Stunning Steve: E25 - Parker's Promise: June '94
Episode 25 - Special Series - Stunning Steve

Transcript
How stupid are you guys? All you people out there in TV land, you just make me sick. We told the world what we were gonna do and we went out and did it. The wrestler who will dominate the sport like no other wrestler can. WCW has tried way too long to try to hold me back. The whole facade, who cares? No one cares. No one can beat.
Speaker B:Welcome to the Bottom Line Wrestling cast the career of Stone Cold Steve Austin. And we are back with another episode of Stunning Steve. It is episode 25, Parker's Promise. Covering June 1994. I'm Mike Prue along with JV. As always, JV, welcome back. How you doing?
Speaker C:Doing well. How about you, bro?
Speaker B:Good man. New school year, September. It's almost fall football season. Best time of year in my opinion.
Speaker C:Oh, yeah, it's Sunday. It's Sunday. Right now, as you record this, we have a full slate of football.
Speaker B:Seven uninterrupted hours. Right. Whatever it is. Used to be the red zone. Yeah. Now it's gonna be ads all over the place probably.
Speaker C:It's gonna be very annoying. It's gonna be more. Spend more time on my phone, I guess.
Speaker B:Yeah, I mean, I plan to just watch the Patriots game and just keep it on that channel probably. Maybe I'll flip back and forth, but I'm gonna watch the broadcast of the Patriots game against the Raiders. I mean, I'm thinking this will be the game that they win and be like all hyped up and then they'll lose like the next four.
Speaker C:Yeah, they should win today. The Raiders are pre.
Speaker B:Yeah, they should. They're favored, right? To win.
Speaker C:Pats are favored.
Speaker B:Yeah. Yeah. So hopefully they just get that one out of the way and they got the. They all going feud now with Bill Belichick. Yeah, Belichick's like, you're not coming. Coming here. If I can't go there, what is this? All right, anyway, so we have Stunning Steve to cover. And also one little other side note here, kind of a big deal, I guess. You know, this is about our seven year anniversary episode. So we started back in September. September of 2018. Seven years have gone by. We've covered the entire career of Stone Cold Steve Austin. And, you know, we've kind of winded down and basically wrapped up the heart of the podcast. But we kept on doing the extra series with the Hollywood Blondes and here we are with Stunning Steve. So, you know, while it's not what the podcast was, you know, back when we were in the heart of it, we're banging out episodes every week. Remember that how the do we even do that now? It's like, how do we even do it? Right. Different time, you know. Right. Everything's changed over time. But yeah, we're, we're happy. It's been seven years and you know, we're, we got some more, you know, there's some more of Stunning Steve. Not much. And you'll be able to tell by how we cover this episode and the things that come up on this episode, how things are really continuing to change for Stunning Steve's position in WCW with June of 94. So not only are we covering Stunning Steve, but we're also be touching in on, you know, the big development of Hulk Hogan coming into WCW in June of 94. Hogan, Zeus. Anyway, so that's what we'll be touching on today for this seven year anniversary episode, Parker's Promise. Which is I. I like the title. It was catchy and AI helped me create that title.
Speaker C:Really?
Speaker B:Yeah. I had the notes in. I used Notebook lm. So you just put like a document in and then like read all the notes. So I asked it, I was like, based on the information here, what would be some good subtitles for this episod promise? I was like, oh, that's a catchy one. I like that.
Speaker C:Yeah, I like that one. Alliteration always works, right? It's alliteration.
Speaker B:Yeah. Yep. It's ironic because Parker makes a promise, but he seemingly doesn't keep it in this episode. All right, so before we get into the episode, please give us a follow on X or all the social media, like Instagram too, at bottom line. Cast, Follow me. Mike Prue at NPRU 83 All JV @ John Van Damage. And yeah, that's it. We're just picking up where we left off last last time, which was covering May of 94 and the ongoing feud that Austin has with Johnny B. Bad. So that will continue into June of 94 as well. So Austin is still the US champion. So there is that. So he does have that. But you know, that's starting to mean not much.
Speaker C:Yeah, they really, really like diminishing the value of the thing.
Speaker B:Right.
Speaker C:It's pretty, pretty sad to see.
Speaker B:Yeah. And you'll see in the matches that we cover that it's like he's the US Champion. What the. What the hell's he doing?
Speaker C:Could have fooled me, right? All right, what's the other big belt right now? Television title.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker C:Heavyweight title.
Speaker B:Right?
Speaker C:Is that it for single, right?
Speaker B:Yeah. U.S. tV and the heavyweight, huh? Yeah. And the TV is Lord Steven Regal. I Believe it's Lord Steven Regal because.
Speaker C:The US spot was like their version of like the Intercontinental belt.
Speaker B:Right?
Speaker C:That was. All right, you're next. The. Your next belt.
Speaker B:Yep. And the TV title was, I mean there was no comparison to it in wwf was basically like, it's the one that's going to be defended on TV more often than any.
Speaker C:Which I always loved that, that concept.
Speaker B:That's cool. There should be something like that, like, because it makes people interested in oh, who the TV champion is for this episode. You know, instead of just like on the house shows or whatever on pay per views, like, you know, there's going to be something special just on WWE Saturday night. At least the TV title will probably be there. Yeah, that's pretty cool. All right, so I'm gonna start the coverage first and we're gonna go to WCW Worldwide. June 4, 1994 is taped in May. May 13, 1994. So not too long ago. It's not like some other things where it's like three months old. But here we are at Disney MGM Studios. And for us, we're going to start off right away with an audio clip of Mean Gene with Stunning Steve. So take a listen. It's about two minutes and we'll be right back.
Speaker D:All right, fans, coast to coast and live free on national TV. The clash of the championship. Thursday, June 23, 8:05pm Eastern time. We want you though, to check your local listings for time and station. What a night. It's going to be in Charleston, South Carolina for the first time ever in the history of World Championship Wrestling. The unification of the international title and the World Heavyweight Championship. Sting meets the nature boy, Ric Flair. Out of this one. World Heavyweight Champion. There is another title, however, that will be on the line. Come on in. United States Heavyweight Champion Stunning Steve Austin. A man that has really been cutting quite a swat through the WCW as of late. You're going to be facing a red hot challenger in Johnny B. Bad. And I recall what happened at Slamboree when the two of you met at a previous match.
Speaker A:Johnny B. Bad is red hot. But before we get on to Johnny B. Bad, let's go back to what you just said. Unification of the World Championship. That means Ric Flair. That means Sting cannot duck me anymore. One of them can run from me. Yes, but I will catch that man who unifies the title. And when I catch him, I'll make good my word right now that I will be the next World Heavyweight Champion. Now going on back. Now just wait there. I'm talking right now. Getting back to Johnny B. Badd at Slamboree. Johnny, I gave you a shot to be somebody in the sport of professional wrestling. Yes, I did. I wrestled you. What happens after the match, after I beat you? Right in the middle of my victory celebration. Wham. You nailed me right out of the blue for no apparent reason other than jealousy. Johnny. Well, at the Clash of the Champions, I'm telling you here right now, I'm not gonna wrestle you. I'm gonna come to that ring and I'm gonna beat you like a dog that's just stained the living room carpet. I'm gonna rub your face in that mat and I'm gonna beat you and I'm gonna grind you and I'm gonna punish you. And you're gonna realize what?
Speaker D:Why I'm the US Champ for no apparent reason.
Speaker A:That's right.
Speaker B:No, not.
Speaker D:Please give me a break. Stay tuned. We're back after this.
Speaker B:All right, so Mean Jeans hyping Clash of the Champions here. He says it's coming up on Thursday, June 23rd at 805 Live on TBS in Charleston, South Carolina. Gene spotlights the unification match between Ric Flair and Sting. So they're combining the International Heavyweight Championship, which is the big gold belt, and the WCW Championship. They're combining those into one championship, you know, just in time for Hulk Hogan to come and take it.
Speaker C:Of course. Yeah. Bet that was in his demands, brother. We can't have two titles.
Speaker B:There's another champion. Then what the hell am I? Well, G turns his attention to another title match, says the US Championship match. And he calls on in stunning Steve, come on in here. And Gene mentions that Austin will be defending against Johnny Be Bad. But Austin briefly mentions that Johnny Be Bad is red hot. But Austin wants to turn the attention back to the unification championship match. Austin doesn't want to talk about Johnny Be Bad. He wants to talk about the big belt. Says the unification of the championship means that Ric Flair and Sting cannot duck me anymore. One of them can run for me. Yes. But I will catch that man who unifies the title. And when I catch him, I'll make my word. Good. Good of my word right now. I will be the next World Heavyweight Champion. And you hear that in the opening of our show. I will be the next World Heavyweight Champ. We know that is not true. But he, he's. He's going for it. And that might have been the plan at the time of this recording, but, you know, planes changed awful quick. Austin tells Gene that he's talking right now, and he turns his Attention back to Johnny B. Bad. He says, at slamboree, I gave you a shot to be somebody in the sport of professional wrestling. I wrestled you. And what happens after the match after I beat you? Right in the middle of my victory celebration, Wham. You nailed me right? Right out of the blue, out of no apparent reason other than jealousy. Johnny. Well, the clash of champions. I'm telling you right now, I'm not going to wrestle you. I'm going to go to that ring and I'm going to beat you like a dog that just stained the living room carpet. I'm going to rub your face in the mat. I'm going to beat you and I'm going to grind you and I'm going to punish you. And you're going to realize why I'm the US Champ. And then smart alec Jean says, for no apparent reason. Not like he's Bill and Ted or something. Nah, please give me a break. So mean Gene has to get his last word in there. Of course, no apparent reason. Well, I guess Johnny B. Bad did have reason because Austin pulled tights to get the win. But yeah, Johnny bed nailed him. After the match saw loser little. Yeah, all right. And that's all there is from Worldwide and then jv. Jv, we covered WCW Saturday night from that same night. So what do you got? JV.
Speaker C:All right, so WCW Saturday, June 4, 1994. Taped way back on May 2. And I was actually pumped to see that I got the opportunity to cover this match. So we got the US Championship match and it's stunning. Steve Austin versus Marcus Alexander Bagwell. And as a kid, I remember thinking Bagwell was going to be like the next big, big thing in wrestling. Like he was like the young up and coming prospect for the wcw. It felt like he had like charisma. It looks kind of looked apart. Yeah, eventually we know he comes, you know, he's kind of gains famous, you know, buff Bagwell with his ridiculous hats and stuff. So early days here. So Austin comes out and his vest is awesome. It's awesome. And he's with Colonel Parker and Meng. Start of the match, you got Bagwell and Austin in the middle. Bagwell offers to shake Austin's hand and Austin just kind of slaps it away. A little bit of disrespect. And Bagwell responds by taunting Austin by gyrating his hips with his hands in the air and just kind of really egging Austin on. The women are loving it as he's doing it. Of course. We actually cut to a woman in the crowd and she's holding a box of kfc. As the crowd taunts Colonel Parker, Bobby Heenan on commentary points out that Meng is along for the match tonight, which gives Austin more confidence. You know, Ming's kind of like that silent assassin just, you know, looking from the outside. The entire match. Match kicks off. Bagwell frustrates Austin as he flees back to Parker. And Parker kind of, you know, airs him off with his hat and stuff, you know, break the sweat. Austin attempts to shake Bagwell's hand now. So now Austin's like, I'll shake your hand. And Bagwell kind of returns the favor by slapping it away, similar to what Austin did at the start of the match. Bagwell then takes control with a headlock and then multiple takeovers for a solid two to three minutes, which was actually very lame, which I seem like that's, like, a thing in Austin matches now. I think I said this last episode, but they always start off, like, very boring. Like, they're not doing anything to help him, like, at all.
Speaker B:Right.
Speaker C:I'm the booker is. But it's bad.
Speaker B:Yeah. And it's more of what we've seen with Bagwell. That used to be the joke on earlier stunning Steve episodes when Austin and Bagwell had matches. You know, the hips, like, drop, whatever. You know, the Burger King commercial.
Speaker C:Yeah.
Speaker B:Hip toss. Hip does. Yeah, yeah.
Speaker C:Hip toss. Hip toss.
Speaker B:Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker C:Bagwell has not approved. Improved much at all.
Speaker B:No.
Speaker C:Austin finally turns the. So basically, Bagwell's in full control this match, and he kind of looks like he's outclassing Austin, which, to the point we said earlier in the show, they're just kind of showing that the US Title is A, kind of feels not important, and B, they don't really care about Austin anymore. Austin finally turns the tide with a big kick to Bagwell's midsection. Then he kind of follows up with a few more, then an uppercut that kind of hits the top of Bagwell's head. A little awkward there. Crowd starts chanting for Bagwell, but Austin retains control with the knee to Bagwell's back. So he's on top of him, and he's just kind of driving his knee into Bagwell's back, and, you know, Bagwell's kind of at his mercy. Then Austin bounces off the ropes and then hits a driving knee, and then followed by a big back elbow to Bagwell. Austin then taunts the crowd by putting his finger in the air, like, look at me, look at me. I'm number one. Bagwell starts to fight back But Austin cancels. You know, a failed sunset flip. Austin gets the Hollywood and Vine, but Bagwell kicks out. But I think what actually happened is Austin fucked it up. The more I see this move, the more I realize how, like, dumb it is. It's a terrible move. I don't think this was planned. I don't think Bagwell was supposed to kick out. I could be wrong. Austin attempts at a second time and Bagwell actually kicks out of it this time. So it was either the move was wrong or the kick out was bad the first time. But this time Bagwell. I guess the plan was to kick out of it.
Speaker B:Yes. Something must have fucked up because this is supposed to be his finishing move. Like, why is he getting out of it like that so easily?
Speaker C:And you can understand, like one fuck up, one kick out, but back to back, like, what are we doing? Oh, they just really hate Austin.
Speaker B:Yeah, that could be part of it. Like, screw you. Your finisher doesn't even work that well anymore.
Speaker C:Yeah, like, terrible. So then Austin attempts it a third time. But count. But Bagwell counters and hits a big back body drop on Austin. Bagwell then heads to the top rope for I think, what is this? A flying drop kick. It just kind of comes off sloppy. Austin dodges it and then gets Bagwell for the pin, using Bagwell's tights as leverage. So another not clean win for Austin, which is fine as a heel, but.
Speaker B:Right. Still, he's the champion. He's. He has to cheat to beat Bagwell.
Speaker C:Bagwell who's like at this point, what, enhancement talent?
Speaker B:Yeah, like.
Speaker C:Like almost.
Speaker B:Right, right. He's at the. Yeah, he's at the lower of the regular talent. Yeah, and almost the top jobber.
Speaker C:So it was a very shitty ending. Not really a good match at all. You can clearly tell Austin is falling out of favor. And it's probably, you know, manufactured backstage. You know, as we've talked about, we kind of know what's going on here. Heenan, the heel announcer basically just says, like, so what? When Austin won, which was weird, but I think he had. I think he was acting weird because of like another segment that was coming because he just kind of like leaves right after the match.
Speaker B:Yeah, Bobby's all worked up about Hulk Hogan shit right now.
Speaker C:Okay, all right, all right, that makes sense. So, yeah, that sums up that match. And then after that match, we cut to a post match interview with Mean Gene, Stunning, Steve Austin, Colonel Parker and Meng. So we're gonna let you listen to that. That's about two minutes long. So Give that a listen and we'll be right back.
Speaker B:Means in Oakland, o' brain.
Speaker D:All right, fans, with me at this time is the bodyguard Ming, along with United States heavyweight champion Stunning Steve Austin. And the greatest promoter on the face of The Planet Earth, Colonel Robert Parker @ the Clash of the Champions in Charleston, South Carolina. It's going to be Johnny B. Bad meeting up with your man Steve Austin.
Speaker A:Well, you're right about that. And you're right about the greatest promoter of all time too. You know, it's the greatest show of all the classes. And don't worry about me. It's the greatest show of all. And standing next to you is the greatest star of all. Campaigning all over the world already. And already this belt is the most prestigious belt in the world because of it. Got it? Me, man, I think we going to change that to John. All right.
Speaker D:At that clash of Champions for you, Stunning Steve.
Speaker A:Everybody in WCW wants a piece of Stunning Steve Austin and the United States title. When I am the number one contender, how come I'm not getting shots at the world title? That's what I want to know. And you know who is the man that stuck in me? Johnny B. Man, let me tell you something, kid. You're good at a lot of things and you progress better than anybody in the sport in recent memory. No doubt about it. I told you once, and I'll tell you again. You can come over and mow my lawn, you can come over and wax my car. But if you come looking for the United States title, Johnny, it's gonna be a real sad day to be a bad man. Because the United States heavyweight champion is the hottest wrestler in the world today.
Speaker D:All right, ladies and gentlemen, live and prime time here on TBS, the 23rd of June, live at 8:05pm for Maine, the USWA champ. For Colonel Parker, Bobby Heenan, and of course for Tony Schiavone. G said, we'll see you back here tomorrow night on the main event. So long, everybody.
Speaker C:All right. So Mean Gene, he's with the the trio here. And he refers to Parker as, you know, commonly coined now it seems, among other, between Gene and Shoney Schiavone and stuff. As the greatest promoter on the face of the earth. Parker tells Gene that he's right about him being the greatest promoter of all time. And Parker calls the Clash of Champions the greatest show of all. And not to worry about Colonel Parker, that standing next to Mean Gene is the greatest star of all. Campaigning all over the world in the building is the greatest of all. And that building is the greatest of all because Austin is in it. So Austin's presence just, you know, brings greatness with him. Parker said, they're going to change Johnny B. Bad's name from Johnny B. Bad to Johnny B. Had. Corny.
Speaker B:More of that. Always changing the name. Gonna be Bad Johnny Be Sad. Johnny B. Had.
Speaker C:Gene turns to Austin for his thoughts. And Austin really kind of kicks it up here. Austin says everyone wants a piece of me for my United States title, when in fact I'm the number one contender for the world heavyweight title. Heavyweight title. And he wants to know why he's not getting his shit, his shot from the man who was ducking him. Austin says Johnny B. Bad is good at a lot of things and he's progressed better than anybody in the sport in recent memory. You know, great little rub there from Austin to Johnny B. Bad.
Speaker B:Yeah, he seems to do that in almost every interview. He keeps saying that Johnny B. Bad is awesome.
Speaker C:I mean, we see it like, the guy's a hell of an ass.
Speaker B:Oh, yeah, sure.
Speaker C:Austin says he can come over and mow my lawn and wax my car, but if you come looking for the title, it's going to be a real sad day to be a bad man. Because the US Champion is the hottest wrestler in the world today. Mean Gene reminds people of the date and time of Clash of the Champions. And that's the end of that. I thought it was a great promo from Austin. As you just heard. The emotion was like real. I'm like, maybe he's starting to feel. He's starting to show that frustration that he's experiencing backstage. Because I don't know, I just felt like this one, he really stepped it up.
Speaker B:Yeah, no, I. I felt the same way with the promo that I covered. When he's saying, I'm gonna rub your face in the mat like a dog that, you know, stain the carpet like. Yeah. His promos again, kind of, kind of like on point and he's bringing out more of that character that we would eventually see him be.
Speaker C:Yep.
Speaker B:Yeah. In the years to come. And yeah, you're probably right. It probably is the frustration or he's like, screw it, I'm gonna go out there and I got to do my own thing now because nobody's got my back, basically.
Speaker C:Yeah. If you want something done right, do it yourself.
Speaker B:Right, right. Just go for it. Alright, so what I'm gonna do, what we, you know, we hadn't done in a while, but because there's so much big stuff going on in wcw, I'm gonna Give some side notes. We used to do that with the older episodes with recovering Raw and whatnot. So I'm just going to go through and cover some of the things that were happening on that episode of Saturday night from June 4, 1994. And the first thing is in regards to the unification yet President Nick Bockwinkle come out. He announces that Sting and Ric Flair will have their match at the Clash of Champions 27 on June 23rd to unify the titles. Two world titles. Bobby Heenan says that, you know, what are we thinking? So now, now they're going to unify the titles. Now that Hulk Hogan arrives, you tell me, something doesn't smell funny here. So I. I love that little bit because I love how Bobby just calls it out and says what a lot of people are probably thinking. A lot of people that like, people that are watching wrestling that know Hogan and like, oh, he's just coming here to win the world title. And Bobby Heenan's like, spot on with it and just says it because people are thinking it for sure. So, you know, and it continues with, you know, Bobby Heenan and Hogan's feud that was in wwf. So he didn't like converting right back to that, like being totally against Hogan immediately. And yeah, so interesting there. Larry Sibisco on this episode defeated Lord Steven Regal for the TV title. So we were just talking about that earlier, the TV title being on, on the show. And yeah, here it was defended by Regal and Larry Zabisco, who's basically already retired for the most part, he hadn't wrestled much the past couple of years, and he wins the TV title from Regal. As we'll see, it's not for very long. Sensational Sherry is now in wcw. She announces that she has found her next man. She had been coming out to the ring for different matches, like usually Brian Pillman matches, leading people to think that that's gonna be her next guy that she's gonna manage. But she says she'll reveal who she's gonna manage at the Clash of Champions. During a Ricky Steamboat match. There is a ticker that goes across the bottom screen like you're watching a news program, you're watching ESPN or something. And this was new. This had never happened on before. But then, you know, randomly it shows up here. Like it's a normal thing. Like it's been something they've been doing now, if they were gonna plan, have done it, like in the weeks leading to it. So it seemed like a new thing. So then when there was this breaking news, it'd be like, oh, now that's really big.
Speaker C:Breaking news.
Speaker B:But the bulletin goes across and it reads, Hulk Hogan has signed with World Championship Wrestling. The former five time WWF Champion agrees to return to the ring, this time with wcw due to the overwhelming response received on the WWE Wrestling hotline. More details to follow. And Bobby Heenan, he's pissed off when he sees this and he says he's out of there. He gets up, he leaves, he storms off. And I think that's, you know, when jv, you were covered in your match. Why he was so frustrated is that this already came up. So now he's all. He's all ripped that Hogan's coming in for officially. There is another bulletin that comes a little later in the match. Says the official press conference announcing Hulk Hogan signing with WCW will broadcast live next week on WWE Saturday night on TBS at 6:05pm it's funny. They're like on TBS. We're watching TBS. That's. That's what we're watching. It's on there. All right. So anyway, Tony mentioned that this might be a nightmare for Bobby Heenan and even Ric Flair. So they're setting that feud in motion already. You know, Bobby Heenan being upset with Hogan, Ric Flair. So they're already building that. And they're already building that flare. He basically has to turn heel. So. And that's kind of gradually been happening is that we're starting to see more of the Heelish Flair, even though he's the baby face still. But that's all going to turn immediately once he sees that Hogan's coming. Mean Gene does interview Ric Flair on this episode. Flair is pissed that Gene said that. Today is the biggest day in the history of wcw and it very met well may have been the biggest day in WCW history. Because if not for Hogan, you know that I don't know what that company would have been doing in the following years. So that is a huge day.
Speaker C:Probably not much.
Speaker B:Yeah, right. Probably won't even last much longer. Luckily, WWF kind of sucked at the same time. So they just would have both sucked together. But it really did change everything because Hogan comes in and then Austin is out. And all the, all the people that didn't have the opportunity to now rise in WCW had to go somewhere else. And that led to WWF getting all those guys. Yeah.
Speaker C:And actually helped the industry overall.
Speaker B:Right. So Hogan coming in, it does really keep things going. Especially when he turns heel, of course in the nwo.
Speaker C:Oh yeah.
Speaker B:Yeah. They're all right. So the unification is the big Deal. Obviously, flare is now in heal mode. And boom, just like that, he's already healed now. Yeah. You also get new tag team champions on this episode. So this is a freaking big time episode. You got two title changes, actually. Yeah. You got the new title. Tag team champions. Kevin Sullivan, Cactus Jack. Larry Zabisco wins the title. Kevin Sullivan, Cactus Jack in his promo there, they're like a reluctant tag team. They don't get along, but they're the tag team champions. And Sullivan slapping Cactus Jack in the face.
Speaker C:I remember this.
Speaker B:Yeah. And they had wild. Yeah, they. And they like when they're in a match together, they're like fighting each other. And so it's pretty cool, that angle. And then also at the same time, within this angle, you have Dave Sullivan, who's Kevin Sullivan's, you know, brother, who, who loves Hulk Hogan. And Hulk Hogan's coming in, so they. Kevin Sullivan's always getting pissed off at his brother for dressing up like Hulk Hogan. And so some wild stuff there. Also you have big boss man who, who can no longer be the boss in wcw. So they have his training video package of becoming a guardian angel in the streets of New York and on the subways and they have that going on. So Guardian angel is about to debut and you know, you had the big main event match that JV covered Austin and Bagwell and. Yeah, so a great, great show. And all that was in one hour. Just one hour. Boom. They crammed it all in and that was perfect. One hour TV. The Braves were playing a game later at 7:05, so they had to just, you know, cut it short. And they jam packed that episode. You know, just a little side note with the Braves game, I had to look it up. They won 4 to 2. This was a good season for them. But then it was also the, the strike season, so, you know, couldn't play out that season. But Smoltz went 8 innings, 9 Ks, no walks in that game. John Swoltz, the man, one of the greatest starters, one of the greatest relief pitches.
Speaker C:Both. Yeah, just one of the greatest overall pitches of all time.
Speaker B:Yep. All right, so that now leads me into the next week with June 11, 1994, another episode of Worldwide Tape. The same day as the last one, May 13, 1994. And we start off with another interview with Mean Gene. But this time he's going to interview Johnny B. Bad. So we're going to take a listen to that. It's about two minutes long and we'll be right back.
Speaker D:Fans, don't forget this weekend the big Press conference from Orlando. I'm gonna be at Disney MGM with Hulk Hogan. And I expect a very important announcement coming from the Immortal Hulk Hogan this weekend. Of course, right here. We will keep you apprised of any new news. The big one coming up at the Clash of the Champions on Thursday night, June 23rd. Check your local listings for 20 time and station. @ the Clash, of course, the big announcement of the unification of the international title and the WCW Heavyweight Championship. Sting and Ric Flair are going to be going at it one on one. In addition, there are a number of other very exciting matches. One of them involves a title defense for United States Heavyweight champ Stunning Steve Austin. In his corner corner turn, Colonel Parker. I'm getting confused on this one, Johnny. Colonel Parker and Ming. And you're going to be challenging him. Last time at Slamboree, you knocked him silly like Wild Willie.
Speaker A:I'll tell you, Gene, you're looking at the US uncrowned champion right now. And come June 23, the clash of Champions, it's all going to be changed. Because Johnny Big Bad has been training differently for this match. Because now I'm prepared for that outside interference by Colonel Robert Parker. And if he sticks his nose in my business and cost me me the title, I am gonna kick his booty with my tutor, Fruity Gene. You know what I mean?
Speaker D:I know exactly what you mean, Johnny Be Bad. At the risk of sounding negative, let's give the devil his due. Stunning Steve Austin is a very good athlete. Plus, in his arsenal, he has that devastating Hollywood invite. It's been so successful for him.
Speaker A:Gene, I agree with you. I've been watching the tapes. And Johnny Bad has a counter for the Hollywood and Vine. And come to June 23, the clash of Champions. The whole world is going to see it. And going to see the new US Heavyweight Champ.
Speaker D:A counter for the Hollywood. And Fine. That should be interesting. Johnny B Fad is going to be challenging United States Heavyweight champ Stoney Steve Austin at the Clash of the Champions live and free on national tv.
Speaker B:All right. So Mean Gene is with Johnny Be Bad. He mentions that this week he'll be with Hulk Hogan at MGM for the signing of Hulk Hogan's contract and Mean Jean's hype in Clash of Champions. And like I said, he brings out Johnny B. Bad to talk about the US Championship match. Mean Gene says that at Slamboree, Johnny knock Stunning Steve silly like wow Willie. That sounds like something Johnny B. Bad would say. But it's Mean Gene saying it. You knocked him silly like wow, Willie. Anyway, Johnny says That Gene is looking for the US Un. He's looking at the US Uncrowned Champion. As Johnny believes that he should be the champion at this point. And come June 23rd, that will all change because he's training differently for this match. Johnny says that he's prepared for the outside interference from Colonel Parker. Johnny warns Parker that if he sticks his nose in his business and cost him the title again and Johnny will kick his booty with my tutor Fruity.
Speaker C:If I had to guess the rest of those lines, I would have guessed that correctly.
Speaker B:Definitely no me. Gene says that he will give the devil his due. Gene admits that Austin is a great athlete and in his arsenal. He has the Hollywood and Vine submission hold. And Johnny says that he's been watching the tapes and has a counter for the Hollywood and Vine. Then at the Clash, the whole world is going to see it. Then Gene wraps it up a counter for the Hollywood and Vine. That should be interesting. And that this just brings us right back to what JV covered. Yeah, real interesting. We just saw a Marcus Bagwell counter it three times in the last match. So is that what Johnny means? He's been watching tape. Is he watched WWE Saturday night from last week? That's it. Oh, I saw Dagwell counter it. Oh, I got this counter and everyone's gonna see it at the Clash. It's like we just saw it last week and it was stupid. So I don't know if that was supposed to tie into it. It's like, oh, someone figured out the counter. And Johnny B. Bad was watching tapes. Now he knows the counter, whatever. So he's acting like he's come up with this counter and he's gonna reveal it at the Clash. But we know if you just watch the tv. You saw Bagwell do it last week. Anyway, we get to the main event match on WCW Worldwide and stunning Steve Austin is in action in a non title match. Which is fine, I guess. You know, sometimes I criticize that. Oh, non title match. But it makes sense because if he already has a US Championship match booked for an event coming up, then it would make sense that any match leading to that, you know, should be a non title match. It's kind of just like an exhibition leading up to his title match. And Terry Taylor doesn't get a title shot because Johnny B. Bad currently has the title shot. Now if Terry Taylor beats Austin, then maybe Terry Taylor gets a title shot against Austin next or something, you know, so that's fine. That's cool me how that works out. It also you Know, makes it seem like legitimate fighting when you. When you have the non title match when there already is one planned. All right, so anyway, we get Terry Taylor. He makes his entrance. He's coming out through this fake building on New York street at MGM studios. And again, like I said previously, I like this outdoor look. It's cool here because it's. It's nighttime and it just gives a cool little look to the, to the show. It's different than WCW Saturday Night. And it doesn't look as cheap as Worldwide used to look. I mean, this looks kind of cheap and corny, I guess, but irrelative. It's improvement, right? Exactly. Stomach. Steve makes his entrance and he comes out of the fake hotel. That's funny. They. They come out of different buildings. That's. That's cool. But because he's the champion, he comes out of the classy hotel and he's.
Speaker C:Making more money, right?
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker C:In status brings more money, right.
Speaker B:And he's. He's coming down there with Colonel Parker and Meng and Austin mugs the camera and says, I'm also available for commercials, modeling jobs and any movie scripts you might send to the Colonel. And of course, right away, like on those that we said worldwide, they always go to commercial break, like right after they make the entrances. But I thought it was weird that he's like, I'm available. Available for commercials, modeling jobs and any movie scripts. Like he's an actor or something. Like, I get it, he was in Hollywood Blondes and the gimmick was, you know, maybe they're from Hollywood or something. But now he's, he's. And at this point too, you know, where he would be frustrated. He's. He's kind of like buying into that. Like I'm. I'm a big star. I could do modeling jobs and commercials. Just kind of weird. So anyway, they do go to commercials. And yeah, on the recording we had, there were the commercials. So I watched them. And just a little throwback here. We had some combo commercials. You had the cheddar cheese pretzel and the mustard. Pretzel, cheddar cheese. Obviously better than the mustard, I think. But I guess they didn't have my favorite ones yet, the pizza ones at that point.
Speaker C:Yeah, the pizza ones were the best ones.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker C:Pizza stuff is good.
Speaker B:Yeah. Anything. Pizza is good.
Speaker C:Yeah. Like sign me up, right?
Speaker B:Even that fake pizza. Taste that all that has. It's fine. It's good. They had a splash out. Water balloon game. Water not included. Can't believe they said that. Water not included. No, Biker Mice from Mars. Remember that? Biker Mice from Mars. Yep. And they had action figures. I don't know what the they were from. Probably just a cartoon. I don't know. Maybe they were like some independent comic book, like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were. I don't know.
Speaker C:Oh, I never thought of that. Probably.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker C:Dark Horse or something.
Speaker B:Yeah, maybe I'm gonna take a look after. And then also flare ultra 94 cards. I remember getting those. Those are cool. And they had like the foil. One of the first cards have like foil. Shit. So anyway, back to the action. Terry Taylor still wearing his Red Rooster gear. And you would think he would switch up the colors and get away from that look, but he either wears that. He wears that often the red. But sometimes he'll wear black. But usually he's. He's still wearing that Red Rooster ship. Anyway, so the match starts off like JV had said. Usually we just start slow. And that happens here. Again, Austin and Taylor circle each other and Randy Anderson is a referee. Austin avoids Taylor multiple times and he does that by sticking his body into the middle of the top rope. The middle of the top rope. So he's like, he's trying to just break, break it up and eventually finally get a lockup. After about a minute, they back into the corner. They each had the advantage briefly and then they break it up again. So again it's dragging out. Austin continues to avoid Taylor. Another lockup. Same back to the corner. Austin is pulling Taylor's hair. The ref doesn't see it. Austin breaks the tie up, backs up. Taylor's now pissed, runs, runs after Austin. Then Austin jumps through the ropes to the ringside area. Colonel Parker fans, Austin's hat, off with the Scalboy fans. Austin off with the Scowboy hat. You know, like he's done a whole lot. He's been avoiding Terry Taylor for now about three minutes. Austin gets back in the ring and yet another tie up. Finally we get some action. They hit the ropes. Austin knocks Taylor down with the shoulder block. Taylor pops up as Austin hits the ropes and executes an arm drag takedown to Austin. Taylor has Austin's arm, but Austin gets to the ropes to break the hold as Colonel Parker wipes the sweat off of Austin's face with his handkerchief. Very nice of Parker to do that. Austin rolls out of the ring and yells that Taylor was grabbing his trunks. Randy Anderson turns to Taylor, starts yelling at him and questioning him. You know, is. You know, this gets me to think, is Randy Anderson's character just supposed to be dumb? You Know he. That he just believes they heal, right? Oh, he pulled my trunks. And then you get mad.
Speaker C:Seems that way, yeah.
Speaker B:That's so ridiculous.
Speaker C:Like you never like actually called the dq?
Speaker B:No, no, I don't think so. He just, he just yells at the other guy. Yeah, he just believes the hill yells at the good guy. And I, I mean, I know what it's supposed to. It's supposed to get the crowd to be like, I pay attention, do exactly. And listen the response that he's getting from me right now. Anyway. Tony wonders why Austin has to resort to pulling here and cheating if they can do so many great things in the ring. You know, he's saying Austin's good. Why is he doing this? Why is he cheating? Tony mentions it must be the influence of Colonel Parker. So I don't know if that's like alluding to maybe a split between them. Like Austin doesn't need Parker because Austin's good on his own. So maybe they're planting the seeds that that might be happening. Austin might be on his own soon. Taylor gets Austin on the mat with an arm lock. Taylor wrenches it and Austin sells it well. He even gives a. Ah. And you can hear it on. On it. Picks up on the mic. And at that time that would have been, you know, for me watching that when I was 11 years old, I would have been like, oh, swear. Like that was a big deal to me. The hair swear on wrestling. It's like, oh, holy moly. So anyway, you get, you get to hear that. Taylor then puts another arm lock into a pin and tip. He gets a two count. Austin then begs off to the corner flat on his back. Referee backs Taylor away from him to allow Austin to get up. So really helping out the heel here, Randy Anderson. Austin gets up and extends his hand as a sign of goodwill to Taylor, which Taylor ignores, and they back up and then we get a lock up again. Austin quickly gets to go behind, then rolls up. Taylor pulls the tights, but only gets two. Despite cheating, Austin quickly takes Taylor back down with a drop toe hold. Taylor quickly reverses and locks in a hammer lock and drives his knee into Austin's back. Then Taylor grabs and pulls on Austin's chin to increase the pain. So very well done. You know, we've talked about it before. It's nice when they actually, you know, wrench the ham a lock.
Speaker C:Yeah, they like make it look like they're trying to add that extra exactly to the move, you know.
Speaker B:Yep. So that's what Taylor's doing there. You know, we all know Taylor is an awesome wrestler, so it goes without saying, it just sucks that, you know, you have this match and they're just dragging it out. It's like they're probably told, you guys, you guys got to do this much time and there's not, there's not really any story heat between you guys, so figure it out. Anyway, they work their way back to the feet. Austin gets loose from the hair. Moloch back elbows Taylor in the jaw as the crowd's chanting kfc, kfc. So they're bored and they just immediately go to their KFC ship. Austin lands a right hand punch to Terry Terry's head in the corner. The ref one's Austin about no closed fist punches, and Austin lands a couple of knife edge chops in the corner. Instead, he whips Taylor to the opposite corner and rushes at him. Taylor hops up on the top turnbuckle and rolls up. Austin to the center of the ring for a two count. Then we get an arm drag, quick cover for a two count. Tony Schiavone says that Taylor, Terry Taylor is wrestling a fine match here and he really is at this point, so things are starting to pick up. Taylor keeps Austin on the mat. Meanwhile, Jesse ponders. Jesse Ventura ponders how many hankies Colonel Parker goes through in a week. And Tony says he, he mainly uses them as choking devices though, which is true, but it's funny that Jesse's even wondering how many hankies you think he uses. Anyway, Austin breaks loose and crawls out of the ring. Austin calls Parker over to cool him off. Austin grabs Taylor's legs and slides him out of the ring. Taylor fights back with a couple of right hands and Austin dives back into the ring. Austin hits the ropes, misses a couple of times, and Taylor is able to catch him and get him in a sleeper hold. Austin eventually breaks that hold with a jawbreaker, which we've seen numerous times. One of Austin's go to moves get put in the sleeper and then, you know, drop down and break that hold. So good spot there. Both men are now on the mat briefly before Austin hits a beautiful vertical suplex to Terry Taylor. That's followed up by a knee drop to Taylor. Austin hooked Taylor's arms into the corner, locks him up, then lands a few punches and kicks the Taylor's gut. As Tony says, his solar plexus never. You never hear that in real life. Someone's stomach or gut is a solar plexus. Austin hip tosses tailored to the center of the ring. Austin gets on the middle rope, then Comes down with a double ax handle. A little different. We haven't seen Austin do that and I always think that's a lame spot anyway. Double ax handle, an arrogant cover, only gets Austin a two count. Austin locks in a front face Chancery. And they're down on the mat for a bit. Surely you know this is the go home spot time. And then they begin to plan to wrap up the match. They begin to make their way up. The crowd is chair and Taylor on and very creative crowd. Go, go, go, go, go. So they got KFC chance and go chance. Much different than today's chance. Taylor does that, you know he does, he does just that. He does a belly to belly suplex into a bridge in a pin combination. It only gets two against the champ. Austin quickly is back on offense with a snap mare knee drop, cover for two. Austin got to the second turnbuckle and he goes for that double ax handle again. But Taylor is ready and punches Austin in the solar plexus. And then Taylor gets Austin in the corner, nails him with a series of chops, then a whip to the the opposite corner. Nice standing drop kick. Terry is on fire at this point. He whips Austin to the ropes, then Austin bounces off the ropes and then Terry also kicks him with a reverse crescent kick. And he goes for the COVID but still only two. Taylor gets Austin up, attempts to whip Austin, but Austin reverses. Austin misses a chop. Taylor hits the ropes, comes at Austin with a cross body. But Taylor had too much momentum and he rolls over. So he connects with Austin, but rolls over and Austin gets on top of him. Austin hooks the legs and gets his feet on the second rope, gets some extra leverage and gets the three count. So Austin sneaks one out there again.
Speaker C:Harry Taylor finish though.
Speaker B:Yeah, cool finish. You know, Terry, it looks like Terry was going to have the win there, but a little. Just too much on that crossbody and Austin took advantage. Yeah, so, you know, good back and forth match kind of started off slow at times, you know, and they, and they dragged it out a little bit. You know, the crowd, crowd was into it for the most part and they like Terry Taylor. So, you know, this is a match that would have benefited even more if it was the title match, I think. But you know, like I said to start the match is that this is our good reason and that's because the clash was coming up and Johnny B. Bad already had the title shot. All right, now there is just one side out here.
Speaker C:I just got to say something.
Speaker B:Yeah, go ahead.
Speaker C:So I'm following Along as you're going through the match and I look at your notes and the last sentence, the last line of your notes has three words which you're going to get to. And I'm like, what the fuck happened in this match? You know what three words I'm talking about already, Right.
Speaker B:In the side note.
Speaker C:I'll highlight them if you can. Yeah, you can see me scrolling, right?
Speaker B:Okay. And you thought that was part of the match. Yeah, look.
Speaker C:What the heck's going on? Turn it to spice.
Speaker B:All right, so while watching that match, there was a commercial break and I had to take note of this commercial. And I even said, I think I sent you the. Send you this back when I was doing the notes originally. Right. Then I think so. No, I put it in, I put it in the chat, so.
Speaker C:Oh, then I missed it. Yeah, I think. And if it was a video.
Speaker B:Yeah, I took a video.
Speaker C:Oh, all right.
Speaker B:Yeah, I took a video with my phone and just posted the video there.
Speaker C:Oh, I don't think I watched it.
Speaker B:It's. Yeah, who knows? I don't remember when we took the notes at this point, but. Yeah, but it's a commercial. It's like an infomercial kinda. And let me just read through this. It's. It's called remote guard commercial. So this is like a low budget infomercial. Basically what it is. It's an elastic band that you attach your remote control to, then you can clip it to anything you want. You can clip it to your couch, you can clip it to the side table. And then you don't lose your controller because it's, it's connected to a freaking elastic band. And the guy in the commercial, he's supposed to be this mad scientist, but he has this hot blonde assistant. Anyway, at one point they're both on the chair, so he's on his like recliner like a lazy boy. And then this assistant who's just like a nurse or mad scientist assistant, whatever, and she's like on his lap kinda, and she has the controller. So he's reclining and she's on his lap. She, she's pulling the remote that's attached to the band. She's pulling it back and forth, but the way that it's positioned, you know, she's pulling it, but it's like she's jerking him off. And then he even pretends like he's having an orgasm at one of the points. So he's like talking and selling the product. And then while she's doing that stroking thing, he just throws In a. Ooh. At the same time. So yeah, that was that. And I was like, what the hell? This was a commercial back in 1994. That was on WCW Saturday Night Worldwide.
Speaker C:The 90s were a special time.
Speaker B:Oh, my God. So, yeah, so JV was talking about, you know, he was looking ahead and he saw. Jerking him off in my note. Initially thought, you know, Johnny B. No, Terry Taylor and Austin. Yeah.
Speaker C:What happened?
Speaker B:Someone's jerking him off. All right, so from there now, we'll move on to WCW Saturday night. And I think we just got a promo here. Yeah. So got a promo from WWE Saturday night. It's June 11, 1994. It's an interview with Austin, Colonel Parker, and Meng. Take a listen to that. It's about a few minutes long. And we'll be right back.
Speaker A:Eureka. I've discovered the answer to the world's greatest mystery. Where's the remote? I've invented Remote God. Multipurpose gadget gripper. Fits snugly around any remote control that clips to almost everything. Get bigger remote constantly. Ooh.
Speaker B:By your side.
Speaker A:You get three for 1295. Satisfaction guaranteed. Oh. 1-800-God, 03 remote God to search it so far.
Speaker D:Larry Fancy. All right, thank you very much, Brain.
Speaker A:As the US Champ.
Speaker D:Stunning Steve, Colonel Parker and Ming are out here after a great win by Johnny B.
Speaker A:Van. I wanna. Johnny, hold on. I want you to lend me your ears for just a minute over here. Y' all been saying Steve Austin here, I win all of his matches. I out here. Well, I want to tell. I don't even want to set a tide, sir, but I'm going to tell you, this might be doing you a favor. Might not. This man's the greatest star and he don't need me out here. He's still under contract, but he'll be going to that ring by himself from now on. I want you to come over here, Johnny. I want you to come over here. Now don't be scared. Don't be a scared Johnny. What's that smell, Johnny? Did someone throw a skunk in a ring? Or is that the smell of your last match? Now get over here. I got a few words to say to you. Now don't get too close to me, kid. Don't get too close. Because I know when a man like you gets too close to a man like me, you'd probably lean over and kiss me, wouldn't you, Johnny? Huh? Oh, you lean over and kiss me, wouldn't you, you little pansy? You feel good about your. You feel good about your U.S. title shot. Your rematch, Johnny. What you do? Did you cry to the board of directors? The only reason I'm not the US Heavyweight Champion of the world is because of Colonel Robert Parker. Because of you. Shut up. I called you out here. This is my interview time. Let me tell you something, Johnny. Let me tell you something. I hope you're proud of yourself, Johnny, because your parents have gotta be horrified. You have been playing a cruel, cruel trick on my life. You're a freak of nature. And let me tell you another thing. If I put you in this white bag right here, if I put you in this trash bag, you couldn't wrestle your way out of it. I'm gonna tell you right now, Johnny, you don't stand a chance, kid. You don't stand again. Don't go nowhere. Don't go nowhere. Don't go nowhere, son. You look real pretty. Don't touch me, Johnny. Don't you dare touch your United States champion. I look at you, Johnny, and I gotta say. I gotta say to you, Tony, in my opinion, he'd make a damn good looking woman, wouldn't he? When he wakes up, make sure he brings the belt to the Clash of the Champions. Fans, we gotta take a break.
Speaker B:All right? So on this episode of WCW Saturday Night, Johnny B. Bad had the opening match. He defeated the terrorist. And after the match, as Johnny's leaving the ringside area, Tony is about to start an interview with Stunning Steve and Colonel Parker along with Mink. Johnny's about to walk away from this. So he sees it's about to happen. Johnny's like, I don't want to deal with this, so I'm just get the hell out of here. But Colonel Parker calls him over as he wants Johnny to lend him his ears for a minute. Parker says that Johnny has been saying that all of Austin's wins have come from Colonel Parker cheating. That's pretty accurate. Has for the most part very not a lie. Anyway, he says, I'm gonna tell you this, I might be in. I might be doing you a favor. I might not. This man is the greatest star of all. We don't need. He don't need me out here. He's still on the contract. We'll be going. He'll be going to that ring by himself from now on. So Colonel Parker saying Austin will be going to the ring from now on by himself, doesn't need me. He's still my guy, but I'm not going out there with him anymore. You claim that I'm cheating. I won't be out there anymore. And you'll see he'll win the matches on his own from now on. So Parker is making the point that Austin can win without him. And I was wondering if there was something, you know, storyline wise for why Colonel Parker would all of a sudden not be with Austin anymore. Because I remember it was like, oh, why? Why does this happen? So, you know, there it is. This is why Colonel Parker eventually isn't with Austin anymore, is because Parker says Austin doesn't need him outside at the ring. And also what we see with Colonel Parker is that they're moving him more to being with guys that are more like his character in his gimmick. So he's now with, you know, Bunkhouse Buck more going forward. And then, you know, because he doesn't really fit with Austin. So there's that. You know, I also wonder if this was another way of screwing Austin by taking this very good heel manager away from him too, you know, to make him not as relevant. Because now you don't have Colonel Parker with him, who's generally involved in good angles. So you also get less heat from the fans because, you know, park is not there. So, you know, even if it wasn't a great match that Austin was having, you know, a great opponent, you would still have the crowd into the match because they could be chanting KFC and yelling at Colonel Parker and. And now that would just be taken away from Austin and, you know, and in some cases it might look make Austin's matches look dull without Parker there. So I don't know, they could be screwing Austin over. This could be one of those instances where it was like, oh, yeah, we're just going to strip him of his manager now. Take some heat away from him. Austin gets on the mic and he wants Johnny to come over and not be a scared. Don't be a scared Johnny.
Speaker C:Don't be a scared.
Speaker B:Reminds me of something like totally Fall river, big time feel scared, afraid and scared combination. Austin says it smells like skunk or it might just smell like Johnny's previous match. That's a good line.
Speaker C:It's a great line.
Speaker B:Oh, it's funny. Johnny comes over. Austin tells him to not get so close. And Austin is holding a white paper bag for some reason. Looks like a bag. Like a bagel or a donut would be in, you know, the kind of bag where I would be like, what's this? Yeah, yeah, yeah, what's in the Batman.
Speaker C:Flick the aluminum foil up or whatever's over it just a little bit.
Speaker B:What kind of donuts in Here. All right, so anyway, Austin says he doesn't want Johnny too close because if a man like Johnny was too close to a man like him, Johnny might try to lean over and kiss him. Huh? You lean over and kiss me, wouldn't you, you little pansy? Like, what's going on here? It's called. He's basically calling Johnny be bad gay now. Yes, but, yeah, it's like, do you feel good about your rematch, Johnny? What'd you do, cry to the board of directors? Johnny says the only reason why he isn't the U.S. champion of the world. U.S. champion of the world. Okay, I didn't know that made sense. US Champion, not of the world. All right, anyway, so it's because of Colonel Parker. It's the reason why he's not the US Champion of the world. Austin tells Johnny to shut up. I called you out here. This is my interview time. And Austin looks Johnny up and down, and then lasts. Let me tell you something, Johnny. I hope you're proud of yourself because your parents got to be horrified. You have been playing a cruel trick. You're a freak of nature, basically. Looking at him like they're gonna be. They gotta be not happy with you because of how you dressed and how you look. So he's just, you know, he's asking for it, basically. He's. He's saying all the worst shit he could say to Johnny that. Austin tells Johnny that if you put him in this white paper bag, so he is using it as a prop. Johnny couldn't wrestle his way out of this paper bag. Austin tells Johnny that he doesn't stand the chance. Johnny tries to walk off, but then Austin nudges him and tells him not to go anywhere. Austin even pokes Johnny's cheek with his finger. Don't go nowhere, son. You look real pretty. It's kind of like, I don't know, like a Southern. Like a movie from the 70s. Like a Southern bully. Oh, where you going, son? Like, yeah, it's exactly, yeah, that kind of thing. So Johnny does not take the words kindly and gives. Austin just nails him with the left hook. Austin falls to the floor and Johnny goes. When he wakes up, make sure he brings the belt to the Clash of Champions. So, like, he's gonna forget it, right? But, you know, that was a big spot building up two Clash. You know, Johnny just knocked him out. He knocked him out at Slamberry after the match. Now he's knocked him out here on WCW Saturday Night. So Donnie is getting the best of Austin lately. And with that, you know, Just a couple of side notes from that episode of WWE Saturday Night from June 11, 1994. Sensational. Sherry continues to tease that Flying Bryant is her new man, and she continues to watch him at ringside. Flair gives another interview with Tony Schiavone. This time Flair is serious. He says, last week maybe we over. He overreacted about the signing of Hulk Hogan. And he says, maybe in the eyes of everyone, but not in my eyes. So he starts freaking out again. So it looks like at first he's gonna like, calm down, but then he just flips out. He says he's not happy. He says, who told Kogan anyway? He's not the world champion. He's not even here today. Hogan be at the Clash of Champions. Be there to see what greatness is all about. So also throughout this episode, they've been. They've been hyping Hulk Hogan's live signing at Disney MGM Studios. Hogan's gonna be with Jimmy Hart. And yeah, so Hogan comes in, you know, then they. They have this, you know, live moment here, I guess. I guess it's live. Who the knows if really was? So Hogan drives in with his red and yellow convertible, and it kind of looks like shit because they're. They're on this Disney MGM lot. It's daytime and you would expect it to be like crazy amount of people and whatnot, but barely anybody's there. It looks pathetic. And then you have Hogan sitting on the back of the convertible, like in the back seat sitting up, and it's like he's Santa Claus and Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade waving at people sitting in the. In the convertible. And this is gonna take basically the last 20 minutes of that episode of Saturday night. And they've been just waiting for it, waiting for. And continues on for the whole episode. So Hogan eventually does get to a stage and he starts playing to the crowd. He's doing the waving and, and, you know, posing. It looks a little, little better now because now they've basically took all the people and pushed them together so it doesn't look so sparse out, you know. So now it looks like there's a crowd there because they're all together. And Hogan signs the contract and he says, get ready for the ride of your lives, everybody. And Hogan says that he wants to beat the man. Says, you all know who. You all know who to be the man. You got to beat the man. So Hogan already wants to be the number one contender. The moment he gets there, he says, I want to be no more contender. After Flair versus things, unification Match. What kind of bullshit? Say he just comes in, I'm gonna be the title in the next title match. Yeah, like that's freaking, that's gonna piss off everybody.
Speaker C:Yeah, like you make no friends.
Speaker B:So obviously in reality that's the same case too is that all these people like Austin have been working their ass off to get an opportunity. And here comes Hogan and you know, everything's just gonna change for him.
Speaker C:I mean, justifiably he helped his people. The people that were in his corner that he had built relationships with, those are the people he kind of like, you know, kind of brought and advanced with him. Right, that makes sense.
Speaker B:Yeah. So you know, you're definitely gonna have people that are upset by it, but on the other side of it, you know, it's, it helped the business to help wcw. So you, if you're in charge, you like basically, like we've heard so many times in wrestling over the years, it's what's best for business, you know, it really was. So even if, you know, you've been doing a great job of Austin and others, but sorry, things have changed and this is the new direction trying to make money.
Speaker C:We're trying to stay a business.
Speaker B:Right. All right, so from there now we go to jv, who has coverage of a week later. What do you got on WWE Pro?
Speaker C:All right, so on WCW Pro, June 18, 1994, that was actually my parents anniversary, we have a non US Championship title match between stunning Steve Austin and Eric Watts. And this is in front of about 1700 people in Gainesville, Georgia. So before the match we get that replay of Austin and Johnny Bad's interaction from the previous WCW Saturday night so that we can see Johnny's big right hand again. You know, that's actually good storytelling. They're trying to put the, you know, emphasis and get Johnny B. Bad's big right hand over. And in typical fashion, the match starts off in the scrub. Eric Watts is in control of the match early against stunning Steve Austin, the US Champion. Austin eventually takes control with the head scissors. That not much with this match. Head scissors into a top wrist lock. Watt takes control again with a big backdrop. Austin then hits a big fist drop from the top rope. It's always cool when you see Austin go to the top rope. Watts staggers Austin though with a series of right hands and then a big right roundhouse right hand, which, you know, roundhouse just kind of winds up clocks him, followed by a failed pin attempt. Colonel Parker is like visibly frustrated outside of the ring. He doesn't like the way this match is going. So naturally he gets on the apron to distract the ref, who I actually think is Anderson, believe it or not. Watts turns his back on Austin to attack Parker. And Austin takes advantage of that and rolls Watts up for the win, using the ropes as leverage as the ref was not in position to see the pin. I hate this match. I hate the ending. I mean, they're putting. So before the match they go and put John B. Bad's big right hand over and then they make Austin look like a. Like to struggle to be Eric Watts and he has to cheat again to beat him like he shouldn't like. And I can understand where Parker gets involved or Austin needs to use leverage, but against Eric Watts?
Speaker B:Yeah. Ridiculous.
Speaker C:Look, what are we doing?
Speaker B:Right?
Speaker C:What are we doing? It's a non title match. It should just be a quick cleanup for Austin, which we used to see early in like early in his run in his, his singles career. He used to just like beat people up in wcw. Unless I'm revisionist history here, like. Oh yeah, you know, I mean, like I feel like now he's just like they like, you can be a heel, but he's like a really bitch heel now.
Speaker B:Right before he, you know, like you said, he was just kicking the shit out. People dropping with a stun gun on the rope and the match was over. Yep. But taking that away from him too.
Speaker C:It makes you wonder if they were just trying to set it up knowing like, all right, we don't want this guy to have success anywhere.
Speaker B:It's gotta be because you know you've.
Speaker C:Ruined his draw power.
Speaker B:Right.
Speaker C:I mean, I don't know. This is.
Speaker B:Yes. Slowly just making them not seem like he should even be in the title picture.
Speaker C:Yeah.
Speaker B:Because they know for sure he should have been. But they're intentionally doing things to make it look like, oh yeah, the fans will know he doesn't belong there anymore. Yep.
Speaker C:Oh, he don't draw. He's not a good wrestler. Fans don't like him.
Speaker B:Right.
Speaker C:He barely be Eric, essentially.
Speaker B:But it simply put, they're just de. Pushing him. Yeah.
Speaker C:Taking the air out.
Speaker B:Right, right. And hey, one, one other thing though. Who's our ringside with? Him. They just, he just said he wouldn't be at ringside.
Speaker C:Oh, Colonel Parker.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker C:Yeah.
Speaker B:And he's there.
Speaker C:Good call.
Speaker B:Just get this. We get this big promo about how he's not going to be there anymore.
Speaker C:Right?
Speaker B:Yeah. And then, I mean. Yes. This is WCW Pro, Right. It's not Saturday night, so maybe, maybe they figured Out. Most people don't watch pro or something, you know, and this is. It's not even like this was taped before that interview. This is taped after the interview. This was taped on June 2, whereas that interview was in May, you know, taped in May.
Speaker C:Just look into at those dates too before and you're just to make sure. And yeah, you just confirmed it.
Speaker B:Yeah. So it's like, what the hell? You had this whole big thing and it led to the Austin getting punched by Johnny B. Bad. And then. And then you still have Parker at ringside with them. What the fuck you doing?
Speaker C:It's dumb.
Speaker B:So, yeah, that's Parker's promise. And we're gonna see more examples of that throughout the rest of this episode though. Yep.
Speaker C:All right, so moving on here, we're gonna jump now to WCW Worldwide, which was on the same day, just taped differently. And we got an audio clip and it's stunning. Steve Austin with Colonel Parker and Meng. So they're with Tony Schiavone here. You're gonna give that a listen. It's about just under two minutes long. And we'll be back to cover it.
Speaker D:All right, we continue on Worldwide with the US Champ setting Steve Ming and Colonel Rob Parker.
Speaker A:It's been a big weekend.
Speaker D:I know it's gonna be a big.
Speaker A:Thursday for this man, Charlie. And how about your big news about Mr. Hulk Ho Hogan coming in? You know, I want to warn you, Mr. Hogan, you come in here, you're going to be dealing with the likes of Steve Austin here. You know, let me move right on along here. Time and time again, Steve Austin's been asked to go to the fire with this title. He's never once let me down. But it seems like every time a man gets beaten by Steve, he wants to come over to the Colonel. He wants to hurt the closest thing to him. Well, I invite you now, sir, to do that because Ming's gonna be right here with me. We're gonna make Johnny B. Sad pay for it one more time. Am I right? And Johnny B. Band has gotta learn about every man at some point in his life. Learns about respect. Nobody, and I mean nobody, sucker punches stunning Steve Austin. I represent the United States of America as the heavyweight wrestling champion Johnny B. Bad. You look out here at your TV screen and you want to be Steve Austin. Just like everybody out across the world watching on their black and white TVs. My picture covered on your TV is the only ray of sunshine in your life. Johnny B. Band at the Clash of the Champions. I'm going to show you? Why? I'm the best in the world.
Speaker D:See you next week, fans. Promotional considerations paid for by the following.
Speaker E:The incredibly wet and.
Speaker C:All right, so Tony is with the trio backstage. Schiavone tells Parker it's going to be a big weekend for Austin. Parker then responds, and he wants to first address the big news of Hogan, Hulk Hogan coming to wcw. And Parker wants to warn Hogan that when he comes to wcw, he's gonna have to deal with with the likes of Steve Austin. Parker says time and time again, Austin has gone to fire to defend the belt and has never let Colonel Parker down. And every time Austin defends the title, the loser attempts to take it out on me, Colonel Parker. But Parker says that can't happen now with Meng in their corner. Ain't that the truth?
Speaker B:No.
Speaker C:Parker says they're gonna make Johnny B. Sad pay for it one more time. Austin says Johnny Be Bad is gonna learn that every man at some point in his life has to learn about respect. Austin says, nobody sucker punches Steve Austin. I represent the United States of America as the US Champion. Austin then says, Johnny wants to be like Stunning Steve, just like everyone on their TV wants to be Stunning Steve Austin claims he's the face on tv. His face on TV is the only sunshine in everyone's lives. Austin tells Johnny that at Clash, he's going to show him why he's the best in the world. I thought that was another good promo by Austin.
Speaker B:Yeah, another solid one. And continued to build to the Clashing.
Speaker C:Him like, speak still.
Speaker B:Well, that, that's true. Right? And he, he's taking full advantage of his interview time because he knows it's the only time that he's actually able to do what he wants. Really?
Speaker C:Yeah, it's really the only way he can protect his. Protect his brand.
Speaker B:Right. Other than that, he's just getting with the finishes of matches and shit. Yep. All right, so let's move on now to WCW Saturday night from June 18, 1994. This was also at center stage in Atlanta. It was taped back on May 2, 1994, and I have a job at match this time. And it's stunning Steve up against Barry Houston. So Austin's gonna head out to the ring with Colonel Parker and Meng, even though again, Colonel Parker said that he would not be going to ringside with Austin anymore. But here he is again coming down. And this was the same exact, exact taping. This was June 2nd, so the taping where he said he wasn't going to come down to the ring with him anymore. This was the Same table. So I figured maybe, you know, because the audience would have been like confused there live. Like, what the hell? You just said you weren't coming down, but now you are. This match must have been taped before that interview segment when he said that. Who the hell knows? So anyway, maybe it was just airing out of order. Yeah. Also another thing is it would make more sense to have this promo on June 18th then on like as it is. So it makes sense to have it playing here on the June 18 episode just days before the Clash.
Speaker C:Yep.
Speaker B:But the reason why it wasn't on last week's episode is because last week was a two hour episode. So I think they're just trying to get enough footage for the two hours and then they put it in the 11 hour. Something. Something to that effect. It had something to do with the Braves game and they had to cut short, so they. They had to adjust. Like what aired in particular order. Something to that effect. Anyway, it's wcw. It's all.
Speaker C:They're all over the place.
Speaker B:So anyway, Austin's taking on this youngster, Barry Houston, as they call him. He's wearing blue tights with red hearts along the sides of each ass cheek. The gear is so generic. So anyway, I guess there's. I guess they're making this match seem like a tune up match for Austin to continue his push to the Clash of champions. And Austin gets immediate control in this one. He just tosses Austin Houston. I got Austin in Houston, Texas. Yeah, yeah.
Speaker C:What a mind.
Speaker B:All right, so Austin tosses Houston into the corner and then he tosses him around a bit, covers them, and then intentionally breaks the count before three. So he's toying with this. Houston gives him a snap mare elbow drop, chokes on the middle rope, chops in the corner. So Austin's having a field day with Barry Houston. And then Austin starts to work the knee. Bobby says that Austin looks like he's getting ready to take a little ride on Hollywood and Vine. And Austin continues to toy with him, goes for cover, breaks it again on two. Then Austin locks in a standing variation of the figure fold that we call that's a wrap. Or it's called that's a wrap. So Barry Houston submits to that's a wrap. So breaking away from the Hollywood and Vine a bit. And we go with that's a wrap. Which is. I like it better than the Hollywood and Vine. Hollywood. Vine kind of sucks. They both kind of suck. Anyway, both these submission moves, for real, they are awful. Just do the stun gun.
Speaker C:Yeah, just yeah, just do the stun gun. It was cool. It looked powerful. It involved the ropes which are always dangerous. Like right. There's no reason we doing Hollywood and.
Speaker B:Vine for leg locks and. Yeah, come on. All right, so anyway it's the, the new one that's a wrap actually makes it look more like a submission rather than just a grapevine roll up pin attempt because that's how Hollywood vine look. It's supposed to be a submission leg lock but he like rolls over and it's like a pin count too. This one, you know, it's kind of like a figure four a little bit more. All right, so from there now Austin is going to be interviewed. So we'll play the audio for that about two minutes. So take a listen and we'll be right back.
Speaker D:Going to be talking to him in just a moment. Colonel Robert Parker and this awesome bodyguard thing. Come on in gentlemen. On the subject of Bunker House Buck and Terry Funk, as you know right now financial Dustin Rhodes is talking to the enforcer Arn Anderson. Watch out.
Speaker A:Let him go. I shock the world with the introduction of Terry Funk and Slamber Ree. Buck and Funk is going to be the greatest team you ever seen here. And imagine him going out and taking A.R. anderson as a partner. After all the. The invitations I made to. Yeah, I smoothed him a little bit. I did. I won't be smoothing him no more. He's going to eat the same lunch as that puppy does.
Speaker D:That's schmoozing. Colonel, I hate to correct you. May any not. United States heavyweight champ stunning Steve Austin at the big one at the Clash. You've got Johnny B. Bad.
Speaker A:Got Johnny B. Bad one more time. And I really don't think Johnny deserves another shot at the United States champion. As you well know, I'm the number one contender for the world titles and it seems all the champions keep ducking stunning Steve Austin footage.
Speaker D:If I may, I. I'm sure you're going to want to see this. As a matter of fact, last week, ladies and gentlemen, right here, stunning Steve Austin was here and he was confronted by Johnny Bat. Take a look at what happened.
Speaker A:I gotta say no, you're not supposed to show my opponent. Damn good luck to come out here and say anything I want, Keith. And you've got no right to show that footage. What are you waiting. I'm gonna show you why they call me Stunning Steve Austin. And you'll never live down the day you show down this thing. It's not right, Gene.
Speaker D:I'm sorry about that. I didn't mean to offend the United States heavyweight champ, Sonny Steve Austin. Main crowd, Colonel Parker, Stay tuned. We're gonna be back with more Saturday night after this.
Speaker B:All right, so Austin's out there with Colonel Parker, and Gene talks to Parker first about Terry Funk and Bunkhouse Buck teaming up to go up against Arne Anderson and Dustin Rhodes. And then Gene finally brings up Austin's match. Would Johnny be bad at the Clash? Austin says he doesn't really think Johnny deserves another shot, but this will be his last shot. So basically letting everyone know that this feud is just about over here. Austin says as the US Champion, he's the number one contender for the world titles. Both titles, you know, and both of the champions have been ducking him. When I saw that, my notes ducking him, I had to think, did I mean, or is it ducking? But it is ducking. Gene plays the clip from last week of Bad knocking Austin out during their interview. We just recently covered that. Donnie Ben knocks him out. So, you know, back to what I was saying before about the order. So I guess they actually intended this to be the proper order of events because this is leading right into Clash. So even though it was recorded out of order, they intentionally put it on this episode because of that. But in the meantime, by doing that, they disregarded their whole interview of saying Colonel Parker won't be with the meringue side anymore just so that they could have this before the clash. Oh, kind of stupid. Austin is pissed that Gene is now rolling that footage again. And he said, it's not right, Gene, that they're playing the footage of him getting knocked out by Johnny B. Bad again. All right, so some other side notes for what was going on WW Saturday night. And the only reason why I had the side notes here is because, you know, there's big things going on. So I figured I'd mention some of them. So me and Gene interviews Hulk Hogan at mgm. Hogan says that he wants Flair and he'll see him at the Clash, which is on Thursday. Okay, so they're basically giving her away already that Flair will be Sting and be the sole champion and defend against Hogan at the Bash. You know, it's. It's pretty clear, like, it's not gonna be Sting versus Hogan for the championship.
Speaker C:No, no, no. They're not gonna have Face versus Face.
Speaker B:No. Also, you have Ray Traylor. He has this swearing in to become a guardian angel.
Speaker C:Ray trailer. Guardian angel. Who's the guy that runs to mayor all the time? Curtis Sliwa.
Speaker B:Oh, yeah.
Speaker C:In New York I mean, I think it's cool what they do, but it's funny that they made a character out of it.
Speaker B:I know. It's funny to see, like, all the real ones hanging out with them, too. Like in these videos in Boston, walking in the subway. Streets. Yeah. Oh, yeah, that's right. Yeah. He's working the streets. He's working in subways. He's probably afraid. Yeah, he's like, somebody's gonna us up. So he gives a little oath. He says, I will always remain calm, cool and collected. I will not pick up a weapon to hurt a man or a woman. I will dare to care. I'll be a positive role model for the children. And then Ray's given his T shirt and his little beret. Then he gets a training certificate and he's. He's now a guardian angel. But she really wasn't. But. But I. I even had to look those. Like, I know it's wrestling, but did he really become a guardian angel? And he didn't really. Anyway, Bash at the beach has a promo. Like I said, they're give. They're already giving away the Hogan flair. They're saying, will Flair wrestle Hogan? It's never happened before. Will it happen now? Is this the big one? Yes, it is. And again, it was another short episode because the Braves were playing the Reds at 705 and get their ass kicked 16 to nothing. I'm Glavin was on the mount. He gave up six runs and six innings. And the bullpen. Bullpen sucked ass and gave up 10 more runs. So rough one there. All right, so now we move on to the next day. And it's a big up, you know, epic proportions. And jv, I don't think you've heard of this because I didn't know about it, but I guess it's been out there. And, you know, people have talked about this before, you know, on podcast, whatnot, but I hadn't. And just I go through every episode leading up, you know, through what we're watching, just to find, like, if there's something, you know, something Austin related. But what I found here was hilarious. And this is a WCW main event. June 19th. Okay, Clash of Champions isn't until the Thursday coming up, right?
Speaker C:So just days away, right?
Speaker B:Yeah. Classic champions. Just days away. All right, so here we go. On June 19, 1994 episode of the Main Event, they air an early bash at the beach control center. Hey, it's early. They're airing it out of order. Mean Gene says that we have a brand new undisputed unified U. S. Champion, the Nature Boy, Ric Flair. History was made. Thursday night, the Clash of Champions by defeating Stink.
Speaker C:No way that really happened.
Speaker B:Yep.
Speaker C:Wow.
Speaker B:It was. They aired just days before the Clash, and they up and they put the wrong. They recorded it ahead of time. And it was meant to be on the June. June 26 main event, but they put it on the June 19 main event by accident. So anybody was watching that. And this was the last program that they air before Clash of Champions, because this is the Sunday night show, obviously. So, yeah, if anybody was watching them now, a lot of people probably don't.
Speaker C:Watch Main event, but imagine if the Internet was around.
Speaker B:Oh, my God. Yeah. If the Internet was around, it would just be right there. And they would have Clash of Champions royally. Yeah. So it continues on, he says, but for how long? Bash of the beach is only three weeks away. On July 17, which bash of the beach was four weeks away. Now, they up big time there, you know, and it's funny that, you know, right before this segment during the commercial break. Right, Very. Like, right. Right before this is a commercial for Clash of Champions coming up on Thursday, June 23. And then seconds later, they're giving away the result of the main event. Wow. Ric Flair is now the champion.
Speaker A:What.
Speaker B:What the going on here? And then there are some other things that get unintentionally up, too, because of playing this. So Gene also proceeds to show the matches that have been signed for batch at the Beach. So it says Austin's defending the US Title against Ricky Steamboat. So that spoiled the US Title match at the Clash. So obviously Austin's gonna retain against Johnny Be Bad. And then Tag Team Champions Cactus Jack and Kevin Sullivan versus Pretty wonderful. That also spoiled the tag team match at Clash because Cactus and Sullivan retained the titles against the Nasty Boys. So now, you know, the Nasty Boys don't win the titles at the Clash of Champions. So big time mistake there, you know, hopefully, like I said, you know, many people weren't watching the main event that night, and if they did, they got the scoop early and they had no reason to tune in for Clash of Champions other than to see it all play out. Yeah, like you said, I even wrote my notes. Good thing the Internet was in its infancy and wasn't being really used much like this. And I mean, that information would go spreading like crazy. I mean, I can only imagine, like, just like if I was in, if I had watched Main Event that night, you go to school the next day and you tell people, oh, they said this. Yeah, right. Yeah, Right. That didn't happen. You're trying to tell people that you heard the results and know the results.
Speaker C:Yeah, they were like, you idiot, you're lying.
Speaker B:Shut up. You're fibbing. So, yeah, that's WCW for you. They. They think they're smooth, like recording ahead of time and all that, you know, production wise. And then they just got your notes in order. You're right.
Speaker C:And cue cards and. Because, I mean, me. Gene's a professional, so.
Speaker B:Oh, yeah. So he just reads like he was.
Speaker C:Just doing it whenever it's on the prompt. Right?
Speaker B:Like, right.
Speaker C:It was like a teleprompter.
Speaker B:Right. He didn't know that they were gonna put it on a week before.
Speaker C:Brutal.
Speaker B:Wow. All right, so just one little result and then we're gonna get to that Clash of Champions. So Savannah, Georgia, at the Civic center, you have Sting defeat Steve Austin via DQ when Colonel Parker interfered as Austin was caught in a scorpion death lock. So even on the house shows Colonel Parker still at ringside and causing distractions for Austin. Alrighty, so now that brings us to the Clash of the Champions Class of Champions 27 in Charleston, South Carolina, from the North Charleston Coliseum, June 23, 1994. It is live, but, you know, they already knew the results because it's wrestling. But yeah, let's see how it all breaks down. We're gonna watch the U.S. championship match. Stunning Steve versus Johnny B. Bad. And it starts off at 4000, 225. If you're gonna be watching along, I'm pretty sure this is the same version that's available on the, whatever, the Peacock Network, wherever fucking WWE is gonna put their old shit. Maybe one day it won't be anywhere. We'll see. Alright, so let's get set up for that. This.
Speaker C:I'm there.
Speaker B:You're there already? All right.
Speaker C:I was just getting there. There's like a Dusty Rhodes Dustin Rhodes promo beforehand and now you got like, I don't know, a shitty drawing on the screen.
Speaker B:Was it 42? What?
Speaker C:42, 25.
Speaker B:42, 25. Oh, it's a Four Horsemen.
Speaker C:Oh, all right.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker C:Looks like a chicken head or something. You know what I mean?
Speaker B:Yeah, yeah.
Speaker C:People put like a plastic, like a latex glove on their head.
Speaker B:Yeah, that's funny. All right, all right, so I'll give a countdown three down to one, then say play. When I say play, we'll click play and get started with the Clash of Champions US Championship match. Stunning Steve vs Johnny be bad for the last time. Johnny Be Bad. I'm sure he Wrestles him again at some point, but this is the last title match. All right, I'm gonna lower the volume here before it blaze in my ear. All right, here we go. Three, two, one, play. All right, here comes Johnny. Oh, it's Arn Anderson poster. It's AA the Enforcer with the chicken glove head.
Speaker C:Chicken glove head. You don't want to make him mad.
Speaker B:I don't think I ever noticed that lyric. It's one of the first ones, too. He looks just like Little Richard. Wow. Custom made for Charleston. Let's not sit down, Charleston. Let's get down.
Speaker C:I want a rope.
Speaker B:What a waste of a rope to put all that on it. I mean, maybe it can be removed, but that's the Gustin Charleson robe. All right, so they're still talking. Blow me, Johnny. Do you see that sign?
Speaker C:Come on.
Speaker B:Said Blow me Johnny. I know it's supposed to be like referring to how he puts the kiss on people's cheeks. And that's a funny sign out of context. Blow me, Johnny. I don't know if it was a guy's sign. Oh, bad blaster. He's going to shoot it off. Dirt. Austin's entrance. Come on. Timing sucked. Oh, my God. What a crew of people.
Speaker C:All that blown in the air. I wouldn't be able to breathe.
Speaker B:What a different audience it is today as compared to back then for wrestling fans. Like, if you watch a wrestling show now and you see people in the audience, like, that's kids, that's wrestling fans. Fans. Yeah, you know, but why do you say that, though?
Speaker C:Because they wear merch.
Speaker B:Yeah, I guess. And you just know that they go to as many and. Yeah, I guess. I guess it's true. The same back then, but it just looks like these people look like more like regular people that are just like, oh, wrestling's in town. Okay, I'll go know.
Speaker C:I know you mean. Yeah, yeah, I know what you mean.
Speaker B:But now it's like hardcore wrestling fans, like, ah, we gotta go see this. And they're all yelling everything. They know the ins and outs of the business.
Speaker C:Wearing the popcorn and oh, big smack. Smack them.
Speaker B:Yeah, smack them. Treating them like a.
Speaker C:You. You lit your little man.
Speaker B:Austin had the bell on his hand the whole time, but he's, like, going to smack him. He should have just smacked him with a belt. All right, the bell is rung. Johnny's got his boxing mode going on here. Austin's trying to avoid it, but. And he does the kick to the gut. Oh, nice. We have Jesse Ventura on commentary at the clash.
Speaker C:Are we lucky? Aren't we lucky? Comes back and does the main events now.
Speaker B:That's right.
Speaker C:That was a great matchup.
Speaker B:The other thing that sucks with Hogan coming in is that means Jesse's gonna leave because Jesse doesn't want to be around Hogan.
Speaker C:Crazy.
Speaker B:He's not around long.
Speaker A:Oh, but he ran into the elbow. Right on the nose.
Speaker C:Whoa, I like that.
Speaker B:Johnny always makes a mess of the ring before it starts with that bad blaster. They get all this confetti in the ring.
Speaker C:It's a hazard. Get something really feel about that. Probably pissed.
Speaker B:Yeah. Get your stupid out of here. Austin's got the US Champ plates on, people.
Speaker C:Don't forget, I'm the man.
Speaker D:Getting pretty darn angry here. Showing a little bit of a temper. The full arm dragon twist now on the arm. And stunning.
Speaker B:Steve back down. Arm dragon twist. Austin pleading. Johnny's still wrenching it. The referee, I don't know what he's looking at. He's looking at the crowd. We notice the hot chick in the crowd? Doubt it, though, based on what I've seen sport in this sport. All right, Wrenching it. Wrenching it. All right, come on, let's do something.
Speaker C:Steve, Every match starts off like this.
Speaker B:Yep.
Speaker C:No matter what, we're gonna go to the mat first.
Speaker B:Oh, good slap. Oh, slap to the chest. Hit him in the face with that first one. Get him. Oh, drop kick.
Speaker C:Nice, crisp, crisp drop.
Speaker B:Click. Swinging the legs. I'm dry. Take them. You thought the action was gonna get hot. I'm drag.
Speaker C:Take them like you thought.
Speaker B:The wrong drop kick this time. Sending Austin out of the ring to the guardrail and flopping down. And some of that graffiti on his back.
Speaker A:Get him.
Speaker B:Graffiti? What am I talking about? Confetti. Hey, he said it, too.
Speaker C:Look who agrees with us.
Speaker B:Well, I just made the mistake and said graffiti, and I meant to say confetti. And then Jesse said graffiti, too.
Speaker C:Oh, I didn't even notice you said that.
Speaker B:Yeah, I was like, graffiti. What am I talking about? I mean, confetti. I felt like an idiot that Jesse Ventura said it, too. Like, okay, not that I'm not an idiot, but Jesse's an idiot, too, so I'm in good company.
Speaker D:Keeping an eye. We're still waiting to see who Central Sherry will pick as her man. So far, no one yet, but she could walk out during this match.
Speaker B:Hey. What?
Speaker A:For all you know, it might be me.
Speaker D:I know better than that.
Speaker B:What is the definition of grief? Graffiti, though. Does it probably just has to do with meaning? Trash.
Speaker C:Trash.
Speaker B:Yeah. Oh, yeah.
Speaker C:Because it, it wouldn't just be spray paint because if you use a marker, I don't know. Yeah, Obstructing view, I guess or like destroying property. They brought up the Hollywood and Vine.
Speaker B:Yeah, of course they did. Graffiti and Italian means like scribbling or scratch. All right, so there's nothing to do with confetti. All right, back to the arm again. More of that. Just trying to take up TV time. Yep. You guys have 15 minutes. Use it. They've had this match enough times. With that said, they have this match enough times. Hopefully they find a good ending this time. I know there's always some kind of stupid ending with these guys. The best ending between these guys. When Steve Austin beats Mark Mero, King of the ring. Oh yeah.
Speaker C:When they're in a real promotion.
Speaker B:Learn you don't always have to charge in like that.
Speaker D:Slowly gets himself up, methodically spins around his bad.
Speaker B:What's up?
Speaker C:Oh, say his pants are ripped, but it's like that little flap he has.
Speaker B:Over the bad flap. That was funny. Austin waving Johnny's hand. I'm with the US Champ. I love that.
Speaker C:Anytime watching anyone do that, like a rather wrestling or anything do that's the best. You just control them.
Speaker B:Yeah. Like a.
Speaker C:Make another human your puppet. It's always going to get a giggle.
Speaker B:Oh, take down, roll up for two. All right. The crowd's into it. I think I heard a little bit. Yeah. If you look at it though, it's like, I don't know.
Speaker C:Well, they're probably like, we've seen this so many times.
Speaker A:And again, Stunning.
Speaker B:Steve, handful of hair.
Speaker A:Bad kicking out on a two count. Stunning.
Speaker B:Steep breakup. Oh, he drives the knee down. After he broke him down, slamming the knee into Johnny's back. Automat wrestling.
Speaker C:I love seeing those like that's a move Austin keeps.
Speaker B:Yeah, it's true. It's interesting what we've seen over the, over the time. Covering all this is just the little bits that he ends up using with Stone Cold. Got to wear them down. That was one of the best shots.
Speaker C:To the midsection I've ever seen in wrestling.
Speaker B:Holy. You know, speaking of like seeing Austin progress and change over time, I watched an episode of Uswa recently from 1989. He had a totally different voice.
Speaker C:Really?
Speaker B:Yeah, it wasn't like rough and gruff like it usually is. It was like high pitched and like maybe he was trying to fake like a baby face type voice, but it was not like. Yeah, it didn't even sound like him at all. Not like, not like that. But like, it was just more like. Like, I know it was. It's like he intentionally changed his voice to be like a regular no accent type voice.
Speaker C:A bit more hype.
Speaker B:Yeah, it sucked. I was like, that's not him. It was DDT from Johnny B. Bad Austin.
Speaker C:He's not looking good right now.
Speaker B:Also, I. I bumped into an episode where Steve Williams becomes Steve Austin. He doesn't want to be called Steve Williams anymore. So it's like an actual part of the story that his name changed, and that's when he turned heel. Zoning became Steve Austin instead of just being Chris Adams. Trainee lackey.
Speaker C:Yeah.
Speaker B:Johnny be back. Going to the top. Oh, he's gonna go for a cross body probably. But Austin knocked him down.
Speaker C:You know what that is? Experience.
Speaker B:Yeah. At this point, Austin's five years of experience. A little bit more than Johnny. I think around the same.
Speaker C:Really?
Speaker B:I think so.
Speaker C:I thought he was relatively new.
Speaker B:Because.
Speaker C:Austin makes that comment about moment. Someone moving up fast than anyone he's seen.
Speaker B:That's true. Yeah.
Speaker C:Could have just been saying that.
Speaker B:Yeah. Okay. Yeah.
Speaker C:Hey, this match is getting good.
Speaker B:Oh, it is.
Speaker C:Ever since that shot to the midsection, this is really turned up.
Speaker B:So Marc Barrow started training in 90. So two years after Austin started training, also was training like an 88. Mero. 90. Mero made his wrestling debut in 91. All right, here he goes with the leg drop. Classic spot. Misses it as usual. Usually misses it, then does his bounce and flop. Clothesline. Johnny, Austin's down. One, two, two.
Speaker A:Again.
Speaker B:That's like Patrick didn't even look like him. No way.
Speaker C:That's Nick Patrick. I mean, it is grainy.
Speaker B:Yeah, it is grainy. Okay.
Speaker C:Yeah, yeah, you could sign.
Speaker B:It's super short here. Yeah, Little Got his little mustache. Oh, Austin putting on brass knuckles. Brass knuckles, which is just rolled up tape. Oh, okay.
Speaker C:Weak.
Speaker B:All right. Better than the last one, though. Weak.
Speaker C:That's. Yeah, that's weak, though.
Speaker B:All right, so he punched Johnny V. Bad out. Which goes well with the story because Johnny gave him that cheap shot last week. Oh, yeah.
Speaker C:You know what? You're right.
Speaker B:Knocked him out. So Austin's like, you, I'm gonna knock you out with my knuckles. Boom. And he regains the championship. But now Randy Anderson's in the ring ratting out Austin.
Speaker C:Oh, what a. Oh, snitches get stitches.
Speaker B:What the fuck's this? They didn't say. The match continued. So Johnny. Johnny just rolls up. Austin counts the. We got a three count.
Speaker C:That can't.
Speaker B:And Johnny's holding the U. S. Championship. That doesn't work.
Speaker C:Nah, someone's got to come. Where's the third ref to say, you can't. You can't do that.
Speaker B:Yeah, you can't do that either, right? No one ever said. The match continues. They just raised Austin hand. Austin's hand, and the foreign object fell out. Whereas WW like to call them the international objects. All right, so is he the champ? So it's unclear right now what's going on. Johnny's holding the belt, but the referees are discussing in the ring and they're going to commercial break. But they said they're gonna.
Speaker C:We're coming back to this, right?
Speaker B:All right, let's see. No, Hulk Hogan's coming out. Guess it's up in the air. What's going on with the championship? I would think that they'll just say, oh, it's a no contest and. Or. Or dq, right? If anything, it's dq. Austin retains a championship. Yeah, that's got to be what it is because the referee, Nick Patrick never said, oh, yeah.
Speaker A:Okay.
Speaker B:Match continues. Johnny B. Bad just took it for himself to roll up. To roll up Austin. And then the non referee, Randy Anderson slides down and makes a three count. Like, get the out of here. Well, he's been annoying lately. Randy Anderson.
Speaker C:We do know what happens.
Speaker B:We do. He keeps the championship because. Yeah, we obviously planned the rest of the episode. Well, with that said, that wraps up that. Let me just go through. I think I have Clash results. Yeah. All right. So, yep, we just run through the rest of the Clash results. You know, kind of like how Mean Gene did on Main Event three days before. Four days before the Clash. Pretty much told everybody what happened. So here we go. You have Cactus Jack, Kevin Sullivan retain the tag titles against the Nasty Boys in a dq. And you also had Evad Sullivan wearing his backwards Hulk rules gear. So I was starting that again as Hogan's coming in. He's jacked up and pumped. He had a guardian angel making his wrestling debut here against Tex Lazinger, which is Phineas Godwin. So Phineas got squashed here. Lord Steven Regal regained the TV title from Larry Zabisco. So Larry Zabisco had defeated Lord Steven Regal a week or two ago for the TV title in a, you know, surprise return and won the title. But Regal wins it right back here at the Clash. Okay, we got an interview with Mean Jean. Dustin Rhodes agrees to team up. Dustin Rhodes agrees to team up with Arn Anderson rather at Bash to the beach against Terry Funk and Bunkhouse Buck. And that's not gonna go out. Go. Well, you know, Arn's gonna turn on Dustin Rhodes at the Bash. Hulk Hogan comes out to his new song. As we just heard at the end of that watch along portion, Hogan comes out to his He's American Made song. He's American Made. At the time, I hated it. But it's okay.
Speaker C:I guess it's not bad now. But I didn't like it.
Speaker B:No.
Speaker C:Because I didn't like the guy in the beginning music.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker C:Is that the same guy from his original song?
Speaker B:No, I. I don't. I don't think so.
Speaker C:Hire him.
Speaker B:It sounds like the same guy that does all the WCW songs anyhow. Yeah, it's probably the same guy that was just singing Johnny Be Bad. He's American Made. All right. Rick Flay interrupts on the big screen and they bicker back and forth. So they're building up to their. Their match at Bash at the beach, which is inevitable. You know, this, you know, gives away the main event even more just as much as Mean Gene did by accident. So, yeah, we already know it's spoiled. Shaq does a recorded interview. Shaquille o' Neal of the Orlando Magic at this time, he does a recorded interview praising Hulk Hogan. So Hogan's bringing in his people or just trying to make his connection. So he brings in Shaq, George Foreman. All these people are starting to make appearance. Mr. T comes back. All this. Sherry comes out at the start of the flare Sting unification championship match. She's wearing Sting face paint. So that's making people think that she's gonna be on Sting's side. And she's acting like that throughout the match. And she does factor into the finish. Flair pushes Sherry into Sting. You know, it's one of those things where he's using her to like, you know, protect himself. So now Sting is concerned about Sherry because Sherry got knocked down. Flair rolls up Sting for the win while he's distracted and wins the championship match. After the match, Sherry reveals that she was with Flair the whole time. And they attack Sting. And then Hulk Hogan runs down to make the safest thing and the Clash of Champions. So now, you know, it's Ric Flair versus Hogan. And Hogan's down there and clears the ring. And, you know, he's already got the. He's got the spotlight at the end of the Clash of Champions, as we expected. All right, so from there now we go to the following week, the following weekend. It's WCW Worldwide and jv, what do you got for us?
Speaker C:All right, so W, W WCW Worldwide June 25, 1994. We're in Orlando, Florida. This was taped way back on May 13th and we're going to kick it off here. We're going to find out exactly kind of, you know, who's the champion. We're going to be able to identify that right away as we kick off this match between Steve Austin and Kenny Kendall. So the trio of Austin, Parker and Manga enter the ring. Austin is all smiles because he's still the US Champion and his opponent, Kenny Kendall is already in the ring. Tony points out that Austin can be this confident because he's been champion for so long and also because he has Mangan Parker in his corner as backup. If he gets in trouble, he's protected. Jesse then corrects Tony, telling him that he doesn't recall Colonel Parker jumping in the ring and he's yet to see Meng do anything violent. Tony is just making assumptions that aren't true. Jesse also points out that Meng wasn't hired to jump in the ring, which he's right. But to protect Parker outside the rink.
Speaker B:Right.
Speaker C:Meng was protect. Was hired to protect Colonel Parker.
Speaker B:Right. Yep.
Speaker C:Austin doesn't need it, which was smart because it would have made Austin look weak if he needed like someone else.
Speaker B:Right.
Speaker C:Which I guess it still kind of does because he's always there. But he's never really like got involved involved.
Speaker B:No, not yet.
Speaker C:Jesse says Austin doesn't need help and Tony agrees. Meanwhile, in the ring, Kenny. Kenny Kendall gets a roll up on Austin, but Austin kicks out. Austin then calls the ref over and tells him, you know, come here. He's like, this young man just got me by the trunk. So the ref gives Kendall a warning. Kendall reverses a backdrop attempt, but Austin reverses it into a roll up attempt off the ropes. Austin then complains again that Kendall is using the ropes in the crowd booze. Austin then rolls up Kendall for the Hollywood and Vine out of nowhere, as Jesse says, and Austin gets the win. I like how we said the out of nowhere because we get a lot of out of nowhere moments from or not out of nowhere, but like unexpected moments from Austin.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker C:Out of nowhere ends up being Randy Orton thing, but like, you know, the Rattlesnake.
Speaker B:Right.
Speaker C:Persona and kind of he can strike at any time.
Speaker B:Yep.
Speaker C:It's like, you know, anytime we could catch something like this, you know, before he was actually stone cold and we can kind of catch like character traits.
Speaker B:Yeah. Like him saying bottom line or something. Yeah, yeah.
Speaker C:It's always cool to see. So not much of a match there. Naturally. It was a schmuck against Stunning Steve Austin.
Speaker B:Yeah, it's pretty much what we get. That and Johnny B. Mad matches.
Speaker C:Yeah. But this might have been one of the worst ones.
Speaker B:So at least it was quick. Yeah.
Speaker C:Wrestling. It was a six minute. The whole thing was six. The match was probably like three minutes. But there wasn't a lot of wrestling because there was a lot of Austin fucking around. Fucking around. Which I kind of take it as like maybe he was just tired from defending the title.
Speaker B:Yeah, he could go with that. Yeah.
Speaker C:Even though it was like a month ago.
Speaker B:All right, so we're just about to wrap up here, but here's a couple more side notes for the Saturday night. That was that weekend as well. June 25th. Okay, so it is official, obviously. Hulk Hogan versus Ric Flair at the Bash. They had the match signing at the CNN center with Ted Turner there. So there was just one line that, that I loved. It was Flair. Flair had a line for Jimmy Hart because Jimmy Hart's there with Hogan and Jimmy Hart starts yapping and Flair's pissed off. So Flair gets up and he, he yells at Jimmy Hart, says, sit down clown, before you get slapped down. Say it again. Sit down, clown. Yeah, sit down clown, before you get slapped down. I like that. It's a great line.
Speaker C:That's a wicked line. That's a clown before he gets slapped down.
Speaker B:Yeah. Then they also mentioned that Stunning Steve will defend the U.S. championship against rookie the Dragon Steve at Bash at the Beach. So this just makes it clear that Johnny B. Bad did not win the US Title at Clash of the Champions. It was a DQ and Austin still the champ. So now he has a new opponent. He's taken on Ricky Steamboat, who he's had many matches with before. Oh yeah, you know, a lot of TV title matches between them in the past. So they'll have the match at the Bash and that's what we'll get to next time. One other thing, there was a Columbia, South Carolina show on that Saturday as well, and it was Sting and Steve Austin going to a DQ again with interference from Colonel Parker. And that'll wrap things up for this episode covering June of 1994. Johnny be bad. And I guess, you know, that's. That's over with now. We spent a couple months, month, two and one, two and a half months maybe with, with all that going on. But as we've said, you know, things are progressively getting worse for Austin's spot in the company. He is the U. S. Champion, unfortunately. Yeah, he has that, but not much else. He is Getting a new opponent. We'll see what happens there, but, you know, we'll see it's. It's now become the summer of Hogan at this point. So we'll see how Bash of the beach goes and what else they have in store for Austin in July on our next episode. All right, so let me just give us some podcast plugs. I'll actually take a listen to Talking Taker and we'll be right back. And I'll shout out all the other podcasts right after that.

They have new episodes every month, so check out their latest episode for September. And that was with us, the Bottom Line wrestling cast. We joined them for a special episode covering uswa. As I was mentioning before, you know, Austin's in USWA as Steve Williams, and we watched a match that Steve Williams had against the Punisher who had become the Undertaker. So their first one on one match against each other was from November 4, 1989. That was a fun episode to do there. You can listen to that wherever you get your podcast, Talking Taker, but also go to their YouTube channel and you can watch us during that one. We. There's a video version of it and the video of the. Of the show, of the USWA show was played and you can watch it and watch the four of us talk about it. Yeah, that was a good one. Yeah, a lot of people listen to that one too. Is over like over 700 views on it already, so.
Speaker C:Wow.
Speaker B:Like, holy. All right. You know, I mean, they get decent views, but you know, that's one of the. One of the big ones, like right out the gate. So I don't know. I don't know if like some kind of algorithm got fucked up and like a bunch of bots are listening to it or actually, you know, a lot of people are listening to it. But hey, if you haven't go over, check it out. We do.
Speaker C:We bring a crowd, we show up for something.
Speaker B:Yeah, I'll go with that. All right. Also check out Book in the Territory, the Unprofessional wrestling podcast. And their latest episodes are covering WCW in January. They just did the January Clash on their Patreon. But then also on their free feed they covering WCW Saturday Night. So go ahead, check out Booking a Territory. They are just months behind us at this point and they're going through the. In regards to Austin, they're going through the chicken suit saga right now. So that's been fun to see. Another perspective. They're really enjoying it where we. We were kind of on it for the most part, but they think it's funny and they're enjoying it over there because Colonel Parker is really good. Yeah, he was funny. All right. Also check out our vantage point, the Retro Wrestling podcast. And they're covering 1988 WWF superstars. And those episodes are available wherever you get podcasts. But also they do a video version that's on YouTube as well, where you can watch the episode of Superstars as they're talking about it and talking about other things, which is what people usually do with watch alongs is, you know, we get away from the actual thing and talk about something else. Sometimes it's what you got to talk about is better than the wrestling. So anyway, check them out. It's our vantage point Retro Wrestling podcast and they are covering 2-6-1988 on their recent episode. Also check out JV and I and Rick Bibi on the Extreme ESW Live Cast. Okay, we're available at the Book in the territory patreon five dollar tier. And we're covering ECW hardcore TV episodes from 1993 all the way up to where we are in 1997. Our latest episode is covering ECW hardcore episodes 234 to 236, which is October 18th, 25th and November 1st of 1997. Check that out. And new episode will be available soon. They're covering the 8th and 15th November 1997, so check that out. And also check out the free feed. We have free episodes available that cover 93 through 97. They're about a year behind so you can get those for free wherever you get podcasts. And the latest one available there is 4-8-1997. Just building up to the first ECW pay per view. Barely legal. That was hardcore TV episode 207. All right, so that wraps things up for us this time. We'll be back next time. Covering July of 1994 and the bash of the beach, we'll be checking out the rookie Steamboat match against Austin for the u. S Championship, which we have watched in the past back on the early bottom line wrestling cast episodes. We did a watch along for that but now we'll be doing this one more in context. I think we're gonna watch a tag team match with. With Austin teaming up with Ric Flair to take on Ricky Steamboat and somebody else. Not Hulk Hogan, but not Hogan. I don't think it's Hogan. I think it's somebody else. But yeah, it was a. Oh, maybe it's Sting. Stinging. Stinging Steamboat.
Speaker C:Well, that makes more sense.
Speaker B:Yeah, so that'll be a good one. So thanks guys for joining us. Jv, any final words? Alrighty guys, take care. We'll see you next time. So long.
Speaker A:And that's the bottom line as far as I'm concerned. This over with. So get the hell out of here.
Speaker B:Sa.
