which is Robert Fuller and his family's. He didn't make it all the way to Hollywood yet. Just up the street a bit, Rob Full is Colonel Rob Parker into the midsection.
Speaker D:He tried to put it on. Try to go for it now to the ropes. Reversal. Muda picks him up.
Speaker B:Oh, Stun gun onto Austin. Oh, oh. Colonel park is going crazy.
Speaker C:He's gonna have a heart attack. Yeah, Cyber vent and late.
Speaker B:And he should have had a heart attack at the some point. That should have been one of the things, cuz that's what he does at ringside the whole time. I mean, but yeah. What does that do though? If he has a heart attack, who cares? Oh, what a great move by Muda. What do you even call that? Let's. And at that back flying elbow drop in the corner now Muta's going for a hurricane Rana. Hurricane Ra to the center of the ring. Austin is down. Crowd is loving it. Crowd is actually experiencing something they probably never seen before at this point in 94. Parker gets on the apron. Spinning heel kick.
Speaker C:Oh, he just.
Speaker B:Raymond knocks him down. Austin runs. Austin gets tossed over the top rope. And JV, what's this?
Speaker C:This? He's gonna get DQ'd for throwing him over the top rope.
Speaker B:Yep.
Speaker C:Right?
Speaker B:Yep.
Speaker C:I mean, he tossed him.
Speaker B:Zeke.
Speaker C:He'S a bag of rice.
Speaker B:But the crowd loves it.
Speaker C:That comes off awful. It's the only thing I can think of Someone throwing.
Speaker B:Yes.
Speaker A:Stunning. Steve Austin.
Speaker B:Crowd loves it. Muda dives over the top. Fine body press onto Austin and Colonel Parker. But it's a DQ because of these stupid rules.
Speaker C:That's awful. All that build up for this match to end like that.
Speaker B:Yeah. They didn't want him to lose the title and they didn't want to make great mood to look bad.
Speaker C:So that's terrible.
Speaker B:Let's go back to a old rule that we haven't really enforced at all.
Speaker C:That's why this trash went out of business. Fucking topperable.
Speaker B:Why the would there ever be toss over the top rope rule?
Speaker C:They go from the top rope rule to luchadors. Obviously they get rid of rule. Right.
Speaker B:Say it again.
Speaker C:Like they went from a top rope rule to luchadors.
Speaker B:Yeah, right. Who just. They're always diving over the top. You can. You can dive over the top, but you can't throw anybody.
Speaker C:I don't know.
Speaker B:I guess that's the appeal, you know, when there's a rule like that, I guess that's the appeal of a battle royale. A Royal Rumble is that, oh, this is the time that you can actually throw people over the top. So this is special. I guess so. Maybe that's why it was so cool in the 80s. Oh, this is where it's legal to throw people over the top anyway. All right, So I mean, action pack match, right, jv?
Speaker C:Yeah. I mean it was. It was getting there.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker C:Like, it was like. It feel like it was starting to like Apex.
Speaker B:Yeah. That's. That's the gripe on the match, right?
Speaker C:Oh, absolutely. It's. It was too. It ended too soon and too stupidly.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker C:Do you disagree?
Speaker B:No, no. Was a quick match. It was a lot of action. But then the match ends like that.
Speaker C:That's some.
Speaker B:I was trying to see if I had anything like on. All right, so this match, it was up there as being one of the worst rated matches for a Spring Stampede. It's a. It's the second worst rated match. It's. It's just below Johnny B. Bad versus Diamond Dallas Page. Okay. I've seen many Johnny B. Bad vs diamond page matches, but most of them were in 95, so in 94. They probably both kind of not at that point yet. But Austin and Muda is right there after that. Then Sting versus Rick Rude is tied as the same. So. Huh. All right, so here's. Here's a little commentary I have on Austin vs. Muda. Based on the wrestling observer says the crowd was burned out from earlier matches. Muda was built to be sympathetic, getting baby face reactions. Austin only took control after Great Muda was tripped up by Colonel Parker. Muda used Austin's own stun gun. He had a Frankenstein off the top rope. The final notes on that is basically, you know, it's bad. Showcase showcased great Muda, but it didn't make him look very good overall. Yeah, it's just a poor finish. It's like you're gonna go to that. That's what I hate about some of these matches that are on pay per view or matches that get built up. They don't know what to do. So they're just, oh, we're gonna use a dq. So yeah, so that's the crap on that. All right, so from there, guess I'll continue on and get a couple more house show results. And that's April 28, 1994 and April 29, 1994. We're in Columbia, South Carolina and then Charlotte, North Carolina. Yeah. Ricky Steamboat defeating stunning Steve Austin in two non title matches. And they go to a 25 minute draw. So even that, that sucks too. Like a draw like, like they want Austin to be something and at this point maybe not, but they don't want to having a lose. So it's like, here's a draw, here's a dq. It's all right. So from there now I get some coverage here for the next episode of WCW Worldwide Wrestling. It's April 30, 1994 and this was taped in Orlando, Florida and taped back in February, but they had something in the works here. And this is called Dusty Roads May Mayhem Month Dream matches. So here we are at the end of April and we're setting up for this special month of dream matches, which the matches will get to in May on the next episode. But Dusty Rhodes is going to introduce us to this concept. So take a listen to this promo here from Dusty Rhodes, baby. It's about three minutes long. Take a listen and we'll be right back.
Speaker A:All right. You know, there is nothing that I have been so excited about in the history of television wrestling as May Mayhem. We have seen some thunderous excitement in May Mayhem. We have seen some dream matches. And for the first time in the history on live television and public if you will, we have the opportunity to see some of the wildest, meanest and fattest hombres in the world today. The concept of May Mayhem, four months of green matches has brought to you things you can only see in the great arenas around the world. So today it breaks, brings me to the to the crown and blow of this program. And the crown and blow of this program is to reach in this fishy bowl right here, these two little fishy bowls, and reach in there and pick the two contestants for next week's Dream Night. So without any further ado, if you will, let's get in here and see what we got first. Just like the Academy Awards. All right, one of the contestants for next week's dream match is the one and only United States heavyweight wrestling champion, Stunning Steve Austin. That's a great response. He don't need at my table either, brother. Let's see who's gonna be his opponent. Wow, I feel good on this one. We talking about two big fists of dynamite. We talking about a man that wears just a little bit of makeup. We talking about a man that shoots off fireworks in the arena. We talking about the prettiest man at wcw, the American. Well, not the Maga Beach. We talk. Talking about Johnny B. Bad. Yeah. Now let me, let me, let me cue you in on something. Johnny B. Is a great fighter. He is a former amateur boxing champion. He is a pro boxer. His match is a boxing match. Stunning Steve Austin, on the other hand, considers himself the master of the tuxedo match. Next week on Worldwide Wrestling throughout this country doing May Mayhem. Four weeks of the dream matches. We will find out will it be Johnny Batch boxing match or will it be Stunning Steve Austin's tuxedo match? Well, next week you're gonna find out. It's gonna be exciting. It's gonna be a bar butter. This is Dusty, Rosie and Mac and Green. So long, baby.
Speaker D:Promotional considerations paid for.
Speaker B:All right, so we're at the end of April and Dusty Rhodes is now holding this drawing for this big month of episodes and matches that they're gonna hold called May Mayhem. They're all dream matches because he's the American gene. So he's all cranked up. He's all. He's all ready to go. And first he's gonna do his things. He's got. He's got his two little fishy balls right here. And he first he pulls out Steve Austin stomach. Steve Austin, he pulls him out right away. And then we get fake booze from the crowd. Who the even paying attention? But we get these fake crowd booze. Stunning Steve Austin has been selected. Dusty says this is a great response. And he doesn't even eat in my table either, brother. And my thoughts, I'm. I'm not sure what that means. I like the line. I like the line because he doesn't need at my table either, brother. All right. Not sure exactly what that means, but maybe it has to do with like old school cafeteria room, like you're not cool enough to sit at my lunch table. Something like that. But it's funny from like a 50 year old man to me, that's what he's like. That's what he's at. So anyway, next, Dusty pulls out Johnny P. Bad. Oh, I feel good about this one. We talking about a man that wears a little bit of makeup. We're talking about a man that shoots off fireworks in the arena. We're talking about prettiest man in wcw. We're talking about Johnny the Bad. Yeah, yeah. So we got Johnny Be Bad versus Steve Austin. And I'm looking forward to that. I think that'd be pretty good. But Dusty says not only that, it's a dream match. The dream match. Dusty says that Johnny is a great fighter and a former amateur boxer and that Johnny Be Bad wants a boxing match. And Dusty goes on to say that Steve Austin considers himself a master of a tuxedo match. Well, well, I would have liked if Dusty said Steve Austin considers himself the master of the ring. The ring master. No. And we gotta have a wrestle against a boxer. But what the is a boxer against a tuxedo match guy? And, and when the did Austin ever have a tuxedo match? He just wore a tuxedo on one segment. One time that you covered that was it Tuxino match. Ah, where the did this come from? Oh, ridiculous. So Dusty continues next week. We'll find out if Johnny B's boxing match or if it'll be stunning Steve Austin's tuxedo match. The crowd booze as they should. Thankfully. Who the wants any of that? None of it. None of it's good. Just make it a tuxedo match. So it can just be a wrestling match. You want to put Steve Austin in boxing gloves? That would be some. So hopefully that does not happen. We'll see on next month's episode. But jv, take us home here you got the final segment. What do you got?
Speaker C:All right, so for the final segment here it's a short one and it's another interview. I got three interviews with Colonel Parker and Mean Gene involved in it, but this time it's just Colonel Parker and Mean Gene. No Stone Cold. And it's from WCW Saturday night, April 30, 1994 in Center Stage. So this one's just under two minutes. Give it a listen and we'll be right back to cover it.
Speaker D:It'S joining us here on Saturday night, the greatest promoter on the face of the planet Earth, Colonel Robert Parker. Recently making a very rare appearance north of the Mesa Dixon line up in Chicago, Illinois. Colonel, a lot of things happening for you right now. I couldn't help but notice you've got that attache case that has your ticket to riot in it.
Speaker A:You know, it certainly does. You know, I. I created myself a whole bucket full of animosity with all the success from Spring Stampede all of you. So just get your hands off of that now. I need to lock that up all of you.
Speaker B:So that.
Speaker A:Watch it. Muda Hobble is way back to Japan after Olson took care of him. And that puppet road's going right along with him because Buck beat him right there clear for everybody to see.
Speaker D:You know, the way I see it, Stunning Steve Austin is state's champ.
Speaker A:Well, the way you see it don't matter. Stunning Steve is a United States champ. What I want to know is how WCW figured that they're going to be able to force All Stars Austin into putting up the United States title next week here against Dustin Rhodes. Rhodes, you got something up your sleeve and it's gonna cost you. You don't have to worry about no bull rope match with Buck. Cause that's out of the question. But as far as next week and Austin goes, that's in the question. And you're gonna pay son, dearly. Right, here's my ticket to ride. And I'm gonna going to be hunting for you, Ric Flair or Steamboat, whichever one it might be right here.
Speaker D:All right, I thank you very much, Colonel Robert Parker. By the way, ladies and gentlemen, I'm going to have an announcement regarding that bull rope match. A possible bull rope match between Bunk House Buck and the Natural Dustin Rhodes later on in the Slamber Control Center. Right now let's get up to the ring. And more action. Ladies and gentlemen, the following contest is.
Speaker C:All right, so Mean Gene is conducting the interview obviously and he's with Colonel Rob Parker who said he was not happy that WCW US Champion Steve Austin is being forced to defend his title next week against Dustin Rhodes. However, Colonel Parker says he still has a ticket to ride contained inside his briefcase that would be used against either flare or Steamboat for a world title shot. So this is basically like a Money in the bank briefcase contract before it existed.
Speaker B:Yeah, like that's what he was saying is like I got the gold in here. And you know, we were alluding to the fact that, you know, because that those promos were recorded Way long ago, you know, we were hinting to us like, oh, they changed the storyline. They still probably did, but now it's become something different now. Now there's this ticket to ride, like we assumed it was. You had a title shot. I mean, maybe even this could be considered a title shot. You got the ticket to ride, whatever. But yeah, so ultimately it's a title shot. And like you said, jv, it's a money in a bank shot, essentially. Mm, pretty cool. Who knows if they even continue on with this in May though. They're probably just throw it out the window.
Speaker C:Feel like some fucker he's gonna happen here. Some kind of shenanigans.
Speaker B:Yeah. So see who has the ticket to ride any of them. All right, so jv, you wrap that up? You all set? That.
Speaker C:Yeah, I have nothing else for that one. That's it. That was a quick one.
Speaker B:All right, so you know, that covers April of 1994, which, you know, was a. I think it was a big turning point in wcw, at least from what I recall. You know, this was when Hogan came in. Late March, early April. Hogan came in. He's not officially there yet, but he's, he's had promos and segments and the whole attitude of watching WCW change. So I think a lot of people tuned into the Spring Stampede pay per view, you know, just because of the hype. Yeah, they heard and they were probably disappointed because Hogan wasn't there. But you know, it's coming. And this pay per view spring span, Spring Stampede itself has been considered a pretty good one overall. Now, we didn't get into the whole card and we won't, but it, it was a pretty good pay per view if you watch it through and through, you know. But Steve Austin, you know, we're getting to that point, jv, it's just falling apart for him. It's just, yeah, like, it's because of Hogan, you know, and it makes sense why he cuts those promos against Hulk Hogan later in ecw, about a year later, how he feels like he got.
Speaker C:Yeah. Took all his progress.
Speaker B:Yeah. And I bet many other wrestlers felt that way. And it's fine for many people to feel that way, but when you're somebody that is actually a top tier potential star and they take that away from you again, like they stripped them of that with like, oh, now you're gonna be with Brian Pillman and his tag team. Now we're going to take you away from Brian Pillman in this tag team and then you're going to start all over Again. Now you start to rise again. Oh, we got Hulk Hogan. So you again. Like, he keeps getting over and over again, like, while he keeps doing great work, keeps shining, like every. Every single time he does what they want and exceeds. Oh, no, we can't do that for you. Never mind. Change of plans. It only. Yeah, it just shows, like, how frustrated he got and it led to him creating the best character in wrestling history. And it. I kind of like how Hulk Hogan fueled that because him, like, people need people. Yeah, somebody like Austin needed that. Like, oh, he's this guy lit a fire under his ass just to that point where it's like, I keep doing what I'm supposed to do and I'm getting screwed. Now just the one other side note with that is I wanted to say is that there can be many other wrestlers that think like, oh, I got screwed by Hulk Hogan coming in. But not everybody was at that level of Austin. Like, it's easy to be the guy that's like, oh, I might have got a TV title shot, but Hulk Hogan came in. You know what I mean? Yeah, Steve Austin has a rifle gripe about him being screwed, but he didn't let that screw him. He continued on. Whereas some other people might like, ah, yeah, Hogan came in and that ruined my whole thing. No, not the case. All right, so enough of that. Move on now to I'll wrap up here and we're gonna come back in a month for May of 1994. And you know, May is slimbery. So we'll see what's in store for Sam Bury and what's going on with stunning Steve Austin.
